Men's brown patina wingtip oxford shoes in full grain calf with the color built by hand in layers, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. A full brogue is the hardest shape to patina well, because the perforations fight the gradation.

Why a brogue is the difficult canvas

Most patina work is shown on wholecuts and plain oxfords for a reason. Those shoes have a large unbroken panel, so the artist can run a gradation from deep at the toe to light at the throat and the eye reads it as one movement.

A full brogue has no unbroken panel anywhere. The wing cap cuts across the vamp in a W, the perforations punch the surface into hundreds of small points, and the medallion covers the toe, which on any other shoe is where the patina is deepest and does the most work.

So the artist has a choice. Either grade the color and let the perforations interrupt it, which produces a shoe that looks patchy, or build the color to follow the shoe's own geometry instead: deeper along the wing edge and the cap seams where a shoe naturally darkens with age, lighter in the fields between them. Done properly the patina looks like the shoe has been polished for twenty years, which is precisely the effect a brogue patina should aim for and a wholecut patina should not.

Applied patina and earned patina

The word describes two different things and the confusion is worth clearing up.

Earned patina is what happens to good leather over years: the toe and heel darken from polishing, the flex creases hold shadow, the color deepens unevenly according to how you walk. Nobody applies it.

Applied patina is hand layered dye built on crust leather, which is hide that has been tanned but not dyed, before the shoe is finished. A skilled artist builds it to imitate what twenty years of wear would have done.

The two are compatible. An applied patina on full grain calf keeps developing after you buy it, so the shoe you own at five years is not the shoe in the photographs. That is the intended behavior rather than a fault.

Hand painted or sprayed, the check

Look for a boundary. Hand layered pigment has no edge you can point to, because each coat is thin and the transition is continuous. Sprayed shading stops, usually as a soft oval on the toe.

On a brogue there is a better place to look: inside the perforations. Hand applied color reaches into and around each punched hole, so the rim of the perforation carries the tone of the leather around it. A spray sits on the surface and skips the inside of the holes, so the rims stay pale and the medallion looks like it was stencilled on.

On a worn pair, hand work deepens at the flex crease because the pigment is in the grain and gets burnished by movement. A sprayed film cracks and lightens at that same crease because it is a coating rather than color in the leather.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe can be resoled repeatedly without disturbing the painted leather above it. On a hand colored shoe that is the whole point, because the patina is most of the cost and it survives every resole.

Full grain calf upper, full brogue perforation with a gimped wing edge and toe medallion, closed oxford lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. More of the same technique in the hand painted patina collection.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

Because this is an oxford, instep height matters. When the shoe is laced the facings should sit close but not touching. Wide apart means it is too small across the instep and wear will not fix it; touching means it is too big.

Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball, which only makes the shoe long. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you have a high instep or are between widths.

What to wear them with

A brown patina full brogue is a smart casual shoe that reaches into relaxed business, and the hand colored depth lets it carry cloth with texture that a flat brown could not.

Gray flannel is the strongest pairing. Navy works, in hopsack or flannel rather than smooth worsted. Tweed and heavier odd jackets work and this is where a brogue belongs historically. Stone, olive and tan chinos work, and dark denim works.

What it does not want is a formal charcoal business suit, where a full brogue is a step too casual whatever the color. Match your belt to the deepest tone in the patina rather than to the lightest. Also in the range: the mahogany wingtip oxford and the camel suede wingtip oxford.

Care, and the rule that matters

Neutral cream only. Pigmented polish over hand layered color flattens every gradation permanently, and on a patina there is no recovering it once it has gone flat.

On a brogue there is a second problem: cream collects inside the perforations, dries pale, and outlines every hole in a lighter tone, which turns the medallion into a set of white dots. Use cream sparingly, then brush thoroughly with a horsehair brush to clear the holes before the cream sets. Brush along the wing seam rather than across it.

Keep the shoes out of direct sunlight, since UV fades any patina. Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, dry naturally away from heat.

What to expect when you order

Every pair is colored by hand after you order, so no two are the same. Yours will be close to the photographs rather than a copy of them, because crust leather takes pigment differently hide to hide. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is a patina on a shoe?
Hand layered dye built on crust leather, which is hide that has been tanned but not dyed, applied before the shoe is finished. A skilled artist builds it to imitate what twenty years of polishing and wear would have done.

What is the difference between applied and earned patina?
Earned patina is what happens to good leather over years: the toe and heel darken from polishing and the flex creases hold shadow. Applied patina is built deliberately with dye before the shoe is finished. The two are compatible, so an applied patina on full grain calf keeps developing after you buy it.

Why is a brogue harder to patina than a plain oxford?
Because it has no unbroken panel. The wing cap cuts across the vamp, the perforations punch the surface into hundreds of points, and the medallion covers the toe, which is where a patina is usually deepest. The color has to follow the shoe's own geometry rather than run as a simple gradation.

How can I tell hand painted patina from sprayed color?
On a brogue, look inside the perforations. Hand applied color reaches into and around each punched hole so the rims carry the tone of the leather around them. A spray sits on the surface and skips the holes, leaving pale rims and a medallion that looks stencilled on.

Will the color keep changing after I buy them?
Yes, and that is intended. An applied patina on full grain calf continues to develop with polishing and wear, so the shoe you own at five years is not the shoe in the photographs.

How should an oxford fit across the instep?
When laced, the facings should sit close but not touching. Wide apart means the shoe is too small across the instep and wear will not fix it. Touching means it is too big.

Can I use normal shoe polish on a patina?
No. Neutral cream only. Pigmented polish over hand layered color flattens every gradation permanently and there is no recovering it.

How do I stop cream collecting in the perforations?
Use it sparingly and brush thoroughly with a horsehair brush before the cream sets. Left to dry in the holes it goes pale and outlines every perforation in a lighter tone, which turns the medallion into a set of white dots.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. Every pair is colored by hand after you order and crust leather takes pigment differently hide to hide.
