Broguing suede is harder than broguing calf

This is the part of the shoe that decides whether it was worth making, and almost nobody explains it.

Punching a brogue pattern into smooth calf is a controlled operation. The leather is dense and the surface is flat, so a sharp punch removes a disc cleanly and leaves a hole with a defined edge. Suede does not behave that way. The nap is a raised fibre surface, and a punch pushes those fibres inward and outward rather than cutting them — you get a fuzzy, indistinct hole with a ragged rim, and the nap around it partially closes back over the opening.

The gimping is worse. Gimping is the serrated cut along the edge of the toe cap, and on suede a blade that is anything less than surgical will tear the nap instead of slicing it, leaving a wavy edge rather than a crisp scallop.

Both problems are solvable and both cost time. The punches have to be resharpened far more often than on calf, the perforations are cut slightly larger so they stay legible once the nap settles, and every hole is cleared by hand afterwards so the pattern reads. That is why most suede brogues you find have soft, mushy perforations that blur into the surface within a season.

What a clean perforation looks like

If you are comparing suede brogues, look closely at the medallion on the toe. On a well-made pair each hole is a distinct round opening with the nap lying flat around it, and the pattern is still readable in a photograph taken at arm's length. On a poorly made pair the holes look like dimples or shadows, the medallion loses its shape toward the edges, and the gimped line along the cap wanders.

It is the single most reliable indicator of how carefully a suede brogue was made, and it costs nothing to check.

Why dark brown is the right colour for a suede brogue

Colour choice on a brogue is not just aesthetic — it determines whether you can see the work.

Perforations are read as shadow. Light suede in sand, tan or stone reflects too much light into the holes, so the pattern flattens out and the medallion becomes barely visible at conversational distance. You have paid for detail you cannot see.

Dark brown does the opposite. The nap absorbs light, the perforations read as genuinely dark points against it, and the contrast holds up in daylight and under indoor lighting. Black works too but goes further and swallows the shading in the nap itself. Dark brown is the shade where a suede brogue is most legible — enough depth for the holes to register, enough warmth for the nap's own variation to show.

The zip, and what it does to the nap

A side zip on a suede boot needs handling that a calf boot does not, for two reasons.

Suede is cut from the flesh side of the hide, which gives it less tensile strength than the grain side at a stitched seam. A zip tape stitched straight into suede will eventually pull at the stitch line and tear out. It needs a reinforcing tape or facing behind the seam to carry the load, which is a step that is easy to skip and invisible until the boot fails.

The second issue is abrasion. Zip teeth sit proud of the tape, and every time the boot opens and closes they rub against the suede immediately beside them. Unprotected, that strip of nap flattens and goes shiny within months — you end up with a polished line running up an otherwise matte boot. A small facing along the zip keeps the teeth off the nap.

Do the perforations let water in?

Reasonable question, and the honest answer has two parts.

The perforations do not go through to your foot. They are punched through the outer layer only, and there is a lining behind them, so nothing reaches the inside of the boot directly. Brogueing began as drainage on untanned hide worn across wet ground, but a modern lined brogue is a closed shoe.

What the perforations do is give water a place to sit between the outer and the lining, and on suede that takes longer to dry out than it would on calf. So this is not a wet-weather boot, and treating it as one will shorten its life. Spray it with a suede protector before first wear, and keep a plainer boot for genuinely bad days. Hand welted on a leather sole

The upper, insole and welt are stitched together by hand with no adhesive carrying the structure, and a maker spends the better part of a day per pair.

The specific benefit on a perforated boot: hand welting lets the maker set the tension across the upper deliberately rather than uniformly, which matters when the leather has been punched full of holes. Every perforation is a small interruption in the material's strength, and a brogue pattern concentrated over the toe means the most-flexed part of the boot is also the most weakened. Controlling where the tension falls is how you stop the perforations from stretching into ovals over time. The boot is also fully resoleable, so it has no fixed lifespan.

What to wear them with

A suede brogue boot sits in a specific register: too decorated for business formal, too structured for casual. That middle ground is where it earns its keep.

It works with grey flannel and a sport coat, with charcoal trousers, with chinos in stone or olive, and with dark denim. It does not work under a business suit — the nap plus the perforations is too much texture against worsted. Avoid it with black tailoring, which makes dark brown suede look faded.

Keep the hem short enough that the boot's shaft and the wing pattern are both visible. No break or a slight break. Match your belt to the mid-tone of the suede rather than to the darkest part of it. Two things specific to this boot. A zip gives you no adjustment across the instep — unlike a laced brogue, there is nothing to loosen if the fit is tight, so the width needs to be right at the ordering stage. And suede gives slightly with wear but perforated suede gives less, because each hole interrupts the fibres that would otherwise stretch. Do not order snug expecting it to open up.

Cleaning perforated suede

Perforated suede collects dirt in a way plain suede does not, and it needs a different routine.

Brush along the nap with a suede brush as usual across the plain areas. Around the medallion and the gimped edge, switch to a smaller soft brush — an old toothbrush works — and work in short strokes rather than long ones, so the bristles clear the holes instead of catching on their rims and dragging fibres across them. Long sweeping strokes over a perforated panel are what blurs the pattern.

Dust collects inside the perforations and darkens them over time, which sounds harmless but eventually reads as grime rather than shadow. Clear them every few wears while it is loose. Use a crepe or rubber block on scuffs, never near the punched areas. Suede protector before first wear and a few times a year after.

If the boots get wet, pack them with paper and dry them away from every heat source, then brush the nap back up and clear the perforations once dry. Cedar trees between wearings, and rest them a day between outings.
