Product Details

Black Norwegian stitch button boots for men, with a hand stitched apron seam over the toe and a row of buttons up the outside of the ankle. Goodyear welted on a leather sole, made to order in your size and width.

Two rare details on one boot

Most boots carry one thing worth paying for. This one carries two, and they come from completely different traditions, which is why the combination almost never appears.

The apron seam is Norwegian stitching, a raised hand worked seam joining the apron panel to the vamp. The closure is a Victorian button fastening, a row of buttons up the outside of the ankle closed with a hook. Neither is decorative. Both are slow to make, and both are the reason this boot costs what it does.

Norwegian stitching is a seam, not a construction method

This is the single most confused pair of terms in shoemaking and sellers use them interchangeably when they should not.

Norwegian stitching is a visible, raised hand stitch joining an apron panel to the vamp of the upper. The apron is the separate piece of leather laid over the front of the boot, and the stitch runs around its edge and often up the center of the toe as a split. Italian makers call it Norvegese stitching. It is a seam on the upper. That is what this boot has.

A Norwegian welt is something else entirely: a way of joining the upper to the sole, turning the leather outward and stitching through it horizontally then vertically, which produces a visible double row of stitching near the sole and a very rugged, water resistant, heavy boot. It comes from Alpine mountaineering footwear.

A boot can have either, both, or neither. A listing that says only Norwegian has told you very little. These boots are Goodyear welted, with Norwegian stitching on the apron. The full range sits in Norwegian stitch shoes and boots.

Why the apron seam has to be worked by hand

The seam curves in three dimensions. It runs flat along the sides of the vamp, then rises over the crown of the toe, and the two leather edges being joined sit at constantly changing angles as the upper is worked over the last.

A machine follows a fixed path at fixed tension. It will complete the seam, but the stitches bunch on the inside of every curve and gap on the outside, and the raised profile rises and falls unevenly. Worked by hand, each stitch is placed individually with the tension set for that specific point, which gives even spacing the whole way round and a seam that stands consistently proud.

It is the slowest single operation in making this boot, slower than the welting itself. On a boot whose visual identity is one seam, it is the whole difference between a good pair and an ordinary one.

The button fastening, and what it asks of you

A row of buttons runs up the outside of the ankle shaft, closed with a buttonhook, a small hooked tool that pulls each button through its loop. This was standard dress footwear in the 1890s and it disappeared for a practical reason: laces are faster.

What you get in exchange is a closed line with no lacing and no elastic across the ankle, which is the cleanest silhouette any boot can have, and a fastening that does not work loose.

What you give up is adjustment. A lace can be slackened, an elastic gusset stretches, a buckle moves a hole. A buttoned boot closes exactly where the buttonholes were placed when it was made, and nowhere else. It also takes longer to put on, and you will need the buttonhook, which is not optional rather than a period affectation.

Line across the ankle Cleanest Broken by facings Clean, until the gusset bags

Why black suits this particular boot

An apron seam registers through light and shadow rather than color. It reads because it stands proud of the surface and catches light along its ridge while the leather either side falls away.

Black suppresses that. There is so little tonal range in a black upper that the seam becomes texture rather than a drawn line, and the boot quiets down considerably. Combined with a buttoned closure, which is already unusual, that restraint is what keeps the boot from tipping into costume.

If you want the handwork to be legible from across a room, brown is the better choice and we make it: see the dark brown Norwegian stitch boots. If you want the detail to be something the wearer knows about and nobody else immediately notices, black is the answer.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the boot, so a cobbler can replace it repeatedly without disturbing the apron seam above it. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and beds to your foot across the first month.

Full grain calf upper, leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service.

Sizing: read this before ordering

This is the least forgiving fit we make, and it is worth being direct about why.

A buttoned closure has no give whatsoever. There is no lace to slacken and no elastic to stretch, so the shaft circumference is fixed the moment the buttonholes are placed. If it is tight it stays tight, and if it is loose the boot gapes at the ankle.

So we need more from you than usual: your shoe size, your width, and the circumference of your ankle and your calf at the height the shaft will finish. Measure over the sock you would wear. Send all of that through contact before ordering rather than ordering blind.

One further point specific to an apron boot. The toe carries two layers of leather, vamp plus apron, with a raised seam between them, so the front is stiffer than a single layer upper and gives less during break in. Order your true size rather than counting on the toe opening up. Read the men's shoe size guide as well.

What to wear them with

This is a dress boot with genuine period character, which puts it in a narrow but real band. It works with charcoal and mid gray flannel, with black pants, which few brown free options manage, and under a sport coat rather than a business suit.

Keep everything else completely plain. The apron seam and the button row are two points of interest already, and a third turns the outfit into a costume. Black belt, hardware matched to your watch, no brown accessories.

Keep the pant hem short enough that the buttons stay visible. Burying them under a hem removes both the reason for the boot and any explanation for why it took so long to put on. See the rest of our leather boots.

Care, and the two places this boot needs it

Standard black care applies, brush after each wear, black or neutral cream two or three times a year worked in thin. Two areas need more than that.

The apron seam. It stands proud, so it contacts everything before the rest of the boot does, curbs, table legs, your opposite foot. Work cream along its length rather than across it, and check the stitching each time for thread starting to fray. A frayed stitch caught early is a quick cobbler job. Left alone the seam opens and the repair becomes a rebuild.

The button loops. Cream collects at the buttonholes and dries pale, and on black that shows immediately. Clear each loop with a soft brush before the cream sets. Check the loops for stretching too, since a stretched loop lets its button slip and the whole row loses tension.

Cedar trees between wearings, and rest the boots a day between outings.

What to expect when you order

Built after you order, not pulled from a shelf, and we will not start until we have your ankle and calf measurements. Because the apron seam is stitched by hand, stitch spacing will be very close between pairs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is Norwegian stitching?
A visible raised hand stitch joining an apron panel to the vamp of the upper. Italian makers call it Norvegese stitching. It is a seam on the upper, not a construction method.

Is Norwegian stitching the same as a Norwegian welt?
No, and this is the most confused pair of terms in shoemaking. A Norwegian welt is a way of joining the upper to the sole, turning the leather outward and stitching through it twice, and it produces a much heavier boot. These are Goodyear welted with Norwegian stitching on the apron.

How do button boots fasten?
With a buttonhook, a small hooked tool that pulls each button through its loop. It is not a period affectation, it is the only practical way to fasten them.

Do I need a buttonhook?
Yes. A row of buttons cannot realistically be fastened by hand, which is the practical reason the style disappeared once laces became standard.

How much adjustment does a buttoned boot have?
None. The shaft circumference is fixed when the buttonholes are placed. That is why we ask for ankle and calf measurements before starting rather than just a shoe size.

Why black rather than brown for this boot?
Black suppresses the apron seam into texture rather than a drawn line, which keeps an already unusual boot from reading as costume. Brown shows the handwork far more clearly if that is what you want.

Is the apron seam machine stitched?
No. The seam curves in three dimensions and a machine cannot follow it at even tension, so the stitches bunch on the inside of curves and gap on the outside.

Will the toe soften with wear?
Slowly. The doubled leather across the apron makes the front stiffer than a plain vamp, so order your true size rather than counting on break in.

Can these be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Goodyear welted construction means the sole is stitched to a welt rather than glued, so the apron seam is never disturbed.

Do you make wide widths?
Yes. D, E, EE and EEE, cut to your measurement, though on this style we need your ankle and calf circumference as well.
