Handcrafted Burgundy Patina Derby

A burgundy patina derby with a chiselled toe, hand painted in layers over crust leather and hand welted on a leather sole. Open lacing, an elongated toe box, and made to order in your size and width.

What a chiselled toe is

A chiselled toe is squared off sharply at the tip with the edges cut back, rather than left as a rounded dome. The toe box narrows toward a distinct, flat-fronted profile, creating a crisp, geometric termination that gives the shoe an angular, architectural stance.

It is a last shape first and a handwork detail second. The last supplies the geometry, then the leather is worked over it wet and shaped by hand so the clean lines hold once dry. A round-toe shoe forgives an imprecise job. A chiselled toe shows every millimetre, which is why it is a reasonable proxy for how carefully the rest of the shoe was made.

Chiselled, sculpted and round toes compared

  • Chiselled: Squared off at the tip, edges cut back — Elongates, slightly more angular
  • Sculpted: Flattened top with a defined side edge — Elongates noticeably, versatile formal/smart-casual
  • Round: Domed, no defined edge — Shortest visual line, most conservative
The terms overlap in practice and different makers use them differently. What matters is the profile in the photographs rather than the word in the listing.

Sizing a chiselled toe derby

This is the question worth answering before anything else, because a chiselled toe does fit differently and most people get it wrong.

The extra length sits in the toe box, ahead of where your toes actually end. So the shoe looks a size or more longer than it is, but the chamber your foot occupies is unchanged. Do not size down to compensate for how long it looks — you will crush your toes against a taper that was never meant to hold them.

Take your normal length. Where it matters is width and instep: a chiselled last is cut narrower through the forefoot than a round one, so if you are between widths, go to the wider. We make D, E, EE and EEE. Check the size guide, or send us your measurements through contact and we will confirm your fit before we cut anything.

How the burgundy patina is built

Patina is not a colour, it is a process. The leather is coloured in thin successive layers, each worked into the grain and burnished before the next goes on. Tone is deepened at the toe, along the sides, around the heel and down the welt — the places a shoe darkens naturally with age.

On a chiselled toe there is one extra consideration. The sharp angles and flat front catch light differently from the curved surfaces behind them, so the shading has to be built cleanly along those geometric planes rather than across them. Done properly, the facets read as highlights and the toe looks longer still. Done carelessly, the distinct corners disappear into a muddy band.

Why real patina needs crust leather

Layered patina only works on crust leather — hide that has been tanned but left undyed, so it will accept and hold pigment. Pre-finished leather has a sealed surface that rejects it, which is why factory shoes get a sprayed or printed effect instead.

The difference shows over time rather than on day one. A sprayed finish sits on the surface and wears through at the flex points. Layered pigment on crust leather is in the grain, so it deepens instead of thinning. If you are comparing burgundy patina shoes, that is the distinction actually worth paying for.

Burgundy, oxblood and cordovan

Worth being precise, since the words get used interchangeably. Burgundy is a red-brown with the red clearly dominant. Oxblood is darker, with more brown. Cordovan describes a leather — shell cordovan, from the equine fibre layer — rather than a colour, though the shade is usually comparable.

Ours is a true burgundy, red-dominant on the flat surfaces and shading toward oxblood at the toe and heel where the layering builds up. In daylight the red is unmistakable; under a lamp it reads closer to brown.

Hand welted, and why the toe depends on it

The upper, insole and welt are stitched together by hand, with no adhesive holding the structure. A maker spends most of a day on a single pair.

On a chiselled toe this is not just a durability question. Hand welting lets the maker draw the upper tight over the last exactly where the sharp angles need to form, and stitch it down while the shape is held. Machine welting applies even tension all the way round, which is fine on a round toe and tends to soften a defined one. The shoe is also fully resoleable, so it has no fixed lifespan — you rebuild it rather than replace it.

What to wear a burgundy patina derby with

Because the derby is inherently more versatile than an oxford due to its open lacing system, this burgundy pair bridges the gap between sharp tailoring and refined smart-casual wear. It pairs effortlessly with textured tailoring, tweed, sharp blazers, and crisp raw denim.

Grey flannel and navy tailoring remain exceptional pairings — the red lifts the neutral tones without competing.

  • Two things to avoid: Brown accessories, which fight burgundy without either winning, and black trousers, which flatten the colour completely.
  • Details: Match with a black or burgundy belt and watch strap. Allow your trousers a clean break so the elongated chiselled toe remains visible.

Caring for hand painted burgundy

Neutral cream only. Coloured burgundy waxes vary enormously in tone and almost none will match layered pigment — a mismatch dulls the depth permanently and cannot be undone.

Brush with horsehair after each wear, condition two or three times a year. Be deliberate at the chiselled corners: those edges take the most contact and thin first, so work cream in gently there rather than scrubbing. Cedar trees between wearings, and let the shoes rest a day between outings so the leather recovers.

What to expect when you order

Every pair is painted and built after you order rather than pulled from a shelf. Tell us your size, width and finish and we make it. Because the colour is layered by hand, no two pairs come out identical — that is a property of the process, not a fault. We confirm your timeline by email before starting work, and we ship worldwide. Frequently asked questions

  • How should I size a chiselled toe derby? Take your normal length. The extra length is in the toe box ahead of your toes, not in the chamber your foot occupies. If you are between widths, go wider.
  • Is the patina painted or dyed? Painted in layers over undyed crust leather, then burnished between coats. It is not a sprayed or printed finish.
  • Will the burgundy wear off? The pigment is in the grain rather than on the surface, so it deepens with wear. Use neutral cream, never coloured polish.
  • Are both shoes identical in colour? Close, not exact. Hand layering varies slightly pair to pair.
  • What is the difference between burgundy and oxblood? Burgundy is red-dominant. Oxblood is darker with more brown in it.
  • Can these be resoled? Yes, repeatedly. Hand welted construction means any competent cobbler can rebuild them.
  • Do you make wide widths? Yes, up to EEE, made to order.
