The difference between a derby and an oxford is one construction decision with large consequences.

On a derby the facings that carry the eyelets are stitched on top of the vamp. They are separate flaps, free to open as wide as your foot needs and to close down as far as the laces pull them.

On an oxford those facings are stitched underneath the vamp. They meet in a narrow V and cannot spread past what the pattern allows.

So a derby is the most forgiving lace up there is. If you have a high instep, a wide forefoot, or one foot noticeably larger than the other, this pattern absorbs a range that an oxford simply cannot, and no amount of breaking in gives an oxford that range.

What you give up is a step of formality. Open lacing reads less formal than closed, which puts a derby in business casual and smart casual rather than at the top of a dress code.

Why a patina works differently on a derby

This is specific to the pattern and it is the reason a colored derby often looks better than a colored oxford.

On an oxford the facings are stitched under the vamp, so the top of the shoe is one continuous surface broken only by a narrow V. A gradation runs across it cleanly but it has nothing to play against.

A derby has two separate facing flaps sitting proud of the vamp. They are distinct pieces of leather at a slightly different angle, so they catch light differently from the vamp underneath, and a hand applied color grades across them as its own step. What you get is a shoe with three visible depths at the throat rather than one: the vamp, and each facing sitting over it.

A spray cannot do that, because a spray treats the whole top of the shoe as one surface. Hand work treats each facing as its own piece. It is the clearest tell on a colored derby: look at whether the facings carry a slightly different depth from the vamp beneath them. If everything matches exactly, nobody painted it by hand.

Applied patina and earned patina

• Earned patina is what happens to good leather over years: the toe and heel darken from polishing, the flex creases hold shadow, the color deepens unevenly according to how you walk. Nobody applies it.
• Applied patina is hand layered dye built on crust leather, hide that has been tanned but not dyed, before the shoe is finished. It is made deliberately to imitate what twenty years of the above would have done.

The two are compatible. An applied patina on full grain calf keeps developing after you buy it, so the shoe you own at five years is not the shoe in the photographs. That is intended behavior.

The finish also tells you what the leather is. Hand painted patina only works on unfinished crust calf that still accepts dye through the grain. On pigmented or corrected grain leather the dye sits on a coating and wipes off, so a shoe that genuinely takes a layered patina cannot be corrected grain. Olive, and why it behaves where other greens do not

Green is the color most men never consider, and olive is the version that works.

The reason is temperature. A green mixed toward blue is cool, and a cool green fights every warm thing in a normal wardrobe: brown tailoring, tan chinos, any brown leather. Olive is green pulled toward yellow and brown, so it sits in the same temperature family as the clothes most people already own. From a distance it reads closer to a warm dark brown than to a color.

Depth still decides it. The test: if you can name the green from ten feet away, it is too bright for a dress shoe. Olive passes that test where grass or emerald does not.

Olive also polishes unusually. Brown lightens and warms at the toe with wax, drifting toward tan. Olive deepens instead, because the wax darkens the yellow in it, so an olive shoe at three years is richer than it was new.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly without disturbing the painted leather above it. On a hand colored shoe that is the whole point, because the patina is most of the cost and it survives every resole.

Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.

Because the lacing handles the instep, the two measurements that decide a derby are length and ball girth. Get those right and the lacing does the rest, which is why this is the easiest dress pattern to fit.

Do not size up to gain room across the ball. That makes the shoe long, and a long shoe lets your foot slide forward on a decline. Order your true length and specify the width separately. What to wear them with

• Strongest: brown and tan tailoring, tweed, moleskin and corduroy. Olive belongs with earth tones.
• Works: mid and charcoal gray, stone and tan chinos, dark denim.
• Avoid: navy, which is cool and sits too close in depth so both go muddy, and black, which flattens the olive entirely.

Neutral cream only. Pigmented polish over hand layered color flattens every gradation permanently, and a brown cream on olive pulls it toward a flat khaki over a year in a shift that does not reverse.

On a derby the place cream collects is the channel where each facing sits on the vamp. It dries pale there and outlines both facings in a lighter tone, which undoes exactly the layered depth the pattern gives you. Use cream sparingly, then brush along each facing edge with a horsehair brush before it sets, working along the edge rather than across it.

Keep wax to the toe and heel counter, the two areas that do not flex. Keep the shoes out of direct sunlight, which fades any patina. Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, dry naturally away from heat.
