What crocodile leather is, and the check that settles it

The repeat test. A real hide never repeats. Embossing comes off a plate, so the pattern cycles — find the same tile arrangement twice on one shoe and it was pressed in. This works on any product photograph.

Caiman is worth knowing about because it is routinely sold as crocodile and it is a worse shoe. Caiman belly tiles contain osteoderms — bone within the scale — which makes the hide rigid, and rigid hide on a loafer that flexes with no lacing to distribute the load cracks at the fold. Press the toe: crocodile gives, caiman resists.

Why burgundy suits crocodile better than it suits calf

Burgundy is a deep red with a brown base — darker and redder than chestnut, warmer than chocolate, less purple than oxblood. On smooth calf it is a good colour and a slightly difficult one, because a flat surface gives you one uninterrupted plane of red and it can read heavy.

Crocodile solves that without any hand work at all. The surface is not flat — dye sits at one depth in the channels between tiles and at another across the raised crowns, so a single burgundy comes back as a range. Deep, almost black-red in the recesses. Lighter and warmer on the tile faces. The tone shifts as you move.

The effect is that this reads as a dark shoe from across a room and as an unmistakably red one at conversational distance. Burgundy needs that, more than most colours, because flat burgundy at volume can look like a costume choice. Tile structure gives it depth the colour cannot supply on its own.

One terminology note, since it comes up constantly with this shade. Cordovan is used both as a name for roughly this colour and as the name of a specific horse leather. These are crocodile. If shell cordovan is what you want, a seller who has it will name the tannery, because it is the most valuable thing they can tell you.

Crocodile on a loafer: the one real drawback

Worth saying before the rest, because it is the honest limit of this shoe.

A loafer holds your foot with the topline and the heel counter alone — there is no lacing. On a calf loafer the upper gives a little across the ball over the first weeks and the fit improves. Crocodile does not stretch. The tile structure has almost no give in it, so whatever shape this shoe is on day one is the shape it stays.

That cuts both ways. It means the shoe will not bag out or lose its line the way a calf loafer eventually does — a crocodile loafer holds its shape for decades. It also means there is no accommodation for a fit error, and the fit error you will notice is length rather than width, because a loafer that is slightly too long slips at the heel and nothing fixes it.

So this is a shoe to order carefully rather than optimistically. More on that below.

What a penny loafer is, and what to check

A penny loafer is a slip-on with a strap — the saddle — running across the vamp, with a small slot cut into the middle of it. The slot is where students in the 1930s and 40s kept a coin.

Three details separate a well-made one from the rest, and on crocodile two of them are harder than usual.

The saddle. It should be a separate piece of leather stitched down at both ends, not glued or tacked. Both ends take tension every time you put the shoe on. On crocodile there is an additional problem: the saddle has to be cut so the tile pattern runs sensibly against the vamp behind it, rather than clashing with it. A carelessly cut saddle on an exotic reads as a mistake in a way it never does on calf.

The slot edges. These should be finished and turned. On crocodile a raw cut edge exposes the cut ends of tiles, which can chip — so the slot on an exotic loafer needs binding rather than just trimming.

The beef rolls. The raised stitched swellings where the saddle meets the sides. Genuine rolls of leather on a good shoe; a pressed decorative seam on a cheap one.

What goes wrong

Colour wears from the tile crowns. Every tile stands slightly proud, so the crown takes contact first — the other shoe, a trouser hem, a chair leg. Pigment goes there before anywhere else, and the shoe develops a pale outline around each tile. On burgundy this shows as the red lightening toward pink at the high points while the channels stay deep.

Tile edges lift if the hide dries. The interstitial skin between tiles is thinner than the tiles, and it takes the fold at the flex crease. If it dries out, a tile edge at the toe begins to curl away at the corner, and once lifted it does not lie back down. This is the failure that ends a crocodile shoe and it is entirely preventable.

Burgundy crocks. Deep reds transfer more than most dyes, and the lining sits against your sock. Expect transfer onto light socks for the first month. It settles down. Dark socks until it does.

The topline stretches — slowly. Less than on calf, because the hide does not give, but the lining and the counter still take the strain of your heel going past. Use a shoehorn. On a loafer it is the single most useful thing you can own, and on an exotic loafer more so, because you cannot ease a stretched topline back.

Care: not what you would do to a calf shoe

Exotic leather conditioner, applied sparingly and often, worked into the channels between tiles rather than across the crowns. Fingers rather than a brush, so it reaches around the tiles instead of over them.

Not shoe cream. Cream sits on top of a textured hide, fills the channels, dries pale, and makes the shoe chalky while doing nothing for the skin. Never a coloured polish — a burgundy cream on burgundy crocodile is close to impossible to match and it collects in every channel.

Cedar trees between wears, and a day off between outings. Water will not destroy crocodile but it draws oils out of the thin skin between tiles, which is exactly what causes lifting. If they get wet, dry away from heat and condition afterwards.

And keep them out of sunlight. Burgundy drifts toward rust rather than simply fading, unevenly, following wherever the light fell.

Church, Easter, weddings, Derby day, evening events, steppin' and social club functions. Occasion footwear in a tradition that has never treated colour or texture on a shoe as a risk, and burgundy crocodile is close to the centre of it.

Charcoal and mid-grey flannel are the strongest partners — plain cool cloth beside a busy warm surface. Navy works. Cream and stone linen work in daylight and push the whole outfit lighter.

Not brown trousers — too close to the shoe, reads as a failed match. Not black, against which burgundy goes muddy. Keep the trouser plain; the hide is the pattern.

And not a first, second or third pair. Buy a black cap toe oxford, then a dark brown or navy, then a plain calf loafer if you like the shape. This comes after that, and it is meant to.

Sizing: made to order, and stricter than anything else here

A loafer has no lacing to adjust — it either fits or it does not. And crocodile does not stretch, so there is no break-in of the upper at all. Length and ball girth both have to be right, and neither can be traded against the other.

Do not size up in length to buy width. Too long and it slips at the heel permanently; too narrow and it loads the tile edges across the ball every step until they crack.

Hand welted: the welt is sewn to a holdfast cut into a solid leather insole, with nothing cemented, so resoling happens below the welt without the upper being touched.

On this shoe that is close to the whole purchase. A Blake stitch runs the sole stitch through the insole and the upper, which on crocodile means putting a needle through the hide — and every resole reuses or remakes those holes in a skin worth more than the sole. A cemented shoe cannot be resoled at all. Most loafers are one or the other, because a loafer is treated as a light shoe. Pairing the most expensive hide in the catalogue with a construction that cannot be serviced would be the wrong way round.
