Purple chukka boots for men with closed oxford lacing, hand painted in layers and hand welted on a leather sole. Ankle-height shaft, made to order in your size and width.
An oxford chukka is a rare thing
Almost every chukka boot ever made is a derby. The definition of a chukka is an ankle boot with two or three eyelets and open lacing, where the quarters sit on top of the vamp and the whole instep falls away when you unlace it.
This one is an oxford. The quarters are stitched underneath the vamp, so the facings meet in a V and the instep presents an unbroken surface. It is a deliberate and unusual choice, and it is worth understanding what you gain and what you give up.
Open lacing vs closed lacing on a boot
| Chukka (derby lacing) | Oxford chukka (closed lacing) | |
|---|---|---|
| Quarters | Sit on top of the vamp | Stitched beneath the vamp |
| Line | Visible seam across the instep | Unbroken — sleeker and cleaner |
| Formality | Slightly casual | The more formal of the two |
| Adjustment | Opens wide; very forgiving | Facings meet and stop; limited |
| Getting it on | Easy — instep falls away | Narrower opening |
Compare the standard derby-laced versions in our leather boots, including the gray patina chukka boots and brown horse skin chukka boots.
Why the closed lacing changes the whole boot
The visual effect is the point. A derby chukka has a seam running across the instep where the quarters overlap the vamp, and that horizontal line breaks the boot into sections — it shortens the apparent length of the foot and reads as relaxed.
Closed lacing removes that break. The vamp runs continuously from the toe to the facings, so the eye travels the full length of the boot uninterrupted. On an ankle boot, which is already a compact shape, that continuity does a lot of work: it makes the boot look longer, lower and considerably more formal than its derby equivalent.
It also changes what the boot can be worn with. A derby chukka is a chinos-and-denim boot that stretches to tailoring. An oxford chukka is a tailoring boot that stretches down to denim. Same silhouette, opposite direction of travel.
Purple, and why patina makes it wearable
Purple is the most difficult colour in men's footwear, and a flat purple boot would be unwearable. There is a reason you rarely see one.
A single coat of purple dye reads as costume — the colour sits on the surface at uniform saturation, with no variation for the eye to rest on, and it looks synthetic even when it is not. That is what most purple footwear is, and it is why the colour has a poor reputation.
Layered patina solves it. The purple is built up in thin coats, each worked into the grain and burnished before the next goes on, and deepened at the toe, the heel and along the welt where a boot naturally shades. The result is a colour that shifts as light moves across it — near-black in the recesses and at the extremities, clear purple on the flat panels, with a wine or plum cast at the transitions.
What that gives you practically is a boot that reads as a deep, considered colour rather than as purple. From across a room it registers closer to a very dark burgundy. Up close the purple is unmistakable. That gap between the two is what makes it possible to wear.
See the same treatment on our purple patina wholecut and purple patina cross-stitched monkstrap.
Hand welted on a leather sole
The upper, insole and welt are stitched together by hand with no adhesive carrying the structure, and a maker spends the better part of a day per pair.
There is a reason it matters on a closed-laced boot specifically. Closed lacing means the quarters are stitched beneath the vamp, so the instep area carries a lapped seam that has to sit perfectly flat — any bulk there will press into the top of your foot every time you walk, and there is no lacing adjustment available to relieve it. Hand welting lets the maker set the tension across that seam deliberately rather than driving a machine's uniform pressure through it.
The boot is fully resoleable, repeatedly. A leather sole in wet or icy conditions wants a thin rubber topy added by a cobbler, which does not affect that.
How to wear a purple boot
Be clear-eyed about this: it is a statement boot. It will not read as neutral and it should not be your only pair.
The colours that work are the cool neutrals. Charcoal and mid-grey are the strongest — grey has no hue of its own to argue with the purple, so the pairing reads as deliberate. Black trousers work, which is unusual and useful. Dark denim works. Stone and cream work in a smart-casual register.
The colours to avoid: brown in any tone, which fights purple without either winning; navy, which sits close enough to purple to look like a failed match rather than a contrast; and olive or any warm earth tone.
Keep everything else completely plain. No pattern, no second point of interest, no brown accessories. Black belt, steel or silver hardware rather than brass — warm metal against purple reads badly. Keep the trouser hem short enough that the boot is visibly a boot; no break or a slight break. Browse all oxford shoes for the closed-lacing shoe equivalents.
Sizing: this is the least forgiving fit we make
Worth reading properly, because this boot combines two constraints that no other style in our range does at once.
Closed lacing gives you limited adjustment. The facings meet and stop, so if the boot is tight across the instep there is nothing to let out — unlike a derby chukka, where unlacing opens the whole instep. And a boot has more upper to get your foot past than a shoe does, so the narrower opening created by closed lacing makes entry harder as well.
Three specifics as a result. First, if you have a high arch or a thick instep, tell us before ordering — this may not be the right boot for you, and we would rather say so than sell you one. A derby chukka in the same leather will serve you better. Second, order your true width and go wider if you are between sizes; there is no recovering from a narrow fit here. Third, a boot wants slightly more toe room than a shoe, because your foot slides forward more when the ankle is held.
We make D, E, EE and EEE. Check the size guide, and please send your measurements through contact before ordering this particular style rather than ordering blind.
Caring for purple patina
Neutral cream only, and this matters more here than on any other colour we make.
There is no purple shoe polish that will match a layered patina. Purple pigments vary enormously between products and almost all of them lean either too blue or too red — applying one will not top up the colour, it will lay a different purple over the top and flatten the tonal gradation that makes the boot wearable in the first place. Once that gradation is levelled it does not come back.
Brush with horsehair after each wear, working along the direction of the shading rather than across it, so you are not dragging pigment from the dark extremities into the lighter panels. Condition two or three times a year, sparingly.
Purple is also more UV-sensitive than brown or black. The pigments that produce it fade at different rates in sunlight, which can push the colour toward grey or brown rather than simply lightening it. Store these away from windows and out of direct sun — more deliberately than you would a brown boot.
Cedar trees between wearings, and rest them a day between outings.
What to expect when you order
Painted and built after you order, not pulled from a shelf. Tell us your size, width and eyelet preference and we make the pair. Because the patina is laid by hand, no two pairs shade identically — that is a property of the process rather than a fault. We confirm your timeline by email before starting work, and we ship worldwide. Full details are in shipping and returns, or browse new arrivals.
Frequently asked questions
What is an oxford chukka? An ankle boot with closed lacing — the quarters stitched beneath the vamp rather than on top of it. Almost all chukkas are derbies, so this is unusual.
How is it different from a normal chukka? Cleaner line, more formal, and noticeably less adjustment across the instep.
Is the purple painted or dyed? Hand painted in thin layers and burnished between coats, then deepened at the toe, heel and welt. It is not a single-coat dye.
Is purple actually wearable? With cool neutrals, yes — charcoal, grey, black, dark denim. Avoid brown, navy and warm earth tones entirely.
Will the colour fade? Not with neutral cream and normal wear. Prolonged direct sunlight is the real risk, since purple pigments fade unevenly.
Can I use purple polish? No. There is no purple polish that matches a layered patina, and applying one flattens the shading permanently.
I have a high instep — will these fit? Possibly not. Message us first; a derby-laced chukka will likely suit you better.
Are both boots identical in colour? Close, not exact. A hand-laid patina varies slightly pair to pair.
Can these be resoled? Yes, repeatedly. Hand welted construction means any competent cobbler can rebuild them.
Do you make wide widths? Yes, up to EEE, made to order — and go wider rather than narrower on this style.
