A wingtip is a toe shape, not a lacing style

The two words get used as if they meant the same thing and they do not, which is why people end up buying the wrong shoe.

Wingtip describes the toe cap. It is a W shape, pointed at the center and sweeping back along both sides of the shoe toward the heel, and from above it looks like a bird with its wings out. That is where the name comes from.

Oxford describes the lacing. The quarters carrying the eyelets are stitched underneath the vamp, so the throat closes into a clean line and the shoe only opens so far. A derby stitches those quarters on top instead.

Why navy is the argument for a second wingtip

How to check the perforation is punched, not pressed

The cheap version of a brogue is embossed. A heated die presses the pattern into the surface so it reads as punched from a meter away, but no hole is cut and the leather is intact underneath.

Hold the shoe up to a bright window with the tongue open. Punched perforations glow, because daylight comes through the leather, through the lining and out the other side. Embossed ones stay dark. It takes ten seconds and it settles the question before you pay.

The second check is the gimping, the small serrated edge running along the top of the wing. That zigzag is not decoration. A cut leather edge frays, and crimping the fibers into a zigzag stops it unraveling along the exposed line. Look at the tooth depth where the wing meets the medallion at the toe: hand gimped edges hold the same spacing through the curve, machine gimped edges lose register.

The failure mode a brogue has

Two adjacent perforations leave a narrow strip of leather between them, and on the vamp that strip sits directly on the flex line. On a thin or poorly chosen hide, that strip is where the shoe cracks first, with the shoe still on your foot.

What prevents it is thickness and punch pitch. A hide broguable at this scale needs to be substantial through the wing, and the punch spacing set so no strip between holes is left too narrow. Thinning the leather to keep the shoe light turns every perforation into a starter crack.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the shoe, which is what lets a cobbler replace it without disturbing the upper. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and beds to the shape of your foot across the first month.

Fit and sizing

Closed lacing means the throat cannot open past what the pattern allows, so an oxford is the least forgiving dress shoe to fit and a high instep has to be caught in the size rather than adjusted for later. Laced correctly the facings should sit about a thumb width apart. If they touch, the shoe is too big.

One thing specific to a brogue. Punched leather does not stretch the way solid leather does, because every perforation interrupts the fiber structure, so a full brogue runs marginally snugger than a plain shoe on the same last. What to wear navy brogues with

Cream collects inside the perforations and dries pale, which on navy shows immediately and is the fastest way to make a good brogue look neglected. Work cream in thin, then clear the holes with a soft brush before it sets rather than after.

A wooden matchstick or a soft toothbrush clears anything that has already dried in. Beyond that: brush after each wear, condition two or three times a year, cedar trees between wears, and rest the pair a day between outings.
