Men's black and white wingtip spectator shoes, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. This is the loudest two tone combination there is, and the page is going to be straight with you about where that works, because the difference between sharp and costume is narrow here.

Black and white is the maximum contrast version

All spectators work by contrast, and contrast has two dimensions: brightness and temperature.

  • Tan and white, the original pairing, is a moderate brightness contrast between two warm tones. They belong to the same family, so the shoe reads as one object with a pattern.
  • Black and white is the maximum brightness contrast possible, between two colors with no temperature relationship at all. Both are neutrals, so there is nothing to soften the join.

That makes this the version with the most presence and the least forgiveness. It reads as a deliberate graphic statement from across a room, which is exactly what some people want and exactly what makes it wrong for a summer wedding where tan and white would pass unnoticed.

Where it works: evening events, jazz and swing dressing, a sharply cut suit where the shoe is meant to be the point, stage and performance. Where it does not: daytime business, anywhere conservative, and any outfit where you were hoping the shoes would not be noticed.

Where the spectator came from

The shoe began as sportswear. John Lobb claim their firm made the first pair in 1868, built for cricket and golf. The toe cap, heel counter and throat took the dirt and the scuffing, so those areas were cut in a darker leather while the panels that stayed clean were cut in white buckskin or nubuck.

It peaked in the 1920s, by which point the sporting purpose was forgotten. Americans call it a spectator, after the spectators at those events. The British call it a co-respondent, which is a joke at the wearer's expense: in English divorce law the co-respondent was the third party named in an adultery case.

Black and white specifically is the version that carried into the 1930s and 40s through music and film, which is why it still reads as performance dress rather than as sportswear.

The white panel is the whole maintenance problem

Nobody warns buyers about this and it is the reason most black and white spectators end up unworn.

A white panel on a shoe sits four inches off the ground and collects everything. That would be manageable on its own. What makes it hard is that it sits directly against black, and black polish is the single most mobile substance in shoe care. One pass with a cloth that has black on it, and the white panel takes a gray cast along the boundary that does not come out.

Three rules follow, and they are not optional:

  • Two cloths, two brushes, never shared. Keep them physically apart, not just "remember which is which".
  • White first, always. Work the light panel while everything is clean, let it dry completely, then do the black.
  • Neutral cream on the white, never a white pigment polish. White pigment cakes in the seam and the perforations and dries chalky, which looks worse than a slightly aged white.

A practical consequence: this is a shoe for occasions, not for rotation. Worn once a month and cleaned properly it stays sharp for years. Worn casually and cleaned in a hurry it goes gray at the boundary within a season.

Is the white dyed or coated?

This decides how the panel ages, and it is worth checking on any pale leather.

Dyed through Pigment coated
How the color is applied Dye penetrates into the fiber A pigment film sits on the surface
What a scuff does Removes finish; the color underneath is the same Removes the film and exposes darker hide beneath
How it ages Softens and yellows slightly, evenly Cracks along flex lines, and the cracks show dark

The check: look at the flex crease on any worn white panel. Dyed leather creases the same color, slightly deeper. A coated panel creases as a visibly darker line, because the film has thinned and the hide is showing through.

Cut and stitched, or sprayed over a mask

The other check that separates a made shoe from a decorated one.

Run a fingernail across the boundary between the two colors. On cut and stitched panels you feel the step where one piece of leather sits over the other, and you can see stitching along it. On a sprayed finish the boundary is perfectly smooth, because it is one surface with two colors on it.

It matters because a stitched seam holds and each leather ages independently, and a cobbler can restitch it. A sprayed edge chips, the boundary blurs, and on black against white there is nowhere for that to hide.

Wingtip, and what it does for a two tone

A wingtip has a toe cap sweeping back along both sides in a W, with perforation along the wing edge and a medallion punched into the toe.

On a spectator the wing gives the color boundary a curve to follow rather than one hard horizontal across the toe, which spreads the contrast along a longer line. On black and white that softening matters more than on any other pairing, because a straight boundary between maximum contrast colors is as graphic as footwear gets.

The gimping, the serrated finish along the wing edge, is also doing more work here: it is the last visual element before black becomes white, so a ragged gimp line is immediately visible in a way it would not be on a single color shoe.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.

Two leathers cut and stitched as separate panels, full brogue wing cap with a gimped edge and toe medallion, closed oxford lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's leather oxford shoes.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.

Because this is an oxford, instep height decides the fit. When laced, the facings should sit close but not touching. Wide apart means the shoe is too small across the instep and there is no correcting it afterwards; touching means it is too big.

Specific to a spectator: the color boundary sits on a seam, and a seam falling across the widest part of your foot creases hard in the first month, right along the line where black meets white. That is the most visible crease a shoe can have. If you have a wide forefoot, tell us and we will adjust the pattern rather than the size.

Order your true length and specify the width separately. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order.

What to wear them with

  • Strongest: a sharply cut suit in charcoal, mid gray or navy, where the shoe is the deliberate element.
  • Works: evening dressing short of black tie, and cream or stone pants with a dark jacket.
  • Avoid: brown or tan anything, daytime business, and any outfit with a second pattern or contrast. The shoe is already doing that job.

Keep the belt plain black and the socks dark and solid. Also in the range: the tan and white spectator, the easier daytime version, and the burgundy spectator wingtip oxford.

Care

Everything in the white panel section above applies, plus the usual brogue rule: clear the perforations with a horsehair brush before the cream sets, because cream dried in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation. On the white panel that is less visible; on the black it turns the medallion into gray dots.

Wax only the black areas, and only at the toe and heel counter where the leather does not flex. Keep wax entirely off the white, where it yellows. Cedar trees between wearings, dry naturally away from heat.

What to expect when you order

Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

Are black and white spectators harder to wear than tan and white?
Yes. Black and white is the maximum brightness contrast possible between two colors with no temperature relationship, so there is nothing to soften the join. Tan and white is a moderate contrast between two warm tones, which reads as one object with a pattern.

Where do black and white spectators work?
Evening events, jazz and swing dressing, a sharply cut suit where the shoe is meant to be the point, and performance. Not daytime business, not anywhere conservative, and not any outfit where you hoped the shoes would go unnoticed.

What is a spectator shoe?
A two tone shoe with the toe cap, heel counter and throat in a darker leather and the remaining panels in a lighter one. John Lobb say their firm made the first pair in 1868, built as sportswear for cricket and golf.

Why are they called co-respondent shoes?
Because in English divorce law the co-respondent was the third party named in an adultery case, and the flashy two tone shoe had become associated with that kind of man.

How do I stop the white panel going gray?
Two cloths and two brushes, kept physically apart. Work the white first while everything is clean, let it dry completely, then do the black. Black polish is the most mobile substance in shoe care and one careless pass leaves a gray cast along the boundary that does not come out.

Should I use white polish on the white panel?
No. Use a neutral cream. White pigment polish cakes in the seam and the perforations and dries chalky, which looks worse than a slightly aged white.

Is the white leather dyed or coated?
Check the flex crease on a worn panel. Dyed leather creases the same color, slightly deeper. A coated panel creases as a visibly darker line, because the film has thinned and the hide is showing through.

How do I tell cut and stitched panels from sprayed two tone?
Run a fingernail across the boundary. On cut and stitched panels you feel the step where one piece of leather sits over the other, and you can see stitching. A sprayed finish is perfectly smooth, because it is one surface with two colors on it.

Why a wingtip rather than a straight cap?
Because the wing gives the color boundary a curve to follow instead of one hard horizontal, which spreads the contrast along a longer line. On black and white that softening matters more than on any other pairing.

Can I wear these every day?
Better not. This is a shoe for occasions. Worn once a month and cleaned properly it stays sharp for years. Worn casually and cleaned in a hurry, the white goes gray at the boundary within a season.

Where should the color boundary sit on my foot?
Behind the widest part. The boundary sits on a seam, and a seam falling across the joint creases hard in the first month, right along the line where black meets white, which is the most visible crease a shoe can have.
