Whimsical Walk
Black Crocodile Nubuck Loafers for Men
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Most people buying crocodile want the shine — the glassy tiles, the depth, the way light moves across the scales when you walk. These do not have it and never will. The polished surface has been buffed off deliberately, and no amount of polish brings it back.
What you get instead is the scale pattern read as relief and shadow rather than reflection. Matte, close to the hand, and considerably quieter than glazed crocodile. If the shine is what you came for, buy a glazed pair instead — we would rather tell you now. If you have always liked crocodile but found it too loud to actually wear, this is the version that solves that.

What a nubuck finish does to crocodile
Nubuck is made by sanding the outer grain side of a hide to raise a fine, short nap. On calf that is routine. On crocodile it is unusual, because the layer being removed is the polished epidermis of the scales — the part that produces the glaze, and normally the entire reason people buy the skin.
The skins are tanned matte, with no wax and no topcoat, then buffed. The scale structure survives. The shine does not. Run a hand across the surface one way and then the other and the contrast shifts, the way it does on any napped leather — that reversal is the signature of a genuinely buffed hide rather than a matte coating sprayed over a glazed one.
Tanneries call this a naked finish, and the phrase is literal: there is no protective layer between the leather and the world. It is what gives the material its character, and it is also the one thing you need to plan for. See the care section below before you order.
Nubuck is not suede
The two get used interchangeably and they are different materials. Nubuck is sanded on the grain side — the outer surface of the hide, where the fibres are densest and strongest. Suede is worked from the flesh side, the softer inner layer left after a hide is split.
Both end up velvety. Nubuck is tougher, holds its nap longer, and costs more, because you are sacrificing the most valuable surface of the hide to make it. On an exotic skin that difference is magnified: buffing a crocodile is a deliberate decision to give up the finish the skin is prized for.
Species, cut and hide width
Three specifications separate one exotic boot from another, and almost no retailer publishes any of them. Ask us for all three before you order, and ask the same of anyone else you are considering.
Species. Crocodile, alligator and caiman are different animals with different scale patterns, different prices and different legal positions. Caiman is the least expensive and carries bony deposits inside the scales that make it stiffer underfoot.
Cut. Belly gives the even, rectangular tiles most people picture when they think of crocodile. Hornback comes from the back and carries the raised ridge — more dramatic, less formal, usually cheaper per skin because the pattern is harder to lay out across a pattern piece.
Hide width. Exotic skins are graded by measuring across the widest point of the belly in centimetres, and width drives price much as carat drives diamonds. A wider hide yields larger, more even tiles across the vamp, which is why two boots in the same species can differ substantially in cost.
Ask us for the species, the cut and the centimetre width on this pair. A seller who cannot give you all three is describing a photograph, not a hide.

Exotic western boots in this species routinely run four figures and upward. We sit below that field, and the reason is straightforward: we make to order rather than carrying stock. If you want the same skin as a belt, see men's leather belts.
Goodyear welted, and why it matters more on an exotic
A Goodyear welt stitches the upper to a rib on the insole and then stitches a leather welt to the outsole, so the sole can be removed and replaced repeatedly without disturbing the upper.
On an exotic boot that matters more than on any calf shoe, because here the upper is the expensive part. A crocodile vamp will outlast several soles. On a cemented boot the hide gets scrapped along with the sole the first time it wears through — an expensive way to discard a skin that took years to grow. The welt is what turns this from a purchase into something you keep.
Caring for a naked finish
The failure to plan for is water spotting, and on an unprotected nubuck it is permanent. One rain, one spilled drink, one damp pavement, and the nap darkens in a patch with a hard tide line at its edge. A glazed crocodile sheds all of that because the topcoat does the work. Here there is no topcoat — which is the character of the material and also its only real weakness.
Three things prevent nearly all of it. Apply a nubuck protector spray before the first wear, not after the first mark, and repeat it every few months. Brush with a crepe or brass nubuck brush, always in one direction, to lift the nap rather than flatten it. And never use wax, cream or polish of any kind — it will mat the nap permanently and there is no way back.
Treated that way the finish lasts indefinitely, and the scale relief actually sharpens as the nap settles.
The test to run before you buy
Run your palm firmly across the surface, then back the other way. A genuine buffed nubuck changes contrast between the two directions — the nap lies down one way and stands the other, and the colour visibly shifts. A matte lacquer sprayed over glazed crocodile does not move at all.
Second check: catch a fingernail gently against a scale edge. On a genuine hide the tiles are discrete pieces with real edges you can feel. On an embossed imitation the surface is continuous and the pattern is pressed into it.
Ask us for a photograph of the vamp with light raking across it from the side, and one taken after a hand has been drawn across the nap. Neither shot appears in catalogue photography, because front lighting flattens nap and hides both answers.
When to buy something else instead
Three honest cases. If you want crocodile that gleams, buy glazed — this finish cannot be converted and you will be disappointed. If you want the pattern for a fraction of the money and do not mind that it is printed, a croc-embossed calf boot costs a tenth of this and looks convincing in photographs. And if you need boots you can wear in bad weather without thinking, buy something with a topcoat; a naked finish asks for a little planning.
Buy these if you want genuine crocodile you can actually wear without the shoe announcing itself, on a welt you can renew repeatedly.
Where these can and cannot be shipped
Crocodile cannot be sold or shipped to California. California Penal Code 653o prohibits the import for commercial purposes and the sale of crocodile and alligator products in the state, and it applies to online orders placed by California residents. This is not our policy — every seller of genuine exotic footwear operates under it.
Other jurisdictions apply their own rules, and exotic hides crossing borders travel under permits. Before ordering from outside our home market, check with us that we can lawfully deliver to your address. We would rather decline an order than have it stopped in transit.
Fit, width and sizing
Crocodile has far less give than calf. The scales are discrete plates over a supporting layer, so the upper does not stretch and mould to your foot the way a calf boot does over the first month — what you order is close to what you keep. That makes getting the fit right at order more important here than on anything else we make.
Measure against the size guide, then send your measurements before ordering. Width is listed as standard and can be customised on request; tell us the joint girth and we will tell you honestly whether it changes anything for your foot.
Made to order
Made to order rather than held in stock. See shipping and returns before you order, and note the California restriction above. The rest of the exotic range sits in men's exotic shoes, and other western styles in men's custom cowboy boots.
Questions buyers ask about nubuck crocodile
What is nubuck crocodile?
Crocodile hide tanned matte with no wax or topcoat, then buffed to remove the polished top layer of the scales. The result keeps the scale structure but loses the glaze, giving a velvety, matte surface with the pattern reading as relief rather than reflection.
Can you polish nubuck crocodile boots?
No. Wax and cream flatten the nap and mat it permanently, and there is no way to recover it. Nubuck is maintained by brushing in one direction with a crepe or brass brush, plus a protector spray applied before first wear and topped up every few months.
What is the difference between nubuck and suede?
The side of the hide they come from. Nubuck is sanded on the outer grain side, where the fibres are densest, so it is tougher and holds its nap longer. Suede is worked from the softer inner layer left after a hide is split. Nubuck costs more and wears better.
How can you tell genuine crocodile from embossed leather?
Two checks. Run a hand across a nubuck finish and back again — a genuine buffed hide shifts contrast between directions while a coating does not. And catch a fingernail against a scale edge: real tiles are discrete pieces with edges, while an embossed surface is continuous with the pattern pressed in.
Can crocodile boots be shipped to California?
No. California Penal Code 653o prohibits the sale and import for commercial purposes of crocodile and alligator products in the state, including online orders to California addresses. It has applied to crocodile and alligator since 2020 and to caiman since 2022, and it binds every seller equally.
Is crocodile or alligator better for boots?
Neither is better, they are different. Alligator tiles tend to be more uniform and rounded, crocodile shows more variation and a small sensory pit on each scale. Caiman is cheaper and stiffer because of bony deposits within the scales. Price follows hide width more than species.
