Burgundy boots in full grain calf with a zip closure, hand welted, made to order in your US size and width. A zip is the one component on a boot that is not leather, and it is where a zip boot fails. That is most of what this page is about.

Where the zip sits, and why it matters

Zip boots come in three configurations and they are genuinely different boots. This is the first thing to establish, because photographs often do not make it clear.

Placement How it works What you get
Side zip Zip on the inside or outside quarter, usually with lacing kept as decoration Fast on and off. The lacing never needs adjusting. Cleanest line.
Front zip Zip replaces the lacing entirely down the throat The sleekest look. No adjustment across the instep at all.
Rear zip Zip up the back seam Uninterrupted front. Rare on welted boots.

{{VERIFY: state which placement this boot uses. This is the primary product fact and three separate search queries exist for the three variants.}}

The practical difference is adjustment. A laced boot adjusts across the instep every time you put it on, and it keeps adjusting as your foot changes over years. A front zip gives you none — the opening is a fixed dimension. A side zip with functional lacing gives you the best of both: you set the lacing once to your foot and then use the zip daily, so the boot adjusts but you never have to.

If you have a high instep or a thick foot, side zip with real lacing is the configuration to want.

The zip is a seam, and seams need reinforcing

Here is the thing about zip boots that nobody selling one tells you.

To fit a zip you cut the upper open and sew a tape into it. That means introducing a straight vertical seam into a panel that was previously continuous, and running a metal or plastic mechanism down it. The leather either side of that seam now has to do two jobs — hold the boot's shape, and hold the zip tape without pulling away from it.

Three things determine whether it lasts.

The tape has to be sewn to reinforced leather, not raw edge. A properly made zip boot has a strip of reinforcing tape or a leather facing behind the zip line, so the stitching passes through two layers. Without it, the stitch holes are the weakest line on the boot and the leather begins to tear between them — usually starting at the top of the zip, where the pull force is highest.

The zip has to be the right gauge. A zip sized for a jacket will not survive a boot. Boot zips take shear load — your foot pushing outward against the closed teeth — not just the tension a garment zip sees.

Both ends need stops. The top and bottom of the zip run are where the mechanism meets the leather, and an unsecured end works loose in both directions.

{{VERIFY: confirm the zip is backed by reinforcing tape or a leather facing, and name the zip brand and gauge if you can. This is the single most valuable spec you can publish on a zip boot and no competitor does it.}}

On a hand welted boot the upper is held to a solid leather insole with a holdfast cut into it, so the flex and closing loads pass into leather rather than into a cemented canvas rib. That matters here because a zip line is already the weakest vertical on the boot; adding a glue line underneath it would be two compromises in the same panel.

What goes wrong with a zip boot

The zip, and nothing else, in almost every case. The leather will outlast it.

Teeth misalign under load. If the boot is too tight across the instep or the ball, your foot pushes outward against the closed zip all day. Teeth separate under shear before they wear out from use, and once a zip has been forced open under load it never seats reliably again.

The pull tab goes. It is the smallest metal part on the boot and it takes the most repeated force. On a good boot it can be replaced by a cobbler in minutes. On a boot where the tab is integral to a sealed slider, it cannot.

Grit in the teeth. A zip sits low on the boot and collects the same dirt the welt does. Grit between teeth is the most common cause of a zip failing to run smoothly, and it is preventable — brush along the zip line when you brush the boot, and run a graphite pencil or zip lubricant down the teeth twice a year. Never oil or leather conditioner, which attracts more grit.

Cream builds along the zip tape. The tape is fabric, not leather, and it does not absorb cream — so cream sits on it, dries pale, and outlines the zip in a lighter line. Keep cream off the tape entirely. This is more visible on burgundy than on black.

The question that decides whether this is a ten-year boot or a three-year one: can the zip be replaced? On a welted boot the upper can be opened and a new zip set in by a cobbler who does that work. {{VERIFY: state whether these zips are replaceable and whether you offer it. This is the highest-value answer on the page.}}

Burgundy, and one warning specific to it

Burgundy is a deep red with a brown base — darker and redder than chestnut, warmer than chocolate, and less purple than oxblood. On a boot it is the most useful colour after black and dark brown, because it does what brown does without being brown.

Note that cordovan is used both as a name for roughly this shade and as the name of a specific horse leather. These are calf. If shell cordovan is what you are after, a seller with it will name the tannery, because it is the most valuable thing they can tell you.

The warning: burgundy transfers colour, and a zip boot gives it more chances to. Deep reds are among the worst for crocking, and the lining on a boot sits against your sock along the whole shaft rather than just the foot. Expect transfer onto light socks for the first month. It settles down.

The zip-specific version of the problem is that the tape sits against dyed leather on both sides and will pick up colour from it, so a pale zip tape on a burgundy boot goes pink. That is normal rather than a fault, but it is worth knowing before you see it.

Burgundy also drifts toward rust in sunlight rather than simply fading, and unevenly. Keep them away from windowsills and car footwells.

What to wear with burgundy boots

Grey is the best answer and the one most people do not reach for. Charcoal and mid-grey flannel both work, and the red undertone supplies warmth that a brown boot delivers more heavily. Navy works and always has. Olive is very good.

Dark denim is what most people will wear these with and it works well — burgundy sits against indigo better than brown does.

Do not wear burgundy with brown trousers. The shades are close enough that it reads as a failed match rather than a contrast. Black is difficult too — burgundy goes muddy against black rather than contrasting with it.

Socks in grey, navy or burgundy. Not white, both because it looks wrong and because of the transfer. Match the belt in burgundy or a dark brown one shade deeper — not black, which is the most common mistake with this colour.

Wear them with a slight break so the shaft is not fully exposed standing, and if the boot has a side zip, wear the zip on the inside where it is less conspicuous unless the design intends otherwise.

Where these sit, and when not to buy them

A zip boot is a smart-casual boot. The zip is a visible mechanical component, and however well made it is, it reads as convenience rather than formality. Not for black tie, not for a funeral, and marginal in a conservative office. For those, a black plain toe or wholecut.

Not a weather boot. A welted leather sole handles a wet pavement, not standing water, and a zip line is a lower-resistance route for water into a boot than a laced throat is.

And if you want a boot with nothing on it that can fail, buy a laced one. A chukka or a laced derby boot has no component with a finite life — the leather is the boot, and the leather can be maintained indefinitely. A zip is faster to get on and off, and that is the whole trade. It is a real advantage if you take your boots off often, and worth nothing if you do not.

Sizing: made to order in your US width

Made to order in US sizes, widths D through EEE, and width matters more on a zip boot than on a laced one for a mechanical reason rather than a comfort one.

A laced boot that is slightly too narrow feels tight. A zip boot that is slightly too narrow puts constant outward shear on the closed zip, every step, all day — and shear is what separates teeth. So a width error on a zip boot does not just feel wrong, it destroys the component that ends the boot.

If the boot is a front zip, get this right at the point of ordering because there is no adjustment afterwards at all.

Measure against the size guide. If you are between widths, have a high instep or a thick ankle, or have spent years in a D because that is all shops carry, tell us before you order. Free beforehand, impossible afterwards.

Expect a break-in on the leather. The zip does not break in.

Frequently asked questions

Is a side zip or a front zip better?
Side zip, if the lacing is functional — you set the lacing once to your foot and use the zip daily, so the boot adjusts but you never have to. A front zip is sleeker and gives no adjustment at all.

Do zip boots break?
The zip can, and it is almost always the first thing to go. Teeth separate under shear if the boot is too tight, and grit in the teeth causes most of the rest. The leather will outlast the zip.

Can the zip be replaced?
{{VERIFY: answer this directly. It is the difference between a three-year boot and a twenty-year one.}}

How do I look after the zip?
Brush along the zip line when you brush the boot, and run a graphite pencil or a proper zip lubricant down the teeth twice a year. Keep leather cream and oil off both the teeth and the tape — cream dries pale on fabric tape and oil attracts grit.

What is the difference between burgundy and oxblood?
Oxblood is redder and heads toward purple. Burgundy has more brown in the base, which makes it easier to wear.

Will burgundy boots stain my socks?
They can, particularly when new and with light socks — deep reds transfer more than most dyes, and a boot lining contacts your sock along the whole shaft. Dark socks for the first month and it settles.

What do you wear with burgundy boots?
Grey flannel is the strongest pairing, then navy, then olive. Dark denim works well. Avoid brown and black trousers.

Can zip boots be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Hand welting means the sole comes off below the welt without disturbing the upper or the zip.

Are they waterproof?
No. The sole handles a wet pavement, not standing water, and a zip line lets water in more readily than a laced throat.
