Men's Burgundy Spectator Wingtip Oxford Shoes
5.0 / 5 (1 reviews)Product Details
Men's burgundy spectator wingtip oxford shoes, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. This is the quiet spectator: the two tone pattern without the volume, and the version most men can actually wear more than twice a year.
The quiet spectator
Two tone shoes are judged by how far apart the two colors sit, and there is a spectrum.
| Pairing | Contrast | Reads as |
|---|---|---|
| Black and white | Maximum brightness, no shared temperature | Graphic, performance dress, deliberate |
| Tan and white | Moderate brightness, both warm | The original sporting pairing. Summer, daytime |
| Burgundy and white or cream | Moderate brightness, one deep warm tone | The quietest spectator. Smart casual, year round |
Burgundy does something neither of the others manages. It is dark enough that from ten feet the shoe reads as a dark shoe with a light panel rather than as a two tone statement, and warm enough that the pale panel does not feel clinical against it.
That is the whole appeal. A black and white spectator announces itself before you do. A burgundy one waits until someone is close enough to notice.
Where the spectator came from
The shoe began as sportswear. John Lobb claim their firm made the first pair in 1868, built for cricket and golf. The toe cap, heel counter and throat took the dirt and scuffing, so those areas were cut in darker leather, and the panels that stayed clean were cut in white buckskin or nubuck.
It peaked in the 1920s, by which point the function was forgotten and the shoe had become a statement. Americans call it a spectator, after the spectators at those events. The British call it a co-respondent, a joke at the wearer's expense from divorce law, where the co-respondent was the third party named in an adultery case.
Understanding the original logic is useful when you are looking at any spectator: the darker leather should be where a shoe actually wears. If a listing puts the light panel on the toe, the pattern was drawn rather than derived.
Burgundy, oxblood and cordovan
Three words, and one of them is a material rather than a color.
- Burgundy is a shade: deep red brown with a purple undertone.
- Oxblood is the same family, usually a touch darker and browner. Also a shade.
- Shell cordovan is a material, cut from the fibrous membrane under a horse's hindquarter and tanned over roughly six months. It is dense, non porous, and it ripples instead of creasing. It is commonly dyed burgundy, which is where the confusion started, and it costs several times what calf does.
A listing saying "cordovan color" is describing a shade of burgundy. A listing saying "shell cordovan" is claiming a material. These are full grain calf in burgundy.
Why a wingtip carries two colors better than a cap toe
This is the pattern decision that matters most on a spectator.
A straight cap toe makes the two leathers meet along one hard horizontal line across the toe. That line is short, it is perpendicular to the direction you look at the shoe from, and it puts maximum contrast in one place.
A wingtip cap sweeps back along both sides of the shoe in a W. The boundary becomes a long curve running from the toe back toward the heel on each side, which does three things:
- It spreads the contrast over a longer line, so no single point is doing all the work.
- It follows the shape of the foot, so the eye reads it as part of the shoe rather than as a stripe painted across it.
- It gives the gimping something to do. The serrated edge along the wing is the last detail before one leather becomes another, and it softens the transition in a way a plain cut edge does not.
On a two tone shoe the gimp line is also the first place poor making shows. A ragged or uneven gimp on a single color shoe is a small fault. Here it sits on the boundary between two contrasting leathers and there is nowhere for it to hide.
Cut and stitched, or sprayed over a mask
The check that separates a made shoe from a decorated one, and it takes five seconds.
Run a fingernail across the boundary between the two colors. On cut and stitched panels you feel the step where one piece of leather sits over the other, and you can see a stitch line along it. On a sprayed finish it is perfectly smooth, because it is one piece of leather with two colors applied to it.
Why it matters: a stitched seam holds, each leather ages on its own, and a cobbler can restitch it if it ever pulls. A sprayed edge chips at the boundary, the line blurs, and there is no putting it back.
How formal is it, and where it actually goes
Two rules set the formality of any shoe: broguing takes it down a step, and a second color takes it down another. So despite the oxford construction, no spectator is business formal.
Burgundy is the one that gets closest. Because the dark leather is genuinely dark, this reads as a brogue with a light panel rather than as a two tone shoe, which means:
- Works: an odd jacket and pants, a summer or mid weight suit, weddings, race meetings, smart casual generally.
- Stretches to: a relaxed business casual office, which a black and white spectator never would.
- Avoid: a formal business suit, a funeral, black tie, or any dress code that names black lace ups.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.
Two leathers cut and stitched as separate panels, full brogue wing cap with a gimped edge and toe medallion, closed oxford lacing with the facings stitched under the vamp, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's leather oxford shoes.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.
Because this is an oxford, instep height decides the fit. When laced, the facings should sit close but not touching, with a narrow even gap. Wide apart means the shoe is too small across the instep and there is no correcting it afterwards; touching means it is too big.
Specific to a spectator: the color boundary sits on a seam, so a seam falling across the widest part of your foot creases hard in the first month, right along the line where the two leathers meet. If you have a wide forefoot, tell us and we will adjust the pattern rather than the size.
Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you have a high instep or are between widths.
What to wear them with
- Strongest: charcoal and mid gray, where a cool neutral lets the burgundy carry the shoe.
- Works: navy with enough separation in depth, cream and stone pants, an odd jacket, dark denim.
- Avoid: brown tailoring, which fights the red; black, which flattens it; and anything else with a second contrast or pattern.
Match your belt to the burgundy and ignore the pale panel entirely. Also in the range: the tan and white spectator and the black and white wingtip spectator.
Care, two materials and two routines
Treat each color as a separate shoe and never let the products meet.
- Work the pale panel first, while your cloth is clean, with a neutral cream used sparingly. The risk on any spectator is dark polish migrating into the light panel, and one careless pass leaves the boundary gray permanently.
- Let it dry, then do the burgundy with a separate cloth and a burgundy or neutral cream, never brown. Brown cream on burgundy pulls it toward a muddy chestnut over a year and the shift does not reverse.
- Brush along the seam between the colors, never across it.
- Clear the perforations with a horsehair brush before the cream sets, since cream dried in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation.
- Wax only the burgundy, and only at the toe and heel counter where the leather does not flex.
Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, dry naturally away from heat.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
Is a burgundy spectator easier to wear than black and white?
Considerably. Burgundy is dark enough that from ten feet the shoe reads as a dark shoe with a light panel rather than as a two tone statement, and warm enough that the pale panel does not feel clinical against it.
What is a spectator shoe?
A two tone shoe with the toe cap, heel counter and throat in a darker leather and the remaining panels in a lighter one. John Lobb say their firm made the first pair in 1868, built as sportswear for cricket and golf.
How can I tell if a spectator pattern was designed properly?
The darker leather should sit where a shoe actually wears: the toe cap, heel counter and throat. If a listing puts the light panel on the toe, the pattern was drawn rather than derived from the original logic.
Is burgundy the same as cordovan?
No. Burgundy and oxblood are shades. Shell cordovan is a material, cut from the fibrous membrane under a horse's hindquarter and tanned over roughly six months, and it is commonly dyed burgundy, which is where the confusion started.
Why a wingtip rather than a straight cap toe on a two tone shoe?
Because a straight cap makes the two leathers meet along one hard horizontal line. A wingtip turns that boundary into a long curve running back along both sides, which spreads the contrast, follows the shape of the foot, and gives the gimped edge something to do.
What is gimping?
The serrated finish along the edge of the wing cap. On a two tone shoe it is the last detail before one leather becomes another, so a ragged or uneven gimp line sits right on the boundary and has nowhere to hide.
How do I tell cut and stitched panels from sprayed two tone?
Run a fingernail across the boundary. On cut and stitched panels you feel the step where one piece of leather sits over the other, and you can see a stitch line. A sprayed finish is perfectly smooth, because it is one piece of leather with two colors on it.
Can I wear a burgundy spectator to work?
In a relaxed business casual office, probably, which a black and white spectator never manages. Not with a formal business suit, at a funeral, at black tie, or where a dress code names black lace ups.
Where should the color boundary sit on my foot?
Behind the widest part. The boundary sits on a seam, and a seam falling across the joint creases hard in the first month, right along the line where the two leathers meet.
How do I polish a two tone shoe?
Work the pale panel first while your cloth is clean, using a neutral cream sparingly, let it dry, then do the burgundy with a separate cloth. Dark polish migrating into the light panel leaves the boundary gray permanently.
What cream should I use on burgundy?
Burgundy or neutral, never brown. Brown cream on burgundy pulls it toward a muddy chestnut over a year and the shift does not reverse.
