Men's square toe western boots in neutral ivory, made to your own foot measurements in D, E or F width. Pale leather on a boot is the hardest thing to get right and the easiest to get wrong, so the first section of this page is about how ivory is colored, because that decides everything else.

Dyed through, or coated on top

There are two ways to make a pale boot and they behave completely differently over time.

Dyed through Pigmented or coated
How the color is applied Dye penetrates into the fiber of the hide A pigment film is sprayed onto the surface
Why it is used on pale colors Harder, slower, needs clean hide Cheap, and it hides marks in the hide underneath
What a scuff does Removes surface finish; the color underneath is the same color Removes the film and exposes whatever hide is under it, usually darker
How it ages Softens and develops depth Cracks along flex lines, and the cracks show dark

That table is the whole argument for a dyed pale boot. On a coated one every scuff is a dark mark that cannot be polished out, because you are not looking at damaged color, you are looking at a hole in the paint.

A check you can run: look at the flex crease across the vamp on any pale boot that has been worn. On dyed leather the crease is the same color as the rest, slightly deeper. On a coated hide the crease is a visibly darker line, because the film has thinned and the hide is showing through.

Ivory, and the honest assessment

Ivory is not white. It is an off white carrying warmth, closer to bone or cream, and that warmth is what makes it wearable where a true white would not be.

Where it works: spring and summer, dry conditions, denim and stone chinos, western and smart casual dressing. It is a statement boot and it knows it.

Where it does not: wet weather, winter, anywhere muddy, and any setting where you cannot check what you are stepping in. A pale boot is a commitment, and no amount of protector makes it a rain boot.

The honest framing: this is a second or third pair of western boots, not a first. If you want one pair that handles everything, buy them in a mid brown. If you want the pair people notice, this is it.

Square toe, and what the shape is for

Toe Shape Why it exists
Pointed or J toe Sharply pointed Slides easily into a stirrup, the traditional riding shape
Snip Pointed with the tip squared off Stirrup access with more room at the very front
Round or U toe Full and rounded Comfort, the everyday shape
Square or French toe Squared across the front Lets the toes spread sideways rather than being funnelled to a point

A square toe is the right shape for a broad forefoot, because a pointed toe narrows exactly where a wide foot needs room. It is the most comfortable western shape for most people and the least traditional.

Sizing note: a square toe last is longer through the front than a round one for the same internal length, so the boot looks bigger than it measures. People see that and size down, which is the most common mistake on this shape. The extra length sits in front of your toes, not around them.

Why a size chart cannot fit a pull on boot

A cowboy boot has no laces, no zip and no buckle, because laces are a hazard around a horse. It is held on entirely by tension across your instep and it has to be pulled on over your heel, the widest part of your foot in the direction it travels.

Those two requirements fight each other. The opening has to be generous enough for your heel to pass through; the instep has to be snug enough to grip once the foot is in. On a graded size chart both are scaled from a single length measurement, so a broad foot gets a wider opening and a proportionally wider instep at once. The foot goes in, and then nothing holds it.

Cutting to measurement separates them: the opening is sized to let your heel through, the instep is sized to your actual arch girth, independently.

The four measurements

Measurement Where it is taken What it controls
Width fitting, D, E or F Girth around the ball of the foot Whether the boot pinches across the forefoot
Instep girth Around the highest point of the arch Whether the boot grips or slips at the heel
Opening circumference Around the pull on opening Whether your foot can pass through at all
Calf circumference Around the leg at the top of the shaft Whether the shaft feels tight on the leg

Wide calf is not wide fit. They describe opposite ends of the boot and retail uses the phrases interchangeably. A wider foot fitting will not loosen a tight shaft.

Measure standing, late in the day, both feet, with a soft tape. If your instep girth is larger than your ball girth you have a high instep, which is the single most useful thing to tell a bootmaker and the thing no size chart asks for. Send the numbers through made to order before you buy.

The permanent heel slip nobody warns about

If the opening is slightly too tight, you force the boot on. Leather stretches in girth and does not recover, and the stretch carries from the opening down into the instep because they are the same piece of leather. After a few weeks the boot goes on easily and never grips again.

That is different from normal break in. A quarter to half an inch of heel lift on a new western boot is expected and disappears as the stiff sole begins to flex at the ball. The failure here is slip that gets worse rather than better, and once the instep has stretched no insole or thicker sock fixes it, because those raise the foot rather than tightening the girth.

How these are built

Welted construction with a leather sole and a stacked heel. Stitched shaft, pull straps at the top, leather lining, and a heel counter that holds its shape. Width cut to your measurement in D, E or F. See the rest of the range in men's cowboy boots.

What to wear them with

  • Strongest: mid and dark denim worn over the shaft. The contrast between pale leather and indigo is the whole point.
  • Works: stone, tan and olive chinos, lighter summer cloth.
  • Avoid: black, which makes ivory look gray by comparison; a slim leg forced over the shaft; and anything else pale, which leaves the outfit with no anchor.

Match your belt to a mid brown rather than trying to match the ivory, because two pale leathers that nearly agree look worse than a deliberate contrast.

Care, and this pair needs more of it

  • Protector before the first wear, and reapply regularly. On pale leather this is not optional.
  • Neutral cream only. A colored cream on ivory will not match and cannot be lifted back out. Neutral feeds the leather without adding pigment.
  • Clean marks early. Dirt that sits on pale leather works into the grain and becomes permanent. Wipe the boots down after every wear rather than once a month.
  • Keep polish out of the stitching, where it dries pale on light leather and reads as chalk along every seam.
  • Condition the shaft as well as the vamp. The shaft dries out unnoticed and a dry shaft cracks at the ankle fold.
  • Boot trees or stuff the shaft, so it does not fold permanently.

Dry naturally away from heat if they get wet. Heat is what ruins wet leather, not water.

What to expect when you order

Every pair is cut to your measurements after you order. Pale leather shows natural variation between hides more than a dark color does, so your pair will be close to the photographs rather than identical to them.

Questions we get asked

Is the ivory dyed or painted on?
Dyed through, which is the harder and slower way and needs clean hide. A pigmented or coated pale boot has a pigment film sprayed on the surface, which is cheap and hides marks in the hide underneath.

Why does dyed versus coated matter on a pale boot?
Because of what happens when you scuff it. On dyed leather a scuff removes surface finish and the color underneath is the same color. On a coated boot the scuff removes the film and exposes the hide under it, usually darker, and it cannot be polished out.

How can I tell dyed leather from coated?
Look at the flex crease across the vamp on a pale boot that has been worn. On dyed leather the crease is the same color as the rest, slightly deeper. On a coated hide the crease is a visibly darker line, because the film has thinned and the hide is showing through.

Are ivory boots practical?
Not as a first pair. They work in spring and summer, dry conditions, with denim and stone chinos. They do not work in wet weather, winter or anywhere muddy, and no amount of protector makes a pale boot a rain boot. If you want one pair that handles everything, buy mid brown.

What is a square toe for?
It lets the toes spread sideways rather than being funnelled to a point, which makes it the right shape for a broad forefoot. It is the most comfortable western shape for most people and the least traditional.

Should I size down because the square toe looks long?
No. A square toe last is longer through the front than a round one for the same internal length, so the boot looks bigger than it measures. The extra length sits in front of your toes, not around them.

Why do wide fit western boots still slip at the heel?
Because a size chart scales the opening and the instep together from one length measurement. A broad foot gets a wider opening and a proportionally wider instep at once, so the foot goes in and nothing holds it.

What is the difference between wide fit and wide calf?
Opposite ends of the boot. Wide fit is girth around the ball of the foot. Wide calf is circumference around the leg at the top of the shaft. A wider foot fitting will not loosen a tight shaft.

What causes permanent heel slip?
Forcing the boot on when the opening is slightly too tight. Leather stretches in girth without recovering and the stretch carries down into the instep, because they are the same piece of leather. After a few weeks the boot goes on easily and never grips again.

What cream should I use on ivory?
Neutral only. A colored cream on ivory will not match and cannot be lifted back out. Neutral feeds the leather without adding pigment.

How often should I clean pale boots?
After every wear, not once a month. Dirt that sits on pale leather works into the grain and becomes permanent, so wiping them down early is the difference between a boot that stays ivory and one that goes gray.
