Men's Navy Blue Crocodile Chukka Boots
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Men's navy blue crocodile chukka boots in genuine hide, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Coloring an exotic hide is a different job from coloring calf, and navy is the color where that difference shows most.
Why a colored exotic is harder than a black one
Almost all crocodile in menswear is black or brown, and there is a technical reason for it rather than a stylistic one.
A crocodile hide is not one uniform surface. It is hundreds of separate keratin plates with channels of softer skin between them, and the two take dye at different rates. The plates are dense and resist penetration; the channels are looser and absorb quickly. Dye a hide dark and that difference disappears into the depth of the color. Dye it a mid tone like navy and the channels come out noticeably darker than the tiles unless the tanner has accounted for it.
Done badly you get a boot where the pattern looks outlined in a darker blue, like a drawing rather than a hide. Done properly the tiles and channels land close enough in tone that the pattern reads as relief and shadow, which is what it should be.
Why navy specifically
Navy is the most useful non black color a dress boot can be, and on an exotic it does something black cannot.
Black crocodile hides its own pattern, because black absorbs light and the tiles and channels both go to the same dark. You have to be close to see what the boot is made of. Navy keeps enough brightness in the tile faces for the pattern to read clearly at normal distance, so the hide is visible without the boot being loud.
It is also the more wearable color in practice. A black croc boot reads formal and slightly severe. Navy is dark enough to behave like a neutral, sitting under gray and navy tailoring, and warm enough in tone to work with denim, which black croc never quite does.
Crocodile, alligator and caiman
Three animals are sold under names that sound interchangeable and the price gap between them is large.
Crocodile carries a small sensory pit on every scale, including the belly tiles. Alligator has no pits on the belly at all. Caiman has a bony plate inside most scales, which makes the tiles hard to the touch and prone to calcium creases, and it costs a fraction of the other two while still being technically a crocodilian.
The quickest check is pressure. Press a tile with a fingernail: crocodile and alligator give slightly, caiman is hard because there is bone in it. The second check is the sensory pit itself, the small dot near the edge of each scale.
Is it real hide at all
Tile edges. Real scales are separate plates with genuine depth between them, so a fingernail dragged across catches at each edge. Embossed cowhide is one pressed surface and your nail glides.
Repetition. An embossing plate repeats on a fixed interval. A real hide grades continuously from larger tiles to smaller and never repeats.
The flesh side. A genuine hide shows the tile structure faintly on the back as a shadow of the pattern. Embossed leather is uniform behind, because the pattern is only on the surface.
Exotic hide on a boot shape
A chukka is an ankle height boot with two or three eyelets and open derby lacing, which means the upper wraps the part of your foot that moves most.
That is a real constraint with crocodile. The tiles do not flex at all; only the channels between them do. On a loafer the hide bends in one place, at the ball of the foot. On a chukka it bends at the ball and at the ankle, so the tile layout has to be planned before cutting so that channels fall where the boot creases. Get it wrong and a hard fold forms across the tiles at the ankle within a season, and a folded crocodile tile never recovers.
This is why exotic boots are more expensive than exotic shoes cut from the same hide: more of the skin has to be discarded to get the layout right.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the hide above it. On a hide at this price that is most of the value, since the upper will outlast several soles.
Genuine crocodile upper, open derby lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. CITES documentation available on request, since crocodilian skins are traded under permit. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. More exotics in the exotic series.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.
Crocodile barely stretches. The tiles have almost no give and only the channels flex, so there is no breaking in to rely on and the boot will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want on day one.
A chukka also gives you only two or three eyelets, so there is less lacing to compensate with than on a taller derby boot and the fit across the ball matters more. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up for room across the ball, which only makes the boot long, and a long boot slides forward on any decline. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you are between widths or have a high instep.
What to wear them with
One rule governs an exotic: the boot is the exotic, so nothing else in the outfit should be. No exotic watch strap, no second textured leather, no competing pattern.
Navy croc is more versatile than black. Mid and charcoal gray pants are the strongest pairing, because gray lets the hide be the only thing in play. Navy works provided there is enough separation in depth. Dark denim works and suits the shape. Stone and cream chinos work in warmer weather.
What it does not want is brown or tan above it, which fights navy at every depth, or black tailoring, which flattens the blue entirely. Match your belt to plain navy or black smooth calf rather than chasing an exotic belt, because two exotic pieces bought separately will be different hides and will nearly match, which looks worse than not matching at all.
Also in the range: the black crocodile chukka boots and the green crocodile wingtip oxford.
Care
No wax polish, ever. Wax fills the channels between the tiles and dries pale, which outlines every scale in a lighter tone. On a colored hide it is worse than on black, because the pale residue against navy reads as chalk.
Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Use a conditioner made for exotic leathers two or three times a year, applied thinly and buffed off, which stops the hide drying and the tile edges lifting. No brushing, because a stiff brush catches and lifts those edges.
Keep them out of direct sunlight, which matters more on navy than on black: UV will lift a mid tone dye faster than a dark one, and on a hide the fading shows first on the tile faces while the channels hold their color, which exaggerates the outlining effect. Use boot trees or stuff the shaft so the boot does not fold at the ankle. Rest them a day between wears.
What to expect when you order
Cut after you order from a selected skin, with the tile layout planned around where the boot flexes. Every hide is patterned differently and takes dye slightly differently, so your pair will be close to the photographs rather than a copy of them. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
Why is a colored crocodile harder to produce than a black one?
Because a hide is hundreds of separate keratin plates with softer channels between them, and the two take dye at different rates. The plates resist penetration and the channels absorb quickly. A dark color hides that difference, but a mid tone like navy shows it, and done badly the pattern looks outlined in a darker blue.
Why navy rather than black crocodile?
Because black absorbs light and the tiles and channels both go to the same dark, so the hide hides its own pattern unless you are close. Navy keeps enough brightness in the tile faces for the pattern to read at normal distance, and it is dark enough to behave like a neutral while still working with denim.
What is the difference between crocodile, alligator and caiman?
Crocodile has a small sensory pit on every scale including the belly. Alligator has none on the belly. Caiman has a bony plate inside most scales, so the tiles feel hard and crease rather than flex, and it costs a fraction of the other two while still being a crocodilian.
How do I check whether the hide is real?
Drag a fingernail across the tiles, which catches on a real hide and glides on embossed leather. Look for repetition, since an embossing plate repeats and an animal never does. And check the flesh side, where a genuine hide shows the tile structure faintly while embossed leather is uniform behind.
Why do exotic boots cost more than exotic shoes in the same hide?
Because more of the skin has to be discarded. Crocodile tiles do not flex, only the channels between them do, and on a boot the hide has to bend at the ball and at the ankle, so the tile layout has to be planned around two flex points instead of one.
Do these come with CITES documentation?
Yes, on request. Crocodilian skins are traded under permit, so documentation should exist for any genuine croc product.
Does crocodile stretch?
Barely. The tiles have almost no give and only the channels flex, so there is no breaking in and the boot will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want on day one.
Can I use wax polish on these?
No. Wax fills the channels between the tiles and dries pale, outlining every scale, and on a colored hide the pale residue reads as chalk against the navy. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and condition two or three times a year.
Does sunlight matter more on a navy exotic?
Yes. UV lifts a mid tone dye faster than a dark one, and on a hide the fading shows first on the tile faces while the channels hold their color, which exaggerates the outlining effect. Keep them out of direct light.
