Men's Black Penny Loafers
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Black penny loafers in full grain calf, hand welted, made to order in your US size and width. You can buy a black penny loafer for sixty dollars, and the first thing this page should do is explain what the difference actually is — because it is not the shape and it is not the colour.
What you are choosing between
A sixty-dollar penny loafer and this one look similar in a photograph. They are different objects.
| Around $60 | Around $150–200 | This | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upper | Coated split or corrected grain | Corrected or full grain | Full grain calf |
| Sole attachment | Cemented — glued | Blake stitched or cemented | Hand welted |
| Resoleable | No | Once or twice, with a Blake machine | Repeatedly |
| Insole | Foam or board | Foam over board | Solid leather, moulds to your foot |
| Saddle | Glued or tacked | Usually stitched | Stitched through |
| Realistic life | One to two years | Three to five years | Decades, across several soles |
The honest version: if you want a black loafer for occasional wear and you are not sure you will like the shape, buy the cheap one. It will do that job. There is no sense spending several hundred dollars finding out whether you are a loafer person.
What you cannot do with a cemented shoe is keep it. The sole is glued to the upper, and when it wears through the shoe is finished — there is no mechanism to replace it. So the sixty-dollar loafer is not cheap over ten years; it is four or five sixty-dollar loafers, plus the fact that none of them will ever fit better than the day you bought it.
This shoe is designed to be taken apart. The welt is sewn to a holdfast cut into a solid leather insole, so a cobbler removes the sole and fits a new one without touching the upper, as many times as the upper lasts. And the insole is leather rather than foam, which means it takes an impression of your foot over the first month and holds it — while foam compresses, keeps compressing, and eventually offers nothing.
What a penny loafer is, and what to check
A penny loafer is a slip-on with a strap — the saddle — running across the vamp, with a small slot cut into the middle of it. The slot is where students in the 1930s and 40s kept a coin, which is where the name comes from.
Three details separate a well-made one from the rest, all visible in a photograph.
The saddle. It should be a separate piece of leather stitched down at both ends — not a strip glued on, and not a shape stamped into the vamp. Both ends take tension every time you put the shoe on, and a glued saddle works loose within a couple of years. Once one end goes, the strap stands away from the vamp and it cannot be repaired invisibly.
The beef rolls. These are the raised, stitched swellings where the saddle meets the sides of the shoe. On a properly made loafer they are genuine rolls of leather. On a cheap one they are a decorative seam pressed to look like one.
The slot edges. They should be finished and turned rather than raw cut. A raw edge is where the leather starts to stretch, and a slot that has elongated from a neat rectangle into a slack opening is the detail people notice.
Penny, tassel, bit, kiltie
| On the vamp | Reads as | |
|---|---|---|
| Penny | A strap with a slot | The most versatile loafer |
| Tassel | A lace around the topline ending in two tassels | The dressiest. Closest to business wear |
| Bit | A metal snaffle across the vamp | Dressy but reads branded |
| Kiltie | A fringed flap over the front | Distinctly casual |
If you want the dressiest version of a black loafer, that is the tassel rather than the penny. The penny is the one you will wear more.
"Full grain" is doing real work in the title
A hide is split into layers. The outer layer, where the fibres are densest and the natural grain sits, is full grain. Below it is top grain — the same layer sanded flat with an artificial grain embossed back on to hide scarring. Below that are the inner splits, coated and printed, and sold as "genuine leather."
That last phrase is advertised as a quality marker and sits close to the bottom of the range. If a listing tells you only "genuine leather" or "real leather," it has told you the grade by declining to name it.
On a black shoe this matters more than usual, because you cannot see it. Under black pigment, a corrected hide looks identical to full grain for the first year. Then the coating begins to fail at the flex crease — a fine cracking along the fold — while full grain simply creases and carries on.
{{VERIFY: confirm full grain calf. The title and a full section stake on it.}}
Where a black loafer sits, honestly
A penny loafer is not a formal shoe. No lacing means a ceiling on formality that colour and construction do not lift. Not for black tie, not for a funeral, and marginal in a strictly conservative legal or financial office.
What black does give you is the widest range a loafer can have. A brown penny loafer is a casual shoe; a black one reaches from dark denim up to a soft flannel suit, which no other colour in this shape manages. That range is the reason to buy black rather than the more obviously interesting brown.
If this is your first pair of proper shoes, though, buy a black cap toe oxford first. It covers interviews, funerals and everything where being wrong is expensive. The loafer is the second or third pair.
What goes wrong with a penny loafer
Four things, three of them specific to having no laces.
Heel slip. The only things holding your foot in are the throat line and the heel counter. A loafer even slightly too long slips at the heel every step, and no amount of break-in fixes it — that is a fit error, not a settling issue.
The topline stretches. This is the failure that ends loafers. Every time you put the shoe on, the topline takes the full tension of your heel going past it. Levering your foot in rather than using a shoehorn is what does the damage, and once the topline has gone slack the shoe never grips again. A shoehorn genuinely extends the life of a loafer — it is not fussiness.
The saddle ends work loose, as above, if they were glued rather than stitched.
Cream collects at the saddle seam. It builds in the channel where the strap meets the vamp, dries pale, and outlines the saddle in a lighter tone. On black this is the most common reason a loafer looks tired. Brush along that seam rather than across it, and keep cream off the ridge.
One more thing about black specifically: creasing shows worse than on any other colour, because there is no tonal variation to break up light across the vamp. A correct width reduces it considerably — a shoe that flexes in the wrong place creases in the wrong place, permanently — but nothing eliminates it.
Sizing: made to order, and stricter than a lace-up
Made to order in US sizes, widths D through EEE.
A lace-up gives you a second chance: adjust the lacing, and the leather eventually gives. A loafer gives you nothing. Too narrow and it grips across the ball with no way to ease it. Too long and it slips forever, and it stretches the topline faster because you will be levering it on.
So length and ball girth matter equally, and neither can be traded against the other. Do not size up in length to buy width — order your actual length and specify the width.
Measure against the size guide. If you are between widths, get heel slip in loafers generally, have a low instep, or have spent years in a D because that is all shops carry, tell us before you order. On a made-to-order shoe that conversation is free beforehand and impossible afterwards.
What to wear them with
Dark denim is what most people will use them for and it works. Charcoal and mid-grey flannel work and take the shoe upward. Navy works. Olive works.
Avoid brown and tan trousers above black shoes. Loafers want a shorter break than lace-ups so the saddle and topline stay visible — a full break buries the only detail on the shoe.
Black belt, matching. Socks dark and thin, or none in summer, though bare feet in a leather-lined shoe make cedar trees and rest days more necessary rather than less.
Care
Neutral cream, sparingly, two or three times a season — not pigmented black cream, which builds up in the saddle seam and along the topline and dries grey. Horsehair brush after wearing. Cedar trees between wears, and a day off between outings so the leather dries and the insole keeps taking your shape rather than setting damp.
And a shoehorn. On a loafer it is the single most useful thing you can own.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted for you after the order rather than taken from a shelf. {{VERIFY: state the lead time in weeks. Competitors on this search ship from stock, so silence on timing is conspicuous.}}
Details on made to order, terms on shipping and returns. The rest of the slip-ons are in loafers.
Frequently asked questions
What is a penny loafer?
A slip-on with a strap across the vamp and a small slot cut into it. The name comes from American students in the 1930s and 40s keeping a coin in the slot.
What are beef rolls?
The raised, stitched swellings of leather where the saddle strap meets the sides of the shoe. Genuine rolls on a well-made loafer; a pressed decorative seam on a cheap one.
Why do these cost more than a $60 penny loafer?
Full grain rather than coated split, a leather insole rather than foam, a stitched saddle rather than a glued one, and hand welting rather than cement. The practical difference: this one can be resoled indefinitely and a cemented shoe cannot be resoled at all.
Is "genuine leather" good quality?
No. It is a trade term for coated inner splits and sits below top grain and full grain. These are full grain calf.
Can you wear black penny loafers with a suit?
With a soft suit in flannel or a summer cloth, yes. With business tailoring in a conservative office, take a cap toe oxford instead.
Can you wear black penny loafers with jeans?
Yes, and it is what most people wear them with. Dark denim, slight break so the saddle stays visible.
Do I need a shoehorn?
On a loafer, genuinely yes. Levering your heel past the topline is what stretches it, and a stretched topline is what ends a loafer.
Do penny loafers stretch?
The upper gives a little across the ball over the first weeks. The length does not change, so a loafer that is too long will slip at the heel permanently.
Can they be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Hand welting means the sole comes off below the welt without disturbing the upper. Most loafers are Blake stitched or cemented, and cemented ones cannot be resoled at all.
How should I polish them?
Neutral cream, sparingly. Pigmented black cream collects in the saddle seam and along the topline and dries grey, which is what makes a black loafer look tired.
