Chukka, desert or chelsea, three boots, three fits

Google will offer you all three when you search for a navy suede boot, and they are not interchangeable. The difference is entirely in how the boot closes, and that determines who each one fits.

Boot Closure Fits best
Chukka Open lacing, two or three eyelets High insteps, thick feet, most adjustable
Desert boot Same lacing, but unlined on a crepe rubber sole Casual wear; a specific unlined subtype
Chelsea Elastic side gussets, no fastening Average ankles only; no adjustment available

A desert boot is one particular kind of chukka, unlined, two eyelets, crepe sole, as Nathan Clark designed it in 1949. These are dress chukkas: lined, leather-soled, Goodyear welted, and considerably more formal. A chelsea has no lacing at all, which makes it faster to put on and far harder to fit.

If you have ever bought a boot that pinched across the instep or gaped at the ankle, the chukka is the shape most likely to solve it. See the rest of our leather boots, or the chelsea boots if you would rather not lace anything.

Why navy is the better blue for a suede boot

Blue suede spans a wide range and most of it does not work on a boot.

Mid and brighter blues read as summer footwear, and a boot is not summer footwear. You end up with a shoe whose color and whose shape are arguing about the season. Navy avoids that entirely, it is dark enough to behave like a neutral, so it works through autumn and winter when a boot is actually wanted.

Navy also does something specific with suede. On smooth calf, navy reflects light and can tip toward electric or costume-like. The nap on suede scatters light instead of reflecting it, which holds the navy matte and deep. And because the nap sits at different angles across the boot, the color shifts subtly between the flat panels and the flexed areas, you get depth without any painting at all.

It is the one case where suede is the more formal choice than smooth leather rather than the more casual one.

Custom leather boots: what made-to-order actually changes

Made-to-order gets used loosely, so here is exactly what it means here, and what it does not.

This is not bespoke. We are not carving a last to a plaster cast of your foot. What we do is cut and build the boot after you order, on a standard last, in the width you specify. That is a meaningful difference from stock footwear even though it is not full bespoke.

What it gets you: your true width, up to EEE, rather than being pushed into a D because that is what the shop had. The shaft height and topline can be adjusted. Eyelet count is your choice. And because nothing is pre-made, we confirm the fit with you before cutting rather than after you have paid for a boot that does not fit.

What it does not get you: a boot that accommodates a genuinely unusual foot shape. If you have a significant deformity, a substantial length difference between feet, or need orthotic accommodation built into the last, that is bespoke work and you want a local maker who can measure you in person. We would rather say so than take the order.

What we need from you

Your US length, your width if you know it, and the circumference of your foot at the widest part of the ball measured in centimetres over a sock. If you do not know your width, send us that measurement and your length and we will work it out.

Send it through contact or check the size guide first. We confirm everything by email before any leather is cut. You can also see the full options on our customise a pair page.

Suede on a boot behaves differently from suede on a shoe

Most suede care advice is written for shoes, and a boot has two problems a shoe does not.

The first is contact height. A boot's shaft sits at ankle height, which is exactly where curbs, table legs, car door sills and your own opposite foot are. A shoe's upper is lower and takes far less of that. On suede, which marks rather than scuffs, that means the ankle area is the highest-wear part of the boot, and it is where a navy boot will show wear first.

The second is the flex crease. A boot is held at the ankle, so the leather flexes in a concentrated band across the vamp rather than distributing the bend the way a shoe does. On suede that band compresses the nap, and compressed nap reads darker and shinier than the surrounding surface. It is not damage and it brushes back, but it needs brushing after wear rather than occasionally.

Neither is a reason to avoid suede on a boot. Both are reasons the care routine below is more frequent than what you would do for a suede oxford.

Goodyear welted on a leather sole

What this changes for you specifically: suede uppers have a finite working life. Unlike smooth calf, suede cannot be stripped and recoloured, it can only be brushed and refreshed, so eventually the nap is simply worn. A Goodyear welted boot can be resoled repeatedly, which means the value comes from getting a decade out of one upper across several soles rather than replacing the whole boot when the sole goes. A cemented suede boot gives you one sole and then it is finished, with the upper often still good.

A leather sole in genuinely wet or icy conditions wants a thin rubber topy added by a cobbler. That does not affect resoleability.

What to wear navy suede chukkas with

Navy suede is more versatile than the color suggests, because it functions as a dark neutral.

It works with gray flannel, charcoal, stone and tan chinos, olive, and dark denim. It also works with navy pants provided the tones differ enough to read as deliberate rather than as a failed match. With tailoring, keep to a sport coat rather than a business suit, suede nap against worsted is too soft a contrast, and a boot under a suit is already a stretch.

Avoid brown accessories, which fight navy. Black or navy belt, hardware matched to your watch. Keep the pant hem short enough that the shaft and the top eyelets stay visible; a long hem swallows a chukka and leaves an odd bulk at the ankle. No break or a slight break.

Sizing: made to order in your width

We make D, E, EE and EEE.

Chukkas are the most forgiving lace-up we build, open lacing opens wide across the instep and gives genuine adjustment. If you fall between widths on other shoes, this is the shape most likely to work for you.

Two specifics. Suede gives more readily than calf because there is no finish layer restraining it, so do not order snug expecting the boot to open up, order your true width, or the vamp will stretch and bag into ridges that catch light differently from the flat nap. And a boot wants slightly more toe room than a shoe, because your foot slides forward more when the ankle is held.

Send your measurements through contact and we will confirm before cutting.

Caring for navy suede

Brush more often than you would a suede shoe, and brush lightly. A suede brush along the nap after every two or three wears keeps dust from embedding and lifts the flex crease before it sets. Hard brushing wears the fibre tips, which on navy exposes lighter fibre underneath and dulls the color.

Pay attention to the ankle area specifically, since that is where the contact is. A crepe or rubber block lifts scuffs there without any liquid.

Protector spray before first wear and a few times a year after. Navy shows water spotting more readily than brown, so do not skip it. If the boots get soaked, pack them with paper and dry them away from every heat source, then brush the nap back up once dry, heat is what ruins wet suede, not the water. Keep them out of prolonged direct sun, which fades navy unevenly.

Cedar trees between wearings, and rest them a day between outings so the nap recovers.

What to expect when you order

Cut and built after you order. Send us your size, width and eyelet preference and we make the pair. Suede varies slightly between hides in depth of color, so your boots will be very close to the photographs rather than identical. We confirm your timeline by email before starting work, and we ship worldwide. Full details are in shipping and returns, or browse new arrivals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a chukka and a desert boot? A desert boot is an unlined, two-eyelet chukka on a crepe rubber sole. These are lined dress chukkas on Goodyear welted leather soles.

Are these custom made? Made to order, yes, cut in your width after you order, with your choice of eyelet count and shaft height. Not full bespoke, since we build on a standard last.

Is calf suede or split suede used? Calf suede. The nap is short and dense and brushes back after a scuff.

Can I wear navy suede in winter? Yes, in dry cold. For wet or icy weather ask a cobbler to add a thin rubber topy.

Will the navy fade? Not with a protector spray and light brushing. Prolonged direct sun is what fades navy unevenly.

How many eyelets? Two or three is standard for a chukka. Tell us your preference.

Should I size up for suede stretch? No, order your true width. A stretched suede vamp bags and creases into ridges.

Can these be resoled? Yes, repeatedly. Goodyear welted construction means any competent cobbler can rebuild them.

Do you make wide widths? Yes, up to EEE, made to order.
