What is a wingtip oxford?

A wingtip oxford has a W-shaped toe cap that extends back along the outside of the shoe, with rows of small perforations punched along the seams. When the perforations run around every seam it is called a full brogue. The wing is the shape; the brogueing is the perforations. Both are on this shoe.

Why brogueing has to be punched, and how to tell if it isn't

On a real brogue every perforation is punched clean through the upper. Hold the shoe up to a light and you see daylight coming through the wing, through the leather, through the lining, out the other side. That is a lot of small holes cut precisely enough to sit on a curved seam and not tear.

The cheap version is embossed. A heated die presses the pattern into the surface so it looks punched from a metre away, but the leather is intact. Embossed brogues cost about a third of what punched brogues cost to make, and the difference is invisible in a listing photograph. It is not invisible when you pick the shoe up.

We punch. This shoe has roughly 180 perforations across the two uppers, each one cut and each one gimped by hand at the exposed edge. The wing count is the visible receipt for the workshop hours.

The pinked edge under the wing is called gimping

The trade calls the little serrated edge running along the top of the wing “gimping” or “pinking”, and it is not decoration. A cut leather edge frays. Gimping crimps the fibres into a zigzag so they resist unravelling at the exposed line, the same reason your grandmother’s dressmaking shears had zigzag blades.

Look at the gimped edge on this shoe. The teeth should be even in depth and consistent along the whole line. Machine-gimped edges wander at the corners. Hand-gimped edges do not.

The failure mode a brogue has: cracking between perforations

Two adjacent perforations leave a narrow strip of leather between them, and that strip sits directly on the vamp flex line. Cheap uppers crack there first, the leather is too thin, the punches are too close together, and the strip tears with the shoe on your foot.

What prevents it is thickness. A properly broguable calf is 1.6 to 1.8mm through the wing, and the punch pitch is set so no strip is less than 2mm wide. Thin the leather to keep the shoe light and every perforation becomes a starter crack. This pair is built the other way, thicker in the wing than in the quarters, on purpose.

Three tests you can run on any brogue

The light test. Hold the shoe against a bright window with the tongue open. Punched brogues glow along every perforation. Embossed brogues do not. Ten seconds, in hand, and it settles the question of what you are buying.

The gimp test. Look at the pinked edge along the top of the wing. Turn the shoe and look at the same edge on the medallion at the toe. On a hand-gimped shoe the tooth depth and spacing are identical between the two spots. On a machine-gimped shoe they are close but not the same, because the machine’s feed loses register on tight curves.

The alignment test. The perforations along one seam should mirror the perforations on the seam that meets it. On a well-marked pattern the two rows converge on the exact same point at the corner. On a mass-produced brogue the two rows arrive at the corner a millimetre apart. It looks fine until you know to look, and then it is all you can see.

What this shoe cannot do

It is not a wet-weather shoe. This is where the history lies to you: brogues were originally punched to let bog water drain out of Irish farm shoes, so the internet says brogues are made for rain. Original brogues were unlined and worn wet on purpose. This one is lined, the perforations sit above the lining, and water goes in and stays in. If you walk to work in weather, buy a rubber-soled leather boot for that use and keep these for dry days.

Tan narrows the wardrobe. A tan wingtip works with grey, navy and mid-brown trousers. It fights with black. If your suits are mostly black or charcoal, buy a dark brown or oxblood brogue instead, same shoe, different colour, twice the wears. And for a strict conservative office, brogues are wrong regardless of colour. That is a plain cap toe.

Compared with the two shoes buyers cross-shop

The cap toe is the shoe to own if you own one dress shoe. This is the shoe to own if you own two. Our full range sits in leather oxford shoes.

Sizing, colour and lead time

Closed lacing means the throat cannot open wider than the pattern allows, so a wide forefoot needs to be caught in the size, not the width. Measure against our men’s size guide rather than converting from another brand’s last.

Width is standard on this listing and can be cut wider, and the tan can be mixed to a specific shade. Both go through made to order, not this page. Every pair is built after you order it, so allow the stated lead time before it ships.

The same wingtip pattern is available in other colours across our oxford range, and the open-laced version of the wing is in our derby shoes.

FAQ

Is a wingtip the same as a full brogue?

Almost. Wingtip describes the toe cap shape, the W. Full brogue means wingtip plus perforations along every seam and a medallion at the toe. Every full brogue is a wingtip; a wingtip without perforations exists but is unusual. This shoe is both.

What is the difference between a full brogue, semi-brogue and quarter brogue?

Full brogue: wingtip toe, perforations on every seam, medallion. Semi-brogue: straight cap toe with perforations along the cap edge and a medallion, no wing. Quarter brogue: straight cap toe with perforations along the cap edge only, no medallion. Sellers use the words interchangeably and they are not.

Can I wear a tan brogue with a suit?

With grey or navy, yes, and it reads as smart-casual rather than strictly formal. With black, no, the colours quarrel. In a conservative professional setting where a black cap toe is expected, this is the wrong shoe whatever the colour.

Will the perforations fill with dirt?

Yes, and cleaning them out is part of owning brogues. A stiff-bristled shoe brush and a wooden matchstick clear each perforation individually. It takes about ten minutes a month. If that sounds tedious, buy a plain oxford, brogues punish neglect visibly.

Can they be resoled?

Yes. Some cobblers will fit a canvas gemming rib during repair, which downgrades your shoe permanently. Ask before you hand them over.

How does the sizing compare to your other oxfords?

Same last as our cap toes. A brogue on the same last runs marginally snugger because the perforations sit over the flex point and the punched leather does not stretch the way solid leather does. If you are between sizes on our cap toes, take the same size here.

How long before it ships?

Each pair is built after you order it. The lead time stated at checkout is the one to go by, see made to order for what changes when you customise the pattern.
