Wingtip, brogue and oxford are not three kinds of shoe. They describe three different parts of the same shoe, and any pair you own has an answer to all three at once. Once you see them as separate axes, every question in this area answers itself.

The three axes

Axis What it describes Your options
Lacing How the laces attach to the shoe Oxford, derby, or no lacing at all
Toe pattern The shape of the seams on the front of the shoe Wholecut, plain toe, cap toe, wingtip, longwing, split toe
Perforation Whether holes are punched through the leather None, quarter brogue, semi brogue, full brogue

Every dress shoe is one option from each column. A "wingtip oxford" is not a contradiction and not a single thing — it is a wingtip toe pattern on an oxford lacing, and it still has a third answer you have not been told yet.

Axis one: the lacing

Look at where the laces sit. On an oxford, the panels holding the eyelets are stitched underneath the front of the shoe, so the lacing closes into a V and the shoe presents one continuous surface. On a derby, those panels sit on top, stitched over the front, and you can see them as separate flaps.

American usage sometimes calls the oxford a balmoral and the derby a blucher. Same two shoes, different names.

Closed lacing is dressier, because the unbroken surface reads as sleeker. Open lacing adjusts further, which matters if you have a high instep or a thick foot — the flaps simply open wider. If you have never been able to get a comfortable oxford, the answer may be that you have been buying the wrong axis. Compare the oxfords against the derbies with that in mind.

Axis two: the toe pattern

This is the seams on the front of the shoe, and it has nothing to do with lacing.

  • Wholecut — the entire upper cut from one piece of leather, no seams at all. The dressiest and the hardest to make, because a single flaw in the hide ruins the whole shoe.
  • Plain toe — seams elsewhere, but no cap across the front.
  • Cap toe — a straight seam running across the toe. The default business shoe.
  • Wingtip — the cap comes to a point at the centre and sweeps back along both sides, forming a shallow W.
  • Longwing — the same wing, continued all the way back to meet at a seam on the heel.
  • Split toe — a seam running down the centre of the front, sometimes with a raised apron either side.

Formality runs roughly in that order, wholecut dressiest and longwing most casual. The wingtip collection and the plain toe and wholecut collection sit at opposite ends of it.

Axis three: the perforation

Broguing is decorative punching through the leather. The holes go all the way through to the lining, and they are entirely independent of the toe pattern.

Type Perforation
None No holes anywhere
Quarter brogue Along the cap seam only, no medallion
Semi brogue Cap seam plus a medallion on the toe
Full brogue Wing seam, medallion, and along the wing edges

A wingtip with no perforation exists and has a name: blind brogue, also called an austerity brogue after the wartime restriction on decorative work. It is one of the most useful shoes there is, because you get the wing shape without the country signal. See the brogue collection for the perforation across different toe patterns.

So what exactly is a "wingtip oxford"?

Two of three axes specified. Wingtip toe pattern, oxford lacing, perforation unstated — and it could be any of the four.

This is why the term causes trouble. A brogued wingtip oxford in tan is a country shoe. A blind brogue wingtip oxford in black is close to a business shoe. Same two words describe both, and the difference between them is the axis nobody mentioned.

When you are buying, get an answer on all three. If a listing says only "wingtip oxford," look at the photograph and count the holes.

Why the confusion persists

Because the most common shoe in this family answers two axes at once. A full brogue is, by definition, a wingtip — the perforation pattern includes the wing edges, so you cannot have a full brogue that is not also a wingtip.

People meet that shoe first, learn both words from it simultaneously, and reasonably conclude they mean the same thing. They do not. The wing exists without holes, and holes exist without a wing — a quarter brogue is punched along a perfectly straight cap seam.

The trade does not help. Retailers use "brogue" as a synonym for wingtip constantly, and in British usage "brogues" often just means the whole category of decorated country shoes. Neither usage is wrong socially. Both are wrong technically, and if you are spending real money the technical version is the one that tells you what you are buying.
