Men's jodhpur boots in full grain calf with a green and brown patina built by hand in layers, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Two colors on one upper is the hardest thing a patina artist is asked to do, and the wraparound strap is the detail that separates a jodhpur from every other ankle boot.

What makes a boot a jodhpur

A jodhpur is an ankle boot closed by a single strap that wraps around the shaft and fastens with a buckle on the outside. No laces, no zip, no elastic. The strap is the entire closure, and it is also the entire adjustment range.

The name is literal. The boot comes from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, and it arrived in British riding dress in the 1890s alongside the jodhpur pant. The pant is the reason the boot exists. Jodhpur pants are cut full at the thigh and tight from the knee down, with a reinforced lower leg, which meant a rider no longer needed a tall boot to protect the calf. A short boot would do, provided it closed tightly enough at the ankle to keep dirt out and stay put in the stirrup. The wraparound strap solved both.

That origin still shows in how the boot fits today. A jodhpur sits closer to the ankle than a chukka or a Chelsea because it was designed to be snug there, not roomy.

Jodhpur, chukka and Chelsea, side by side

These three get used interchangeably online and they are not interchangeable. The difference is the closure, and the closure changes both the fit and how dressy the boot reads.

Boot Closure Shaft How dressy
Jodhpur Wraparound strap and buckle Close cut, just over the ankle bone Dressiest of the three, the buckle reads as deliberate
Chukka Two or three eyelets, open lacing Ankle height, more relaxed Most casual, derby lacing keeps it informal
Chelsea Elastic gusset, no fastening at all Taller, clean sided Dressy but sleek, closer to a dress shoe silhouette

The practical consequence: a jodhpur has real adjustment where a Chelsea has none. If your ankle is slim or your instep is high, the buckle takes up the difference. A Chelsea gusset either fits or it does not.

Why a two color patina is harder than one

A single color patina is a gradation. The artist works one pigment family, deep at the toe and heel, lifting through the middle, and the eye reads it as one movement. Every layer reinforces the last.

Green over brown is a different problem, because the two colors have to meet somewhere and that meeting has to look intentional rather than accidental. Three things can go wrong.

The transition goes muddy. Green and brown sit close together on the wheel, and a careless blend where they overlap turns to a flat olive sludge that reads as a mistake rather than a choice. The fix is to keep the two families separated on the shoe and let a narrow band do the work, rather than blending them across a wide area.

The green goes cold against the brown. Brown is warm by definition. A green mixed toward blue will fight it and the boot looks like two shoes stuck together. The green has to carry enough yellow to sit in the same temperature family as the brown behind it.

The base pulls both. Patina is built on crust leather, which is tanned but undyed, and crust is a warm natural tan rather than white. That warmth helps brown and fights green, which means the green side needs more layers than the brown side to reach the same depth. An artist who applies both evenly ends up with a boot where one half looks finished and the other looks thin.

This is why two tone patina costs more time than a single color, and why it is uncommon. More of the same technique in single colors in the hand painted patina collection.

Hand painted or sprayed, and how to tell

Look for a boundary. Hand layered pigment has no edge you can point to, because each coat is applied thin and the transition is continuous. Sprayed shading stops, usually as a soft oval on the toe, and on a two color boot the give away is the meeting line: a spray produces a hard mask line where the two colors meet, while hand work grades through it.

On a worn pair the difference is clearer still. Hand applied color deepens at the flex crease because the pigment is in the grain and gets burnished by movement. A sprayed film sits on top as a coating, so it cracks and lightens at the same crease.

The strap, and what to check on any jodhpur

The strap carries every bit of tension the closure ever sees, and it is where a cheaply made jodhpur fails first.

Where the strap is anchored. It should be stitched through the quarter, not tacked or glued. An anchored strap stays flat against the shaft for the life of the boot. A tacked one works loose and begins to stand away.

The keeper loop. The loop that holds the strap end down after the buckle is not decorative. Without it the strap tail flaps and curls, and once leather has curled it does not go back. It should be a proper stitched loop, not a slit.

Buckle and roller. A rolling buckle bar is easier on the strap than a fixed one, because the strap slides rather than dragging over the same point every time. Fixed bars wear a visible notch into the strap within a few years.

Punch holes. They should be finished, not raw punched, for the same reason a belt hole is finished. Raw holes elongate under repeated tension until the strap no longer sits where you set it.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper. The boot can be resoled repeatedly without disturbing the leather above it, which on a hand painted shoe is the whole point, because the patina is most of the cost and it survives every resole.

Full grain calf upper, leather sole without fiddle back, stacked leather heel. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and compresses to your foot over the first month of wear, so the footbed ends up shaped to you rather than to a last. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

A jodhpur is more forgiving than a Chelsea and less forgiving than a lace up. The strap gives you adjustment around the shaft, so a slim ankle or a high instep is not a problem. What the strap cannot fix is length or ball girth, and those are the two measurements that decide whether the boot is right.

Order your true length rather than sizing up for width, and specify the width separately. Sizing up to gain room across the ball makes the boot too long, and a boot that is too long slips at the heel no matter how tightly you set the buckle. Measure against the men's shoe size guide, and if you are between widths or have a high instep, tell us before you order. That conversation is free beforehand and impossible afterwards.

What to wear them with

Green and brown is an autumn palette and it wants earth tones above it.

Brown and olive tailoring is the natural home, along with tweed, moleskin and corduroy. Stone, tan and olive chinos work in a smart casual register. Dark denim works and is probably the most common way these get worn.

What the boot does not want is a cool palette above it. Charcoal and navy fight the green, and black is out entirely. Match your belt to the brown in the patina rather than the green, because the brown is the anchor color and the green is the accent. Browse the rest of the boots collection, or see the same shape in a single color in our pink patina jodhpur boots.

Caring for a two color patina

Neutral cream only. This matters more here than on a single color boot, because pigmented polish will drag one color into the other at the transition and once the two have mixed there is no separating them again.

Keep them out of direct sunlight. Every patina fades under UV, but a two color boot fades unevenly: green loses pigment faster than brown, so a boot left in a sunny hallway ends up with the green side washed out while the brown side looks untouched, and the contrast that was the point of the shoe disappears.

Brush along the seams rather than across them so cream does not build up in the channels and dry pale. Use cedar trees between wearings, let them rest a day between wears, and dry naturally away from heat if they get wet.

What to expect when you order

Every pair is painted by hand after you order, so no two are identical. Yours will be close to the photographs rather than a copy of them, and on a two color patina the variation is more visible than on a single color because the meeting line falls slightly differently each time. That is the nature of hand work. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is a jodhpur boot?
An ankle boot closed by a single strap that wraps around the shaft and buckles on the outside. No laces, no zip, no elastic. It comes from Jodhpur in Rajasthan, India, and entered British riding dress in the 1890s alongside the jodhpur pant.

What is the difference between a jodhpur and a chukka?
The closure. A jodhpur uses a wraparound strap and buckle and sits close to the ankle. A chukka uses two or three eyelets with open lacing and sits more relaxed. The jodhpur reads dressier because the buckle looks deliberate where derby lacing reads casual.

How is a jodhpur different from a Chelsea boot?
A Chelsea closes with an elastic gusset and has no fastening at all, so it either fits or it does not. A jodhpur has real adjustment at the buckle, which matters if your ankle is slim or your instep is high.

Why is a two color patina harder than one color?
Because the two colors have to meet and the meeting has to look intentional. Blend them carelessly and the transition goes to a flat olive sludge. The green also needs more layers than the brown, because the natural crust leather underneath is warm and fights green while helping brown.

How can I tell hand painted patina from sprayed color?
Look for a boundary. Hand layered pigment has no edge because each coat is thin and the transition is continuous. A spray leaves a hard mask line where the two colors meet, and on a worn pair a sprayed film cracks and lightens at the flex crease while hand work deepens there.

What should I check on the strap?
Four things. The strap should be stitched through the quarter rather than tacked. There should be a proper stitched keeper loop to hold the tail down. A rolling buckle bar wears the strap less than a fixed one. And the punch holes should be finished rather than raw, or they elongate under tension.

What size should I order?
Your true length, with the width specified separately. Do not size up to gain room across the ball, because that makes the boot too long and a long boot slips at the heel no matter how tight you set the buckle. Widths run D through EEE.

Can I polish these with regular shoe polish?
No. Neutral cream only. Pigmented polish drags one color into the other at the transition, and once the two have mixed there is no separating them again.

Will my pair look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. Every pair is painted by hand after you order and the meeting line between the two colors falls slightly differently each time. On a two color patina that variation is more visible than on a single color.

Can these be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Goodyear welted construction stitches the outsole to a welt rather than gluing it to the upper, so the sole can be replaced without disturbing the painted leather above it. On a hand painted boot that is the whole point, since the patina is most of the cost.
