What a chukka boot is

A chukka is an ankle boot with two or three pairs of eyelets and open lacing, where the quarters sit on top of the vamp rather than closing over it. The shaft finishes just above the ankle bone. The name comes from polo, where a chukka is a period of play.

The appeal is range. It is the one boot that works with tailoring and with denim, which is why it has stayed in wardrobes for seventy years without ever quite becoming a trend.

Chukka or desert boot, they aren't the same thing

The terms get used interchangeably, but a desert boot is one specific kind of chukka: unlined, two eyelets, and built on a crepe rubber sole. Nathan Clark designed it in 1949 after seeing boots made for British officers in the Cairo bazaars, and Clarks has defined that version ever since.

Ours are dress chukkas rather than desert boots. Leather sole instead of crepe, leather lining instead of unlined, and Goodyear welted rather than cemented. That makes them heavier, considerably more formal, and repairable. If you want a crepe-soled desert boot, buy the original, it does that job well. If you want a chukka you can wear with a suit and resole for a decade, that is what these are for.

Why suede suits this boot

Suede softens the chukka's outline, and that is what keeps an ankle boot from reading as heavy. It also breathes far better than smooth calf, so a suede chukka stays wearable in warm weather in a way a polished boot does not.

The trade-off is that suede marks. It spots in rain and scuffs against curbs, though both are usually recoverable with a brush rather than a repair. Treated with a protector spray before first wear, a good suede boot handles ordinary weather without complaint.

A maker spends most of a day on a single pair. The boot can be resoled repeatedly, and the leather sole and cork bed mold to the shape of your foot rather than resisting it.

Cemented and machine-welted boots at similar prices cannot be rebuilt the same way, which means they have a fixed lifespan no matter how well you look after them. On a boot you intend to keep, that difference is the whole point.

Choosing a color

Dark brown is the most useful single pair, it goes with gray, navy, charcoal and denim, and it hides marks better than any other shade. Tan and sand read more casual and suit warm weather, but show scuffs sooner. Black suede is the most formal option and the closest a chukka gets to business dress. Gray sits between brown and black and works well against tailoring.

Are suede chukka boots good for summer?

Better than most boots, yes. Suede breathes considerably more than smooth calf, the ankle-height shaft leaves your leg uncovered, and the open lacing lets air move through the instep. A suede chukka in tan or sand is a genuine warm-weather boot in a way a Chelsea or a lined derby boot is not.

The limit is rain rather than heat. Summer downpours spot suede, so treat them before first wear and let them dry naturally if they get caught out.

What to wear suede chukka boots with

Dark denim and chinos are the obvious pairing, and the one the boot was built for. With tailoring, keep to a sport coat and flannel trousers rather than a full business suit, the suede nap reads too soft against worsted.

Trouser hem matters more with a chukka than with a shoe. Aim for no break or a slight break, so the boot's shaft is visible rather than buried. Avoid wearing suede chukkas with shorts, and avoid pairing them with a suede jacket in the same tone.

Chukkas are among the more forgiving boots to fit, because open lacing opens wide across the instep and gives real adjustment. Looking after suede

Suede needs brushing, not polishing. Use a suede brush along the grain to lift the nap after every few wears, and a crepe or rubber block on scuffs before reaching for anything wet.

Spray a suede protector before first wear and again a few times a year. If the boots get soaked, stuff them with paper, let them dry away from any heat source, then brush the nap back up once dry, heat is what ruins wet suede, not the water. Use cedar trees between wearings to hold the shape.
