Green Suede Tassel Loafers for Men
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
These are green suede tassel loafers, made to order in {{VERIFY: workshop location}}. The tassels hang from a leather lace that runs through the throat of the shoe, the way a tassel loafer is supposed to be made — not a decorative strip glued to the surface. The shade is {{VERIFY: exact shade name — olive / forest / bottle}}, which in suede reads as an earth tone rather than a bright colour.
What a tassel loafer actually is
A tassel loafer is a slip-on shoe with a leather lace threaded through the throat opening, tied so that two tasselled ends hang over the vamp. The lace is functional in origin — it once adjusted the fit. On most modern pairs it is fixed, but it still passes through the shoe rather than sitting on top of it.
That distinction is the whole quality question on this style, and it is the first thing to check on any pair.
Tassel, penny, kiltie and Belgian — the differences
These four get used interchangeably in retail copy. They are four different shoes.
| Style | Defining feature | Formality |
|---|---|---|
| Tassel loafer | Leather lace through the throat, tasselled ends over the vamp | Business casual to smart casual |
| Penny loafer | Flat leather strap across the vamp with a cut-out slot | Slightly more formal in black or dark brown |
| Kiltie loafer | Fringed leather flap laid over the tongue. Can be combined with tassels | Casual |
| Belgian loafer | Small flat bow, unlined or lightly lined, very soft construction | Casual, often indoor or resort |
If you searched for a penny loafer with tassels, the shoe you want is a tassel loafer. The two do not combine — a penny strap and a tassel lace occupy the same place on the vamp.
{{VERIFY: does this pair have a kiltie? If yes, add one sentence here naming it. If no, delete this bracket.}}
Why suede suits a green shoe better than calf does
Suede is the napped underside of the hide, sanded to raise a short pile. That pile scatters light instead of reflecting it, so any colour applied to suede comes back to the eye desaturated and matte.
This is why saturated colours are conventionally done in suede. The same green in smooth calf would reflect a hard specular highlight along the vamp and read as a bright, glossy green — which is a difficult shoe to wear. In suede the same dye reads as a muted earth tone that sits comfortably beside grey flannel, tan chinos and navy.
It also means the colour will look different in different light. Photographs of green suede taken in daylight and under indoor lighting can look like two separate shoes. That is the material behaving normally, not a fault.
The heel slip nobody warns you about
A loafer has no laces. On an oxford or a derby, lacing takes up slack as the leather relaxes around your foot. A loafer has no such adjustment — the shoe is held on entirely by the throat opening and the stiffness of the heel counter.
Two things then go wrong on cheaply made loafers, and they compound.
First, a soft heel counter collapses. The counter is the stiffener between the lining and the outer leather at the back of the shoe. If it is thin card or unreinforced leather, it slumps within weeks and the shoe starts to lift off the heel with every step.
Second, suede stretches more than calf. A suede loafer that felt correct on day one is looser after a month of wear, because the nap-side fibre structure gives more than a smooth grain surface does.
Together, those two mean the classic complaint: the loafer that fit fine in the first week and slaps against your heel by the second month. The prevention is a firm counter and a fit that is genuinely snug across the instep when new. Ours use {{VERIFY: heel counter material and whether it is leather-stiffened}}.
A test you can run on any photograph. Look at where the tassel lace meets the throat of the shoe. On a properly made pair you can see the lace pass through the leather — there are visible entry points, and the lace is continuous around the throat. On a cheap pair the "lace" is a strip laid on the surface, stitched or glued down, with the tassels attached at the ends and no entry points anywhere. That single detail separates a made tassel loafer from a decorated slip-on, and it is visible in any decent side photograph.
How these are built
{{VERIFY: construction method — Goodyear welted / Blake stitched / hand-welted. Do not publish this section until confirmed.}}
The distinction matters more on a loafer than on a laced shoe, for the reason above: the construction is doing the job laces would otherwise do. A welted shoe carries a rib and a welt that anchor the upper, the insole and the sole together, which holds the shape of the throat and heel over time and allows the sole to be replaced without disturbing the upper. A Blake-stitched shoe is sewn straight through from insole to outsole — lighter and more flexible, fewer layers, and it can be resoled, but the shoe holds less structure as it ages.
If you want to know which construction a given pair of ours uses before you order, ask us and we will tell you plainly. It is on the spec sheet for every last we work on.

How formal is a suede tassel loafer?
Business casual at the top of its range, and comfortably casual below that. A suede tassel loafer is not a business-formal shoe. In a conservative office, with a dark suit, the correct shoe is a black calf oxford — and if that is what you need, buy that instead of this.
Where this shoe is right: an unstructured blazer with grey flannel or tan chinos. Summer suiting in linen or cotton. Anything smart-casual where a lace-up would read as too stiff. Green in particular sits well with the earth-tone end of tailoring — olive, tan, brown, cream — and less well with sharp business greys.
What to wear with green suede loafers
Tan or stone chinos are the easiest pairing, because the colours share a warm base. Grey flannel works and is the more interesting choice. Navy works. Mid-blue denim works if the rest of the outfit is dressed up.
Black tailoring does not work with green suede. The two fight, and there is no styling trick that fixes it.
Socks: a low or no-show sock is conventional in warm weather. If you wear these into autumn, a tonal olive or brown ribbed sock is the safer choice than a contrast. More on pairing in our shoe style guide, and you can see the rest of the range in men's loafers.
Sizing and fit
Order these snug across the instep. Not painful — snug. Suede gives, and a loafer has no laces to take up the slack later, so a pair that feels perfectly comfortable in the box on day one is usually half a size too big by the second month.

If you are between sizes, have a wide foot, a high instep, or one foot measurably larger than the other, send us your measurements before ordering. Made to order means we can work to your foot rather than to a standard last, and it costs you nothing to ask.
Caring for suede
Suede has one specific failure mode and it is preventable.
Water carries dissolved minerals and dust into the nap. As the water evaporates it draws those deposits to the edge of the wet area, where they dry as a hard-edged ring — a tidemark. Once set, a tidemark is difficult to remove because the deposit sits inside the fibre rather than on top of it.
Three things prevent it. Treat the shoes with an impregnating spray before the first wear and again every few months. If they do get wet, wet the whole panel evenly with clean water rather than letting a patch dry on its own, so there is no edge for a mark to form at. And brush the nap with a brass or crepe brush when dry, against the lie of the pile, to lift it back up.
The second failure is nap crush — the pile flattening and going shiny at the flex point across the vamp. Brushing addresses it. A cedar shoe tree between wears reduces how sharply the vamp creases in the first place.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a tassel loafer and a penny loafer?
A tassel loafer has a leather lace threaded through the throat of the shoe with tasselled ends hanging over the vamp. A penny loafer has a flat strap across the vamp with a cut-out slot. They are different shoes and the two features cannot be combined, because they occupy the same place on the shoe.
Are green suede tassel loafers too casual for the office?
For business casual, no. For business formal or a conservative professional setting with a dark suit, yes — a black calf oxford is the right shoe there.
Is suede the same as nubuck?
No. Suede is the napped underside of the split hide. Nubuck is the outer grain surface sanded to raise a nap. Nubuck is more hard-wearing because the grain is the densest part of the hide; suede is softer and drapes more.
Will green suede fade?
Suede dyed through the fibre holds colour well, but strong direct sunlight over long periods will lift any dye. Store them out of a sunlit window.
Can suede tassel loafers be resoled?
{{VERIFY: answer depends on the construction confirmed above}}
Can I wear these in the rain?
Occasional light rain, treated, yes. As a daily shoe in a wet climate, no — choose a welted calf shoe with a rubber sole instead. We would rather tell you that than replace a pair.
