Horsehide, shell cordovan and crazy horse

Horsehide is the animal's skin. The part used for footwear is usually the front, the forepart of the horse, which the trade calls horse front. It carries a visible grain with more texture than calf, and it is noticeably more abrasion-resistant than cowhide. Horses live longer than cattle, so their hides carry more character: grain variation, healed marks, the evidence of a life. That is a feature, not a flaw, and it is why no two pairs match.

Shell cordovan is not skin at all. It is a dense layer sitting beneath the skin at the rump, shaved clear and tanned over six to nine months. It has almost no grain, and rather than creasing it forms rolls. It is the most expensive leather generally available anywhere. If a boot is shell, the maker will say shell and the price will confirm it.

Crazy horse is not horse. It is cowhide finished with a heavy wax that lightens where you scratch or flex it. The name describes the look. It is a decent, honest leather at a fraction of the price of the other two, and it is what most search results for horse leather boots will actually show you.

How these are built

Hand welted and hand stitched. There is no glued canvas rib: a ridge called a holdfast is cut from the insole leather itself and the welt is stitched through it by hand. The sole is leather with a fiddle back waist, meaning it is bevelled and narrowed under the arch by hand rather than left square, which is slow work and mostly why you rarely see it at this price. Fit

Take your usual formal size and read the men's shoe size guide before ordering, because every pair is cut after you buy it. A chukka sits closer than a shoe because the shaft holds your ankle. Horsehide is denser than calf, so expect a longer break-in: firm for the first fortnight, then it gives and stays given.

How to wear them

Dark denim, olive, stone, grey flannel. A chukka on a leather sole is dressier than most people assume, so it takes soft tailoring comfortably, though not a business suit. Care

Horsehide is denser than cowhide, so it takes conditioner more slowly and needs less of it. Use a small amount of cream, work it in, and give it a day to absorb before you judge whether it needs more. Overloading a dense hide leaves it tacky and dulls the grain.

It also creases differently. Where calf makes fine lines across the vamp, horsehide folds in coarser, broader creases. That is the material behaving correctly, not a fault. Brush after each wear, use cedar trees, and keep it out of standing water because the leather sole will soak through before the upper does.

Questions we get asked

Is horsehide better than cowhide?
Tougher, not softer. It is more abrasion-resistant and denser, and it carries more natural character in the grain. It also takes longer to break in. Better for durability, not for immediate comfort.

Is this shell cordovan?
No. Shell comes from a small area at the horse's rump, takes six to nine months to tan, and costs several times what this boot does. Any shell boot is priced accordingly and says so plainly.

What is the difference between horsehide and crazy horse leather?
Horsehide comes from a horse. Crazy horse is cowhide with a wax finish, named for its appearance. They are unrelated materials at very different prices.
