Maverick Muse Wide Fit Cowboy Boots
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Maverick Muse cowboy boots, made in D, E and F fittings to your own foot measurements. If you have a broad foot, a high instep, or you have simply never found a western boot that fits properly off a shelf, this page explains why that happens and what we do differently.
What "wide" actually means in a cowboy boot
Two completely different measurements get sold under the same word, and confusing them is the single most common reason a wide-fit boot still does not fit.
D, E and F, and why calf width is a different measurement
| Measurement | Where it is taken | What it controls |
|---|---|---|
| Width fitting (D, E, F) | Girth around the ball of the foot | Whether the boot pinches across the toes and forefoot |
| Instep girth | Around the highest point of the arch | Whether the boot grips your foot or slips at the heel |
| Calf circumference | Around the leg at the top of the shaft | Whether the shaft feels tight on the leg |
| Opening circumference | Around the pull-on opening | Whether your foot can pass through at all |
A boot sold as "wide" has usually only addressed the first one. D is a standard men's fitting, E is wide, F is wider again and almost nothing is made in it at any price without going bespoke. But a foot that needs an F at the ball very often also has a high instep, and those two are sized separately here, which is the part a size chart cannot do.
Wide calf is not the same thing as wide fit. Retail uses both phrases interchangeably and they describe opposite ends of the boot. If your problem is the shaft feeling tight on your leg, that is calf circumference, and a wider foot fitting will not fix it. Tell us which one you actually need.
Why a size chart cannot fit a wide foot into a pull-on boot
A cowboy boot has no laces, no zip and no buckle. It is held on entirely by the tension across your instep, and it has to be pulled on over your heel, which is the widest part of your foot in the direction of travel.
Those two requirements pull against each other. The opening has to be generous enough for your heel to pass through. The instep has to be snug enough to grip once the foot is in. On a graded size chart both are scaled from a single length measurement, so a broad foot gets a wider opening and a proportionally wider instep at the same time, which means the foot goes in, and then nothing holds it.
That is why so many wide-fit western boots feel loose and slip at the heel despite being the correct length. The width was addressed; the instep was scaled along with it.
Cutting to measurement separates them. The opening is sized to let your heel through, and the instep is sized to your actual arch girth, independently. It is the whole reason to have a boot made rather than bought.
The permanent heel slip that comes from forcing a boot on
Here is the failure that turns a nearly-right boot into an unwearable one, and almost nobody warns about it.
If the opening is slightly too tight for your heel, you force it. Every time you pull the boot on, the leather at the opening and the topline stretches a little further. Leather stretches in girth and does not recover, so after a few weeks the opening is permanently larger, and the stretch does not stop at the opening. It carries down into the instep, because the two are the same piece of leather.
The result is a boot that now goes on easily and never grips again. Heel slip that does not settle down after break-in, on a boot that measured correctly when new. Once the instep has stretched out, no insole, heel grip or thicker sock genuinely fixes it, those raise your foot rather than tightening the girth.
The prevention is getting the opening right at the outset, which means a measurement rather than an estimate.
Note that this is different from normal break-in heel slip. A quarter to half an inch of lift on a new western boot is expected and disappears as the stiff sole flexes at the ball of the foot. The failure above is heel slip that gets worse instead of better.
Measuring your own foot properly
A test you can run in two minutes with a tape measure. Standing, with your weight on the foot, run a soft tape around the widest part of your forefoot, across the ball, behind the big toe joint. Write that number down. Then measure around the highest point of your instep, where your arch meets the top of your foot. Write that down too.
Most people find the second number surprisingly close to the first, or larger. If your instep girth is larger than your ball girth, you have a high instep, and that is the single most useful thing you can tell a bootmaker. It is also the thing no size chart ever asks for.
Measure late in the day, standing, both feet. Feet swell over the day and most people have one foot measurably larger. We work to the larger one and adjust the other.
Send us those numbers before you order. It changes the pattern, not the price.
Who should not order these
If you take a standard D fitting and you have an average instep, buy an off the shelf boot. A graded size will fit you, it will cost less, and you will have it sooner. Made to measure solves a problem you do not have.
This is for the feet that graded sizing does not serve: a broad forefoot needing an E or F, a high instep, a heel that has always slipped, one foot noticeably larger than the other, or a calf that a standard shaft grips. If two or more of those apply to you, a size chart was never going to work and no amount of trying different brands will change that.
What to wear them with
Straight or bootcut denim worn over the shaft, which is how the shape was designed to be worn. Heavy chinos, moleskin and cord work. A slim leg forced over the shaft bunches at the ankle and ruins the line of both.
Match your belt to the boot leather and keep the buckle small. See the rest of the range in men's cowboy boots.
Care
Condition the shaft as well as the vamp. The vamp gets attention because it is what you see looking down; the shaft dries out unnoticed and a dry shaft cracks along the fold at the ankle. Keep wax out of the shaft stitching, where it builds up in the thread channels and dries pale. Use boot trees or stuff the shaft so it does not fold permanently, and dry naturally away from heat if they get wet, because heat is what ruins wet leather rather than water.
What to expect when you order
Every pair is cut to your measurements after you order rather than pulled from a shelf, so send your numbers before you buy. Nothing is graded from a single length measurement.
Questions we get asked
What does wide fit actually mean in a cowboy boot?
Girth around the ball of the foot, which is the D, E or F fitting. D is a standard men's fitting, E is wide and F is wider again. It does not describe the instep, the opening or the calf, which are three separate measurements.
What is the difference between wide fit and wide calf?
Opposite ends of the boot. Wide fit is girth around the ball of the foot. Wide calf is circumference around the leg at the top of the shaft. Retail uses both phrases interchangeably, but a wider foot fitting will not loosen a tight shaft.
Why do wide fit western boots still slip at the heel?
Because a graded size chart scales the opening and the instep together from one length measurement. A broad foot gets a wider opening and a proportionally wider instep at the same time, so the foot goes in and then nothing holds it.
What causes permanent heel slip in a cowboy boot?
Forcing the boot on when the opening is slightly too tight. Leather stretches in girth and does not recover, and the stretch carries from the opening down into the instep because they are the same piece of leather. After a few weeks the boot goes on easily and never grips again.
Is some heel slip normal on a new western boot?
Yes. A quarter to half an inch of lift is expected and disappears as the stiff sole begins to flex at the ball of the foot. The failure to watch for is slip that gets worse rather than better.
Can an insole or thicker sock fix heel slip?
Not once the instep has stretched. Those raise your foot rather than tightening the girth, which is the measurement that has changed.
How do I measure my own foot for a boot?
Standing with your weight on the foot, run a soft tape around the widest part of the forefoot behind the big toe joint for ball girth, then around the highest point of the instep where the arch meets the top of the foot. Measure late in the day and measure both feet.
What does it mean if my instep girth is larger than my ball girth?
You have a high instep, and it is the single most useful thing you can tell a bootmaker. No size chart asks for it, which is why so many boots that are the correct length still do not fit.
Why do cowboy boots have no laces?
Because laces are a hazard around a horse. The boot is held on entirely by tension across the instep and has to be pulled on over the heel, which is what makes fit harder than on a lace up.
Do I need made to measure boots?
Only if graded sizing has failed you. If you take a standard D fitting with an average instep, an off the shelf boot will fit, cost less and arrive sooner. This is for a broad forefoot, a high instep, persistent heel slip, feet of different sizes, or a calf a standard shaft grips.
