Genuine crocodile chukka boots, hand welted, made to order in your US size and width. Two of the boots you will see alongside this one in search results are crocodile print on calf at a fraction of the price. The first section is how to tell the difference in a photograph, because that is the only skill that matters when buying exotic footwear online.

What crocodile leather actually is

Crocodile leather is the belly hide of a farmed crocodile, tanned so the natural scale pattern survives as raised tiles across the surface. The tiles are small and squared near the centre of the belly and grow rounder toward the flanks. That gradation is the animal, not a design decision.

Each tile carries a small pit near its edge — an integumentary sense organ, a pressure receptor the animal used to detect movement in water. On a finished boot it reads as a dark dot inside the tile. Alligator does not have them on the body. If you are unsure which of the two you are holding, that dot is the answer.

Crocodile, alligator, caiman, print

Tile Feel Tell
Crocodile Squared centre tiles, rounding at the flank Supple, folds without resistance A small pit in each tile
Alligator Larger, more uniform, softer edges Supple No pits on the belly
Caiman Similar at a glance Stiff, resists folding Bony deposits inside the tiles
Print or embossed Uniform, repeating Feels like leather with a texture on it The pattern cycles

The repeat test. A real hide never repeats. Print and embossing come off a plate, so the pattern cycles — find the same tile arrangement twice on one boot and it was pressed in. This works on any product photograph, and it is the check to run before you consider anything else.

Caiman is the one to know about, because it is routinely sold as crocodile and it makes a materially worse boot. Caiman belly tiles contain osteoderms — bone within the scale itself — which makes the hide rigid. Rigid hide on a boot that flexes every step cracks at the fold, often within a couple of years. Press the toe with a thumb: crocodile and alligator give, caiman resists.

Why a chukka rather than a dress shoe

A chukka is an ankle boot with two or three pairs of eyelets, open lacing, and a plain rounded toe. Nothing on it — no cap, no perforation, no buckle, no zip.

That absence is the reason this shape suits crocodile better than almost anything else. Crocodile is a busy surface with strong tile definition, and every seam you add carves it into sections. A brogue fights it — punching clean holes through raised tiles of varying thickness is difficult and the result reads as clutter. A wingtip carves the panel into a shape. A chukka gives you one unbroken run of hide from the toe over the instep, so the skin is the only thing happening on the boot.

There is a second reason, which is about the tile gradation. Because the tiles change size across the hide, a large uninterrupted panel shows that progression — small and squared at the toe, rounding out toward the sides. Cut that panel into pieces and you lose the one visual proof that the hide is real.

See the rest of the boots in boots, and the other skins in exotic.

The failure mode: tile edges, not tiles

Crocodile does not fail in the middle of a tile. It fails at the edges, and on a boot this matters more than on a shoe.

Every tile stands slightly proud of the skin between them, so the tile edge is the highest point on the surface and takes contact first — the other boot, a kerb, a trouser hem, a chair leg. On a dyed hide the pigment goes there before anywhere else, and the boot develops a pale outline around each tile.

Then there is lift. The interstitial skin between tiles is thinner than the tiles themselves, so it takes the fold at the flex crease. A boot flexes harder than a shoe and across a longer line, because the shaft holds the upper while the vamp bends. If that thin skin dries out, a tile edge on the toe box begins to curl away at the corner — and once a tile edge lifts it does not lie back down.

Both are prevented by the same thing, and it is not polish. Exotic leather conditioner, applied sparingly and often, worked into the channels between tiles rather than across the crowns. Shoe cream sits on top of a textured hide, fills the channels, dries pale, and makes the boot look chalky while doing nothing for the skin underneath.

One more thing specific to a chukka: the flex crease on an ankle boot sits right where the vamp meets the lacing, so that is where you condition first and most often. It is the highest-stress line on the boot and the least visible when you are cleaning it.

Why hand welting matters on a crocodile boot

Crocodile is expensive, and the point of paying for it is that the boot outlives several soles.

A Blake-stitched boot runs the sole stitch straight through the insole and the upper. On this hide that means putting a needle through crocodile, and every resole either reuses those holes or makes new ones in a skin that costs more than the sole ever will. A Goodyear welt is better, but the welt attaches to a canvas rib cemented to the insole — a glued component that can fail while the crocodile above it is still perfectly good. A cemented boot cannot be resoled at all.

Hand welting cuts a holdfast directly into a solid leather insole and sews the welt to that. Nothing is glued, and the resole happens entirely below the upper. The crocodile is never touched.

On a chukka this argument is stronger than on a dress shoe, for a simple reason: a chukka gets worn. It is not an evening piece kept for six outings a year. If you buy crocodile in a shape you will actually use, the boot needs to survive resoling repeatedly, and most exotic footwear is built on constructions that cannot.

Where these belong, and what they are not for

Dark denim is the natural pairing and what most people will use them for. Charcoal and mid-grey flannel work. Navy works. Olive works well.

Keep the trouser plain — a check or a heavy stripe beside crocodile is two patterns arguing. Slight break so the shaft is not fully exposed standing. Match the belt to the deepest tone in the hide rather than the surface colour, and do not wear a crocodile belt with crocodile boots. One exotic per outfit.

These are not formal. Open lacing and a plain rounded toe cap the formality regardless of the material, so not for black tie, a funeral, or a conservative office — for those, a black plain toe or wholecut in calf.

Not a weather boot either. A welted leather sole handles a wet pavement, not standing water, and water draws oils out of the skin between tiles — which is precisely what makes tile edges lift. If they get wet, dry them away from heat and condition them afterwards.

And if this is your first pair of boots, buy a calf chukka first. It goes with everything and you will wear it fifty times a year. This is the second or third pair.

Sizing: made to order in your US width

Made to order in US sizes, widths D through EEE. Nothing about the fitting changes because the upper is crocodile, but the consequence of getting it wrong does.

Exotic hide has less give than calf. A calf boot half a width too narrow will stretch and eventually accommodate you. This one will not — it will load the tile edges across the ball of the foot every step until they crack. Order the width you actually are, not the width shops have taught you to accept.

Open lacing does help across the instep, which makes this a good boot for a thick or high-arched foot. It does nothing for width across the ball.

Measure against the size guide before ordering. If you are between widths, have a high instep, or have never been fitted above a D, tell us before you order — on a made-to-order exotic that conversation is free beforehand and impossible afterwards.

What to expect when you order

Cut and lasted for you after the order. {{VERIFY: state the lead time in weeks. This SERP shows a "Get it by Sat" chip and a "Nearby" chip, so buyers arriving here may expect immediate availability.}}

Two things specific to exotic skin. We will ask for your delivery state before confirming, because several US states regulate the sale of certain reptile products and the position is not identical everywhere — a real step, not a formality. And no two hides are the same, so tile size and the exact depth of colour will vary from the photographs. That is what buying a skin rather than a print means.

Details on made to order, terms on shipping and returns — read those before ordering a made-to-order exotic. {{VERIFY: confirm what species documentation ships with the order.}}

Frequently asked questions

Is this real crocodile or crocodile print?
Real. The fastest way to satisfy yourself is the repeat test — a printed or embossed hide cycles its pattern and a real one never does. Some crocodile boots sold online, including ones you will have seen at around a hundred dollars, are print on calf.

What is the difference between crocodile and alligator?
Crocodile belly tiles carry a small sensory pit; alligator tiles do not. Alligator tiles are generally larger and more uniform. Both are supple and both are far better than caiman.

How do I know it is not caiman?
Press the toe. Caiman has bone inside the belly scales and resists. Crocodile gives.

Are crocodile boots durable enough to wear regularly?
Yes, provided the hide is conditioned. Crocodile is supple and hard-wearing, and the failure point is tile edges drying out rather than the skin wearing through. A boot that is conditioned every couple of months will outlast several soles.

Can crocodile boots be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly, because these are hand welted — the sole comes off below the welt without a needle going near the upper. Blake-stitched exotic boots put the sole stitch through the hide, and cemented ones cannot be resoled at all.

How do I care for crocodile?
Exotic leather conditioner worked into the channels between tiles, roughly every couple of months and after any wetting. Not shoe cream, and never a coloured polish — it collects in the channels and dulls the surface. Cedar trees between wears.

Can I wear them in the rain?
Avoid it. Water will not destroy crocodile, but it draws oils out of the thin skin between tiles, and that drying out is what makes tile edges lift.

What is the difference between a chukka and a desert boot?
A desert boot is a specific Clarks design — suede, crepe sole, cemented, so the sole cannot be replaced. A chukka is the broader category and can be welted and resoleable, as this is.

Where does the skin come from?
Farmed hide with species documentation. {{VERIFY: name the species and confirm CITES paperwork before publishing this answer.}}
