A black wingtip oxford in full grain calf, hand welted, made to order in US sizes and widths D through EEE. If you have been wearing a D because that is what shops carry, this page is mostly about that.

Why this page leads with width

We will be straight with you. A black wingtip oxford is the most ordinary shoe we make. Everyone makes one. In black there is no patina to look at, no exotic skin, no colour to argue about — the finish choices that distinguish our other shoes are invisible on a black upper, because black absorbs the light that would show them.

What is left is shape, construction, and fit. Two of those you can assess in a photograph. The third is the one almost nobody offers and the one that actually determines whether you will wear these.

Most men buying a black wingtip need it for work, a wedding, or a funeral — occasions where you will be standing for hours and cannot take the shoe off. That is the worst possible context in which to be half a width too narrow.

How to tell you are in the wrong width

Nearly every man in an EE or EEE foot has spent years in a D, because D is what shops stock and length is the only measurement anyone checks. Four signs, all of which you can look for on the shoes you own today.

  • The vamp bags. Loose wrinkles across the top of the shoe, not a single clean flex crease. That is leather being pushed sideways because it cannot go outward.
  • Your foot overhangs the sole. Look down at the widest part while standing. If flesh sits above and beyond the welt line, the last is too narrow — a longer size will not fix it.
  • The facings pull together. On a properly fitted oxford there is a finger's width between the lacing panels. If they meet or overlap, you have sized up in length to buy width.
  • You get relief taking them off, not comfort putting them on. The clearest tell there is.

Going up half a length to get width across the ball is the standard compensation, and it moves the flex point of the shoe forward of your actual flex point. That is what creates the crease across the toe box within a season, and it is why the shoe never breaks in properly — it is bending in the wrong place.

What the widths mean

Width Who it is for
D The standard fitting. What almost every shop stocks, and correct for a lot of people.
E Slightly wider across the ball. Often the right answer for someone who finds D "nearly right."
EE Genuinely wide. Rarely available above the mass market.
EEE Wide, and usually accompanied by a high instep. Almost never available in a welted dress shoe.

Width is measured as girth around the ball of the foot, not as flat breadth, so a high instep affects which fitting you need even if your foot is not especially broad. If you are unsure, send us your measurements and we will tell you — including if the answer is that a D is fine and you should buy something cheaper.

On a black shoe, construction is all you can see

Black hides finishing, so it also hides shortcuts. That cuts both ways, and it is worth knowing what to look at.

Look at the welt line from directly above. A hand welted shoe has a narrow, close welt because the stitch is sewn to a holdfast cut into the insole rather than to a canvas rib cemented on. A wide, uniform welt with a perfectly even edge usually means machine work and a glued rib underneath.

Look at the waist — the part of the sole under your arch. On a hand welted shoe the waist can be cut back close to the upper because there is no rib in the way. That narrowing is visible in a sole photograph and impossible on a Goodyear shoe.

Then look at the wing itself. The apex should be crisp and symmetrical, and the wings should reach the same distance back on both shoes. That is the fastest tell on a rushed wingtip and it shows in any straight-on photograph, in any colour.

What goes wrong with black calf specifically

Two things, both peculiar to black.

Creasing shows worse than on any other colour. Brown and navy have tonal variation that breaks up light across the vamp. Black has none, so every flex crease reads as a hard line. This is not a defect and it cannot be prevented — but it is made much worse by a bad width, because a shoe that flexes in the wrong place creases in the wrong place, permanently.

Perforations go grey. Black cream collects in the punched holes and dries lighter than the surrounding leather, so the medallion turns pale and dusty against the toe. On brown this reads as patina. On black it reads as neglect, and it is the single most common reason a black brogue looks tired. Clear the holes with a dry horsehair brush before the cream sets, not after.

This may not be the shoe you need

If this is your first proper black shoe, buy a plain cap toe instead. A black wingtip is a decorated shoe, and the perforation puts a ceiling on it — it is not right for black tie, not right for a funeral, and marginal in a conservative legal or financial office. A plain toe or wholecut covers all three, and it is the shoe you will regret not owning.

Buy the black wingtip second, when the formal ground is already covered and you want something with a shape people notice. If you want the wing without the country signal, ask us about a blind brogue — same shape, no perforation, meaningfully dressier.

And if a D fits you properly, we are genuinely not the cheapest way to buy this shoe. Our argument is welted construction and a fitting you cannot get elsewhere. If neither applies to you, buy from stock and spend the difference on something you cannot get anywhere.

Construction and ordering

Hand welted: the welt is sewn to a holdfast cut into a solid leather insole, with nothing cemented. Resoling happens below the welt without touching the upper, repeatedly. The insole is one piece of leather, so it moulds to your foot over the first weeks and holds that shape.

Made to order, which means the shoe is cut and lasted after you order rather than pulled from a shelf. {{VERIFY: state the lead time in weeks — competitors on this search display 30, 45 and 90-day returns and same-day stock, so silence on timing is conspicuous.}} Details on the made to order page; terms on shipping and returns, worth reading before you order a made-to-order shoe.

More of this shape in other leathers in the wingtip collection, the perforation across other toe patterns in the brogues, and the rest of the lace-ups in oxfords.

Frequently asked questions

Do you make wide width dress shoes?
Yes — D, E, EE and EEE, on every shoe, at no extra cost. Because these are made to order, width is a specification rather than a stock item.

How do I know what width I am?
Measure the girth around the widest part of your foot while standing, not the flat breadth. Send us the number with your usual length and we will tell you which fitting to order.

I usually buy half a size up for width. Should I do that here?
No. Buy your actual length and the correct width. Sizing up in length moves the flex point of the shoe ahead of your foot's flex point, which is what causes the crease across the toe and stops the shoe ever settling properly.

Can you wear black wingtips with a suit?
In most offices, yes. In a strictly conservative one, or for black tie or a funeral, take a plain cap toe.

Why do black shoes crease so visibly?
Black has no tonal variation to break up light, so every fold reads as a line. A correct width reduces it considerably; nothing eliminates it.

What is a blind brogue?
A wingtip with no perforation — the wing shape without the holes. Dressier than this shoe, and available on request.

Can they be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Hand welting means the sole comes off below the welt without disturbing the upper.
