How to tell genuine crocodile from embossed calf

This is the single thing worth knowing before spending money on any exotic, because embossed calf photographs almost identically and costs a fraction as much.

Look for the pore. Every genuine crocodilian scale carries a small sensory pit, a hair sized dot sitting slightly off center on the tile. On the animal these are pressure receptors. They are anatomical, they vary in placement from scale to scale, and no embossing plate reproduces them, because a plate repeats and an animal does not.

Check whether the pattern repeats. Embossing is a plate pressed into cowhide, so the tile layout repeats on a fixed interval. Run your eye along the vamp. On a real hide the tiles change size gradually from the belly toward the flank and no two are quite alike. On embossed calf you will find the same cluster of shapes again further along.

Feel the tile edges. Genuine scales are separate plates with a real seam between them, so a fingernail drawn across catches at each boundary. An embossed surface is one continuous piece of leather with a groove pressed into it, and your nail glides.

What the different cuts mean

Most sellers never specify. If a listing shows large regular tiles across the toe but something noticeably different along the sides, you are looking at panels cut from different parts of the hide, or from different hides.

Why green crocodile barely exists

Crocodile is almost always sold in black, brown or cognac, and the reason is commercial rather than technical. A hide at this cost is bought to be safe, so a tannery dyeing a full skin green is committing expensive material to a color most buyers will not choose.

What makes green worth the risk on crocodile specifically is the scale relief. A flat green calf shoe reads as one uniform color and can look synthetic. A scaled hide is not flat: each tile catches light on its crown and holds shadow at its seam, so a single green dye produces a whole range of values across the vamp, from near black in the seams to a clear bright green on the tile faces.

That is why the color works here and would not on smooth leather. The hide does the tonal work that a patina would otherwise have to do by hand.

Broguing on crocodile is a different job

On calf, brogue perforations are punched straight through a uniform surface. Crocodile is not uniform. The tiles are dense and considerably harder than the seams between them, so a punch that passes cleanly through a seam will crush or tear at a tile crown.

The pattern therefore has to be set out against the hide rather than against the shoe, placing perforations where the leather will take them and working the wing line around the tile structure instead of straight across it. On this shoe the W cap is assembled from crocodile panels with the perforation cut rather than stamped, which is slower and is the reason brogued exotics are rare.

CITES and what you should ask for

Every crocodilian species is listed under CITES, the international convention governing trade in wildlife. Legitimate crocodile leather comes with documentation identifying the species and its origin.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued on, so the shoe can be resoled without disturbing the hide above it. On an exotic that matters more than usual, since the upper will outlast several soles.

Fit and sizing

Crocodile has almost no give. The tiles are rigid and the seams between them flex only slightly, so a shoe that is tight on delivery will be tight in five years, and there is nothing a cobbler can safely do to stretch a scaled upper.

What to wear green crocodile with

Caring for crocodile

Keep wax polish off the scale panels entirely. Wax fills the seams between tiles and clouds the definition that you paid for, and once it has built up in a seam it is difficult to clear without damaging the edge.

Use a clear conditioning cream made for exotic leathers, applied with a cloth and worked along the scale rows rather than across them. Working across the rows drives product under the tile edges. Condition two or three times a year, since a dry tile is a brittle tile and lifting at the edges is the failure mode on crocodile.

Store with cedar trees, keep them out of prolonged direct sun, and rest them a day between wears.
