Men's black crocodile loafers in genuine hide, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. On an exotic, where the skin was cut from matters as much as whether it is real, and almost nobody selling crocodile tells you which part you are getting.

The three cuts, and what they cost

A crocodile hide is not uniform. Different areas have different scale sizes, different flexibility and very different value, and a listing that says only "genuine crocodile" is leaving out the part that decides the price.

Cut Pattern Where it sits
Belly Large rectangular tiles grading to smaller squares, no bone The most valuable and the softest. What a dress shoe should use
Flank Smaller rounded scales, irregular Middle grade. Often paneled in beside belly
Hornback Raised bony ridges down the spine Dramatic but stiff. Belongs on boots and bags, not dress shoes

These are cut from belly. The reason matters beyond price: belly scales have no osteoderm, the bony deposit that makes hornback rigid, so belly hide flexes at the ball of the foot instead of fighting it. A hornback loafer looks spectacular and never breaks in.

Three ways to check crocodile is real

Embossed cowhide printed with a croc pattern photographs almost identically and costs a fraction. These checks take under a minute in hand.

Find the pore. Every genuine crocodilian scale carries a small sensory pit, usually near one edge of the tile. It is where the animal sensed pressure changes in water. No embossing plate reproduces it, because it is a hole rather than a shape.

Check the tile edges. On a real hide the scales are separate plates of keratin with genuine depth between them, so a fingernail dragged across catches at each edge. Embossed leather is one continuous pressed surface and your nail glides over it.

Look for repetition. An embossing plate repeats on a fixed interval, so the same cluster of tiles shows up again further along the panel. A real hide grades continuously from larger tiles at the center of the belly to smaller ones toward the flanks, and never repeats.

One labeling note worth knowing: "genuine leather, croc print" is embossed cowhide. "Genuine crocodile leather" is a claim about the animal. The word order is not an accident.

Why black is the hard color on an exotic

Crocodile is read entirely by relief. What you see is not a pattern printed on a surface, it is hundreds of small raised plates with channels between them, and the eye reads the channels as shadow.

Black absorbs almost all the light that hits it, which means a badly finished black croc loses its own pattern. The tiles and the channels both go to the same dark and the shoe reads as a vaguely textured black slipper.

Getting it right depends on the finish rather than the dye. The tile faces need enough surface sheen to catch light while the channels stay matte, so the contrast comes from finish rather than from color. Done properly a black crocodile shoe shows its pattern clearly at conversational distance and reads as a plain dark shoe from across a room, which is exactly the behavior you want from an exotic in black.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly without disturbing the hide above it. On an exotic that is most of the value proposition, since the hide will comfortably outlast four or five soles.

Genuine crocodile belly upper, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. CITES documentation available on request, since crocodilian skins are traded under permit. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. More exotics in the exotic series.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

A loafer has to be snugger than a laced shoe because nothing holds your foot except the throat line and the heel counter. If it feels comfortable the first time you put it on it is too big, and heel slip on a slip on cannot be corrected afterwards.

There is a second consideration on an exotic. Crocodile does not stretch the way calf does. The tiles themselves have almost no give and only the channels between them flex, so the shoe will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want now rather than one you plan to break into. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you are between widths or have a high instep.

What to wear them with

One rule governs an exotic: the shoe is the exotic, so nothing else in the outfit should be. No exotic watch strap, no second textured leather, no pattern competing with the tiles.

Black croc is the dressiest exotic there is and it will carry charcoal and navy tailoring, black tailoring, and a dinner jacket in a setting where a patent pump would be too formal. It is wasted on chinos and denim, where the hide reads as expensive rather than as considered.

Match your belt to plain black smooth calf rather than chasing a matching croc belt. Two exotic pieces bought separately will be different hides and will nearly match, which looks worse than not matching at all. Also in the range: the black crocodile chukka boots and the suede and crocodile Belgian loafer.

Care, and the mistake that ruins a croc shoe

No wax polish, ever. This is the single most common way a crocodile shoe is destroyed.

Wax fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale in a lighter tone, and on black the effect is unmissable. Clearing wax out of a channel without damaging the tile edge is close to impossible.

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Use a conditioner made for exotic leathers two or three times a year, applied thinly and buffed off, which keeps the hide from drying and the tile edges from lifting. No brushing, because a stiff brush catches the tile edges and lifts them.

Keep them out of direct heat and sunlight, use cedar trees between wearings, and let them rest a day between wears.

What to expect when you order

Cut after you order from a selected skin. Every crocodile hide is patterned differently, so the tile layout on your pair will be close to the photographs rather than a copy of them. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What part of the crocodile are these cut from?
Belly. Belly scales are large rectangular tiles grading to smaller squares and carry no osteoderm, the bony deposit that makes hornback rigid, so belly hide flexes at the ball of the foot instead of fighting it.

What is the difference between belly, flank and hornback crocodile?
Belly is the most valuable and the softest, with large rectangular tiles, and it is what a dress shoe should use. Flank has smaller irregular rounded scales and is middle grade. Hornback has the raised bony ridges down the spine, which look dramatic but are stiff and belong on boots and bags.

How can I tell genuine crocodile from embossed leather?
Three checks. Find the small sensory pit near the edge of each tile, which no embossing plate reproduces because it is a hole rather than a shape. Drag a fingernail across the tiles, which catches on a real hide and glides on embossed leather. And look for repetition, since a plate repeats on a fixed interval and an animal never does.

What does "genuine leather, croc print" mean?
Embossed cowhide. "Genuine crocodile leather" is a claim about the animal. The word order is used deliberately and it is worth reading carefully.

Do these come with CITES documentation?
Yes, on request. Crocodilian skins are traded under permit, so documentation should exist for any genuine croc product and a seller who cannot produce it is worth a second question.

Why is black hard to do well on crocodile?
Because crocodile is read entirely by relief, with the channels between the tiles reading as shadow. Black absorbs almost all light, so a badly finished black croc loses its own pattern and reads as a vaguely textured black slipper. The tile faces need enough sheen to catch light while the channels stay matte.

Does crocodile stretch?
Barely. The tiles themselves have almost no give and only the channels between them flex, so the shoe will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want now rather than one you plan to break into.

Can I polish crocodile with wax?
No, and this is the most common way a croc shoe is destroyed. Wax fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale in a lighter tone. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and use a conditioner made for exotic leathers two or three times a year.

Should I buy a matching crocodile belt?
Not separately. Two exotic pieces bought at different times will be different hides and will nearly match, which looks worse than not matching at all. Use a plain black smooth calf belt instead.
