Two traditions on one shoe

A monk strap descends from a closed shoe fastened with a buckle rather than laces, and the buckle is functional: it sets the tension across your instep.

A tassel is a loafer detail with a documented origin. The actor Paul Lukas bought European oxfords finished with small leather laces and wanted something similar made in America. Farkas and Kovacs in New York produced a lace up he was not satisfied with in 1948, and Alden rebuilt it on a penny loafer base, removing the laces entirely and putting decorative tassels around the opening instead. It launched in 1950 and was adopted immediately by Ivy League students.

So on this shoe the buckle does the work the tassels used to do on a loafer, and the tassels become pure ornament. That is worth knowing because it changes what you should check.

What to check, and why it is different here

On a tassel loafer the tassels sit on a functional cord that runs through the throat and holds the shoe. On a monk strap the buckle already does that, so the tassels have no structural job.

That means two things:

• The tassels take more visual weight and less mechanical load. They are unlikely to fail from tension, but they are exposed, and a tassel that catches on a pant hem or the other shoe will pull.
• They should still be attached properly. A cord that runs through punched holes can be replaced by a cobbler. A blob glued to the side cannot, and when the adhesive lets go there is nothing to reattach it to. Lift a tassel: if it moves freely on a real cord, the construction is right.

And on the buckle side, the same four checks apply as on any monk strap: the strap stitched through the quarter rather than tacked, a proper keeper loop, a rolling buckle bar rather than a fixed one, and finished rather than raw punch holes.

How formal is this shoe, honestly

Two decorative elements on one shoe put it lower on the scale than either would alone.

The rule behind that ordering is simple: every visible decorative element takes a shoe one step down. A buckle is one. Tassels are another. Black pulls the shoe back up, which is why this combination works in black and would look like too much in tan.

Black, and what it demands

Black absorbs almost all the light that hits it, so a black shoe reads as a silhouette rather than a surface. That has two consequences here.

First, the lasting has to be clean, because every ripple shows in the outline with no grain or color depth to hide behind.

Second, the tassels become the only thing on the shoe with a visible edge and a moving shadow. On a brown shoe they are one detail among several tones. On black they are the detail. Full grain, top grain, genuine leather

• Full grain keeps the complete outer surface of the hide with nothing sanded off, so the tightest fibers are still at the surface. It patinas rather than wearing through and it takes a mirror shine on the toe.
• Top grain has been sanded to remove scars then coated or embossed. Flawless on a shelf, cracked at the flex line within a couple of years.
• Genuine leather is the lowest grade sold despite the name.

On a black shoe this decides whether you can build a shine at all. A mirror finish is thin layers of wax sitting on a tight intact grain. On coated leather the finish is already the surface and wax never bonds to it, which is why cheap black shoes look plastic however long you polish them.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.

The buckle gives you real adjustment across the instep, which makes a monk far more forgiving than a lace up if your instep is high or low. If oxfords have never fitted you properly, this is the pattern to try.

What the buckle cannot fix is length or ball girth. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball, which only makes the shoe long. What to wear them with

• Strongest: charcoal and mid gray worsted or flannel.
• Works: navy, black tailoring, dark denim, gray chinos.
• Avoid: brown or tan tailoring, which fights black at every depth, and a formal dress code that expects a plain black oxford.

Care

Cream first, then wax on the toe and heel counter, the two areas that do not flex.

• Keep wax off the strap and off the tassel cord. Both flex under tension and wax on flexing leather cracks and flakes. A dry cord also snaps where it passes through the holes, so feed it with light cream.
• Clear the channel where the strap crosses the quarter, and the base of each tassel, before cream sets. Product left there dries pale and outlines the detail in a lighter tone, which against black is the first thing anyone sees.
• Brush along seams, never across them.
