Men's camel suede wingtip oxford shoes, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. A full brogue in suede is a different proposition from the same shoe in calf, and camel is the color that makes it work.

What makes it a wingtip

A wingtip, or full brogue, has a toe cap that sweeps back along both sides of the shoe in a W, with the points of the wing running toward the heel. The cap is perforated along its edge, usually gimped with a serrated finish, and there is a medallion punched into the toe itself.

The perforations were originally drainage. Brogues came from Ireland and Scotland as outdoor shoes for wet ground, and the holes let water out of the shoe. That function disappeared a century ago and the pattern stayed, which is why broguing still reads as country rather than as town, and why every perforation you add takes a shoe one step down the formality scale.

Suede plus broguing, and why it needs care

Here is the thing that decides whether a suede brogue is any good: broguing is a cut detail, and cut details need a surface that holds an edge.

On calf, a punched hole has a clean rim. The leather is dense at the surface, so the perforation stays crisp for the life of the shoe and the wing edge reads as a sharp line. On a poor suede the fibers are loose, the punched edges fur up within a season, and the medallion turns into a set of vague dents. The pattern that is the entire point of the shoe goes soft.

The fix is the quality of the suede rather than anything done afterwards. Calf suede from a full thickness hide has a short dense nap that holds a punched edge. Split suede, the leftover layer after the grain has been taken off for something else, does not, and a brogue is the shape where that difference shows fastest.

Suede, nubuck and split suede

Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, buffed to a nap. Nubuck is the grain side, the outer surface, sanded lightly to raise a much finer nap. Nubuck is denser and harder wearing because the tight outer fibers are still there. Split suede is the layer left over after the grain has been removed, napped on both sides, and it is the cheap one: loose, shedding, and shiny at the flex points within a season.

Press your thumb across the surface to tell them apart. Real suede and nubuck take a directional mark and recover when brushed back. Split suede either does not mark or marks and stays marked.

Why camel rather than brown or navy

Camel is a light warm tan and it is the most useful suede color for a brogue for a reason that is really about shadow.

Broguing is read by the eye as shadow, not as holes. Each perforation is a small dark point against the leather around it, and the medallion is a pattern of those points. On a dark suede, navy or dark brown, there is very little contrast between the hole and the surface, so the pattern flattens out and you lose most of the detail you paid for. On camel every perforation reads clearly.

Camel is also the shade where suede's nap does the most work. A napped surface catches light at the top of each fiber and holds shadow beneath, which on a light color produces visible depth across the vamp. On a dark suede that depth is there but you cannot see it.

The trade off is that light suede shows marks more readily than dark, which makes the protector spray and the brush routine below non optional rather than advisable.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, and the shoe resoles repeatedly. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.

Calf suede upper, full brogue perforation with a gimped wing edge and toe medallion, closed oxford lacing with the facings stitched under the vamp, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's leather oxford shoes.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

Because this is an oxford, instep height matters. When laced, the facings should sit close but not touching. Wide apart means the shoe is too small across the instep and wear will not correct it; touching means it is too big.

Suede gives slightly more than calf across the first few wears because the fibers are looser, so err firm rather than roomy. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us first if you have a high instep or are between widths.

What to wear them with

Camel suede brogues are a spring and autumn shoe and they want cloth with some texture of its own.

Navy is the strongest pairing by a distance, in flannel, hopsack or a soft worsted. Mid gray works. Olive and brown tailoring work. Stone, cream and olive chinos work and this is probably how most pairs get worn. Dark denim works.

What they do not want is a formal business suit in smooth worsted, where a light suede full brogue is two steps too casual, or black tailoring, which fights the warmth in the camel. Match your belt to the tan rather than trying to match the texture, since a suede belt with a suede shoe is a match too far.

Also in the range: the black wingtip oxford and the mahogany wingtip oxford in full grain calf.

Care, and the brogue specific part

No polish, ever. Wax and cream fill the nap, flatten it and leave a shiny patch that does not come back.

Brush with a crepe or rubber suede brush in one direction after each wear. On a brogue there is a second step most people skip: brush across the perforated areas as well, because the nap collapses into the punched holes and the pattern goes soft. A small brush worked over the medallion and along the wing edge keeps the perforations open and the pattern reading.

Apply a protector spray before the first wear and reapply every couple of months, which matters more on camel than on a dark suede. Use a suede eraser on marks, gently. If they get soaked, stuff them with paper, dry naturally away from heat, then brush the nap up once completely dry, because brushing wet suede mats it.

What to expect when you order

Cut and lasted after you order. Suede varies in depth of tone hide to hide, so yours will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is a wingtip?
A full brogue: a toe cap that sweeps back along both sides of the shoe in a W, with perforation along the cap edge and a medallion punched into the toe. The points of the wing run toward the heel.

Why do brogues have holes?
They were drainage. Brogues came from Ireland and Scotland as outdoor shoes for wet ground and the perforations let water out. The function disappeared a century ago and the pattern stayed, which is why broguing still reads as country rather than town.

Does broguing make a shoe less formal?
Yes. Every perforation takes a shoe one step down the formality scale, which is why a full brogue is not interchangeable with a plain cap toe oxford however similar the color.

Why does suede quality matter more on a brogue?
Because broguing is a cut detail and cut details need a surface that holds an edge. On poor suede the punched edges fur up within a season and the medallion turns into vague dents, so the pattern that is the whole point of the shoe goes soft.

What is the difference between suede, nubuck and split suede?
Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, napped. Nubuck is the grain side sanded to a finer nap and is denser and harder wearing. Split suede is the leftover layer after the grain has been removed and goes loose and shiny at the flex points within a season.

Why camel rather than a dark suede?
Because broguing is read as shadow, not as holes. Each perforation is a small dark point against the leather around it, and on a dark suede there is too little contrast, so the pattern flattens and you lose the detail. On camel every perforation reads clearly.

Does light suede mark more easily?
Yes, which is why the protector spray and the brushing routine are not optional on this color. Spray before the first wear and reapply every couple of months.

How do I brush a suede brogue?
In one direction across the plain areas with a crepe or rubber suede brush, and then across the perforated areas as well. The nap collapses into the punched holes and softens the pattern, so a small brush over the medallion and along the wing edge keeps the perforations open.

What happens if they get wet?
Stuff them with paper and dry naturally away from heat, then brush the nap back up once they are completely dry. Brushing wet suede mats it permanently.
