Men's Purple Patina Chukka Boots
4.0 / 5 (2 reviews)Product Details
Men's purple patina chukka boots in full grain calf with the color built by hand in layers, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. A boot gives a patina artist something a shoe cannot: height. That single difference is why a patina boot has more depth than the same treatment on an oxford.
Why a boot is a better canvas than a shoe
On a shoe the artist works one dimension. The vamp runs from the toe back to the throat and the gradation follows that length: deep at the toe, lifting through the middle, easing at the throat. It is a horizontal movement and the eye reads it as one.
A boot adds a vertical axis. The shaft carries the color upward as well as backward, so a gradation can run in two directions at once: deepest at the toe, lifting across the vamp, and lifting again up the shaft toward the topline. What you get is depth rather than a graded surface, and it is the reason a well painted boot looks considerably more expensive than a well painted shoe in the same color.
It also means twice the surface area and twice the layering, which is where the extra labor goes.
Purple, and the honest answer about wearing it
Purple is the patina color people worry most about and regret least, and the reason is how it behaves in different light.
In low indoor light a deep purple reads almost black. In daylight it declares itself. That gap between the two is the whole thing: most of a shoe's wears happen indoors, so the color spends most of its life behaving like a dark neutral and only shows itself when you are outside or close to someone.
Depth decides whether that works. A mid or bright violet reads as costume immediately and nothing rescues it. The test: if you can name the color from across a room, it is too bright.
What it goes with: charcoal and mid gray are the strongest by a distance, because gray is neutral enough to let the purple be the only color in play. Navy fights it, since both are cool and close in depth. Brown is worse, warm against cool with no separation. Black flattens it entirely.
Chukka, desert boot, and the word people use wrongly
A chukka is an ankle height boot with two or three eyelets and open derby lacing. That is the whole definition and it is narrower than how the word gets used.
| Boot | Closure | Sole | How dressy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chukka | Two or three eyelets, open lacing | Leather, welted | Will carry flannel pants |
| Desert boot | Two eyelets, open lacing | Crepe rubber, unlined | Casual only |
| Chelsea | Elastic gusset, no fastening | Leather | Dressy, cleaner silhouette |
The desert boot is what most people mean when they say chukka. It is a specific thing: crepe soled, unlined, softer and considerably less formal. A leather soled welted chukka will carry flannel pants where a crepe soled desert boot will not.
Applied patina and earned patina
- Earned patina is what happens to good leather over years: the toe and heel darken from polishing, the flex creases hold shadow, the color deepens unevenly according to how you walk.
- Applied patina is hand layered dye built on crust leather before the boot is finished, made to imitate what twenty years of that would have done.
The two are compatible. An applied patina on full grain calf keeps developing after you buy it, so the boot at five years is not the boot in the photographs. That is intended behavior rather than a fault.
The finish also tells you what the leather is. Hand painted patina only works on unfinished crust calf that still accepts dye through the grain. On pigmented or corrected grain leather the dye sits on a coating and wipes off, so a boot that genuinely takes a layered patina cannot be corrected grain.
Hand painted or sprayed, and the boot specific check
Look for a boundary. Hand layered pigment has no edge you can point to, because each coat is thin and continuous. A spray stops, usually as a soft oval on the toe.
On a boot the better place to look is the topline. Hand work carries the color right up to the edge of the shaft and grades it there deliberately, because the topline is the last thing the eye follows. A spray fades out before it reaches the top, so the shaft goes pale near the opening and the gradation has no resolution.
On a worn pair, hand applied color deepens at the ankle flex because the pigment is in the grain and gets burnished by movement. A sprayed film cracks and lightens at that same crease, and on a boot the ankle crease is the hardest working fold on the whole thing.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the painted leather above it. On a hand colored boot that is the whole point, since the patina is most of the cost and it survives every resole.
Full grain calf upper, open derby lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's boots and more of the technique in the hand painted patina collection.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.
A chukka has only two or three eyelets, which gives it less adjustment than a taller derby boot even though the lacing is open. The fit across the ball of the foot therefore matters more, because there is less lacing to compensate with.
Do not size up for width. A boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front, which is the most common complaint about boots that are otherwise well made. Order your true length and specify the width separately. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you are between widths or have a high instep.
What to wear them with
- Strongest: charcoal and mid gray, in flannel or worsted.
- Works: dark denim, gray and stone chinos.
- Avoid: navy, brown and black tailoring for the reasons above, and a formal business suit, because a chukka is a chukka whatever color it is.
- Do not match: nothing else purple in the outfit. One purple item is deliberate, two is a theme.
Match your belt to black or charcoal rather than chasing the purple. Also in the range: the gray patina chukka boots and the purple patina monk strap.
Care
Neutral cream only. Pigmented polish over hand layered color flattens every gradation permanently, and on purple there is no recovering it once it has gone flat.
Two things specific to a boot. The shaft is the part everyone neglects, because the vamp is what you see when you look down and the shaft dries out unnoticed; cream the whole boot, shaft included, every four to six wears. And the ankle flex takes more movement than any point on a shoe, so keep wax off it entirely and confine wax to the toe and heel counter.
Use boot trees or stuff the shaft, because an empty shaft folds at the ankle and the fold becomes permanent, taking the patina with it. Keep the boots out of direct sunlight, which fades any patina. Rest them a day between wears and dry naturally away from heat.
What to expect when you order
Every pair is painted by hand after you order, so no two are the same, and crust leather takes pigment differently hide to hide. Production is 10 to 14 days for hand painted patina, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
Why does a patina look better on a boot than on a shoe?
Because a boot adds a vertical axis. On a shoe the gradation runs one way, from the toe back to the throat. On a boot the color can run backward and upward at once, deepest at the toe and lifting up the shaft, which reads as depth rather than a graded surface.
Is purple actually wearable?
Yes, if it is deep. In low indoor light a deep purple reads almost black and in daylight it declares itself, and since most wears happen indoors the color spends most of its life behaving like a dark neutral. A mid or bright violet reads as costume and nothing rescues it.
What should I wear purple boots with?
Charcoal and mid gray are strongest, because gray lets the purple be the only color in play. Navy fights it, since both are cool and close in depth. Brown is worse, warm against cool with no separation. Black flattens it entirely.
What is the difference between a chukka and a desert boot?
The sole and the construction. A desert boot is crepe soled and unlined, softer and considerably more casual. A leather soled welted chukka will carry flannel pants where a crepe soled desert boot will not.
Is a chukka the same as a Chelsea boot?
No. A chukka has two or three eyelets and open lacing. A Chelsea has an elastic gusset and no fastening at all, which gives it a cleaner silhouette and no adjustment.
What is the difference between applied and earned patina?
Earned patina is what good leather does over years as the toe and heel darken from polishing and the creases hold shadow. Applied patina is hand layered dye built on crust leather before the boot is finished. They are compatible, so an applied patina keeps developing after you buy it.
How do I tell hand painted from sprayed on a boot?
Look at the topline. Hand work carries the color right up to the edge of the shaft and grades it there, because the topline is the last thing the eye follows. A spray fades out before it reaches the top, so the shaft goes pale near the opening.
Does the finish tell me anything about the leather?
Yes. Hand painted patina only works on unfinished crust calf that still accepts dye through the grain. On corrected grain leather the dye sits on a coating and wipes off, so a boot that genuinely takes a layered patina cannot be corrected grain.
What size should I order?
Your true length with the width specified separately. Do not size up for width, because a boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front. A chukka also has only two or three eyelets, so there is less lacing to compensate with.
Do I need boot trees?
Yes, or at minimum stuff the shaft. An empty shaft folds at the ankle and the fold becomes permanent, taking the patina with it.
Which part of a patina boot gets neglected?
The shaft. The vamp gets polished because it is what you see when you look down, and the shaft dries out unnoticed. Cream the whole boot, shaft included, every four to six wears.
