Men's Purple Suede Oxford Shoes
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Men's purple suede oxford shoes in calf suede, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Purple is the color people ask about most and regret least, and suede is the material that makes it work rather than making it loud.
Why suede is what makes purple wearable
The same purple in smooth calf and in suede are two different shoes, and the reason is physics rather than taste.
Smooth calf reflects light off a flat surface, so a strong color returns at full saturation and reads as a block of purple. Suede is napped: thousands of short fibers standing up, each catching light at its tip and holding shadow at its base. That breaks the color into highlight and shadow across the whole surface, so what your eye receives is a range of tones rather than one.
The practical result is that in low light a purple suede oxford reads almost black, and in daylight it declares itself. That gap between the two is what separates a color you can wear to work from one you can only wear to a party.
"Is purple actually wearable?"
Honest answer: yes, within limits, and the limits are about depth and about what you put above it.
- Depth decides everything. A deep purple close to aubergine behaves like a neutral. A mid or bright purple reads as costume and nothing rescues it. The test: if you can name the color from across a room, it is too bright for a business shoe.
- Charcoal and mid gray are the strongest pairing. Gray is neutral enough to let the purple be the only color in play.
- Navy fights it. Both are cool and close in depth, so the two go muddy together.
- Brown is worse. Warm against cool with no separation in depth.
- One purple item only. No purple tie, no purple pocket square. One is deliberate, two is a theme.
Where it genuinely does not work is a conservative dress code that expects black lace ups. That is not a judgment about the shoe, it is a fact about the room.
Suede, nubuck and split suede: the difference that decides the price
These three get sold interchangeably and only one belongs on a dress shoe.
| Material | Which part of the hide | How it behaves |
|---|---|---|
| Suede | Flesh side of a full thickness hide, buffed to a nap | Short dense nap, holds its texture, takes dye evenly |
| Nubuck | Grain side, the outer surface, lightly sanded | Finer nap, denser and harder wearing, the tight outer fibers remain |
| Split suede | The leftover layer after the grain has been taken off for something else | Loose, sheds, goes shiny at the flex points within a season |
Split suede is the one sold as "suede" at a third of the price, and on a colored shoe it fails twice over: it goes shiny where the shoe flexes, and it takes dye unevenly, so the color blotches as it wears.
The test you can do in hand: press your thumb across the surface. Real suede and nubuck take a directional mark and recover when you brush them back. Split suede either does not mark at all or marks and stays marked.
Oxford or derby, and why it matters for your foot
An oxford has closed lacing: the facings carrying the eyelets are stitched underneath the vamp, so they meet in a narrow V and cannot spread wider than the shoe allows. A derby has open lacing, with the facings on top of the vamp, free to open.
Closed lacing is what makes an oxford the dressier shoe, because it gives a clean unbroken line across the top. It also makes it the fussier fit: an oxford fits the instep it was lasted for and cannot open up for a high one.
So if you have a high instep, a made to order oxford is worth considerably more to you than an off the shelf pair, because the fit has to be right from the start rather than corrected later.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly without disturbing the suede above it. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.
Calf suede upper, closed oxford lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's leather oxford shoes.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.
Because this is an oxford, instep height decides the fit. When laced, the facings should sit close but not touching, with a narrow even gap. Wide apart means the shoe is too small across the instep and there is no correcting it afterwards; touching means it is too big and will keep loosening.
Suede also gives slightly more than smooth calf over the first few wears, because the fibers are looser, so err firm rather than roomy. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you have a high instep or are between widths.
Care, and why suede rules are the opposite of calf rules
Everything you know about polishing a leather shoe is wrong here.
- No cream, no wax, ever. Both fill the nap, flatten it and leave a shiny patch that does not come back. On a colored suede the patch also reads darker than the surrounding leather, so it is doubly visible.
- Brush after every wear with a crepe or rubber suede brush, working in one direction so the nap lies consistently. Brushing back and forth mats it.
- Protector spray before the first wear and every couple of months after. This is the single most useful thing you can do for a suede shoe and it matters more on a color than on a neutral, because a water mark on purple is more visible than on brown.
- Suede eraser for marks brushing will not lift, used gently.
- If soaked: stuff with paper, dry naturally away from heat, and brush the nap back up only once completely dry. Brushing wet suede mats it permanently.
Cedar trees between wearings and a day of rest between wears, same as any leather shoe.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Suede takes dye slightly differently hide to hide, so the depth on your pair will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping. Other colors in the same material go through made to order.
Questions we get asked
Is purple actually wearable for men?
Yes, if it is deep. A purple close to aubergine behaves like a neutral, reading almost black in low light and showing its color in daylight. A mid or bright purple reads as costume. The test: if you can name the color from across a room, it is too bright for a business shoe.
Why does purple work better in suede than in smooth calf?
Because suede is napped. Thousands of short fibers each catch light at the tip and hold shadow at the base, so the color arrives as a range of tones rather than one flat block. Smooth calf returns the color at full saturation and reads as a block of purple.
What should I wear purple shoes with?
Charcoal and mid gray are strongest, because gray lets the purple be the only color in play. Avoid navy, which is cool and close in depth so the two go muddy, and brown, which is warm against cool with no separation. And keep it to one purple item in the outfit.
What is the difference between suede, nubuck and split suede?
Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, buffed to a nap. Nubuck is the grain side lightly sanded, so it is finer and harder wearing because the tight outer fibers remain. Split suede is the leftover layer after the grain has been taken off, and it goes loose and shiny at the flex points within a season.
How do I tell real suede from split suede?
Press your thumb across the surface. Real suede and nubuck take a directional mark and recover when brushed back. Split suede either does not mark at all or marks and stays marked.
Why does split suede matter more on a colored shoe?
Because it fails twice. It goes shiny where the shoe flexes, and it takes dye unevenly, so the color blotches as it wears.
What is the difference between an oxford and a derby?
Closed versus open lacing. An oxford has the eyelet facings stitched underneath the vamp so they meet in a narrow V and cannot spread. A derby has them on top, free to open. The oxford is dressier and the fussier fit.
Can I wear these if I have a high instep?
Yes, but made to order matters more to you than to most people. An oxford fits the instep it was lasted for and cannot open up for a high one, so the fit has to be right from the start rather than corrected later.
Can I polish suede?
No. Cream and wax fill the nap, flatten it and leave a shiny patch that does not come back, and on a colored suede that patch also reads darker than the leather around it. Brush with a crepe or rubber suede brush in one direction instead.
What happens if they get soaked?
Stuff them with paper, dry naturally away from heat, and brush the nap back up only once they are completely dry. Brushing wet suede mats it permanently.
Do I need a protector spray?
Yes, before the first wear and every couple of months after. It is the single most useful thing you can do for a suede shoe, and it matters more on a color, because a water mark on purple is far more visible than on brown.
