Men's Black Wingtip Boots
5.0 / 5 (2 reviews)Product Details
Men's black wingtip boots in full grain calf, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. A dress boot answers a question a dress shoe cannot, and a brogue pattern on a boot behaves differently from the same pattern on an oxford. Both are worth understanding before you buy.
When a dress boot beats a dress shoe
People think of a boot as the casual option. On a black calf dress boot the opposite is closer to true, and the reason is the ankle.
A shoe stops below the ankle bone, so the hem of your pant has to reach it or you get a gap. A boot covers the ankle, which means:
- It works when you sit down. Pants ride up when you sit or cross your legs, and a boot covers what a shoe exposes. Across a long day of meetings that is not a small thing.
- It handles weather a shoe does not. Not because the leather is different, but because the opening sits higher off the ground and water has further to travel to get in.
- It holds your ankle. A laced boot supports the joint in a way a shoe cannot, which matters on cobbles, stairs and long days standing.
What you give up is a step of formality and a little comfort in summer. A black dress boot will not go to black tie, but it goes almost everywhere else a black shoe goes.
Broguing on a boot, and why it is not the same as on a shoe
A wingtip has a toe cap that sweeps back along both sides in a W, with perforation along the wing edge and a medallion punched into the toe. On an oxford the wing points run back toward the heel and stop.
On a boot the same pattern has more upper above it, which changes two things.
The wing has somewhere to go. On a shoe the wing terminates near the quarter seam. On a boot the pattern can continue up into the facings and the topline, so a well drafted wingtip boot carries its perforation upward rather than stopping abruptly halfway. Look at where the broguing ends: if it stops at the point it would on a shoe and the shaft above is blank, the pattern was lifted from a shoe last and pasted onto a taller upper.
The ankle flexes harder than a vamp. A shoe bends in one place, at the ball. A boot bends at the ball and at the ankle, and perforation is by definition a line of weak points in the leather. A brogued boot therefore has to keep its perforated seams away from the hardest working fold, or the holes elongate into slots over years.
There is a small historical irony worth knowing. Broguing began as drainage, because brogues came from Ireland and Scotland as outdoor shoes for wet ground and the holes let water out. A brogued boot is the one place that original logic almost still applies, except that nobody wants a perforated boot in the rain, which tells you how completely the function became decoration.
Black, and what it demands of the making
Black absorbs almost all the light that hits it, so a black boot reads as a silhouette rather than a surface. Two consequences:
- Every ripple in the lasting shows in the outline, with no grain or color depth to hide behind. A boot has more upper than a shoe, so there is more surface to get wrong.
- The broguing has to work harder. Perforation is read as shadow, and on black the hole and the leather around it tend toward the same dark. A clean punch with a finished rim, on leather that takes a shine, is what keeps the pattern readable.
Full grain, top grain, genuine leather
- Full grain keeps the complete outer surface of the hide, so the tightest fibers are still there. A punched perforation keeps a clean rim for the life of the boot and the leather takes a shine.
- Top grain has been sanded to remove scars then coated or embossed. Holes fur up at the rim and the coating cracks at the flex line.
- Genuine leather is the lowest grade sold despite the name.
On a boot this matters most at the ankle, which flexes hardest and is also where a coated finish cracks first. Look at the crease across the ankle on any worn brogue boot: on full grain the crease is leather, on a coated hide it is a pale broken line.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the upper. That matters more on a boot than on a shoe, because there is more upper and it will outlast several soles. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.
Full grain calf upper, full brogue wing cap with a gimped edge and toe medallion, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's boots.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.
The cap seam should sit behind the widest part of your foot, not across it. A seam running over the joint creases hard in the first month, and a creased perforated seam does not recover because the holes take the fold. If you have a wide forefoot, tell us and we will adjust the pattern rather than the size.
Do not size up to gain room across the ball. A boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front, which is the most common complaint about boots that are otherwise well made. Order your true length and specify the width separately.
Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you have a high instep, a wide forefoot or are between widths.
What to wear them with
- Strongest: charcoal and mid gray flannel, navy, with the pant breaking over the boot rather than tucked.
- Works: dark denim, gray and stone chinos, tweed and heavier odd jackets, which is where a brogue historically belongs.
- Avoid: brown or tan tailoring, which fights black; black tie; and a slim leg that has to be forced over the shaft, which bunches at the ankle.
Keep the belt black and plain. Also in the range: the brown wingtip boots and the black wingtip oxford, the shoe version of the same pattern.
Care
Cream first, then wax on the toe cap and heel counter, the two areas that do not flex.
- Brush the perforations out before the cream sets. Cream left to dry in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation, which against black turns the medallion into gray dots.
- Cream the shaft as well as the vamp. The vamp gets attention because it is what you see looking down; the shaft dries out unnoticed and a dry shaft cracks at the ankle fold.
- Keep wax off the ankle flex entirely, which on a boot is the hardest working fold on the whole thing.
- Use boot trees or stuff the shaft, so it does not fold permanently at the ankle.
Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, dry naturally away from heat.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
When is a dress boot better than a dress shoe?
When you sit a lot, because pants ride up when you sit or cross your legs and a boot covers what a shoe exposes. It also handles weather better, since the opening sits higher off the ground, and it supports the ankle on cobbles, stairs and long days standing.
What is a wingtip?
A toe cap that sweeps back along both sides in a W, with perforation along the wing edge and a medallion punched into the toe. Also called a full brogue.
How is broguing on a boot different from on a shoe?
The pattern has more upper above it, so on a well drafted boot the perforation continues into the facings and topline rather than stopping where it would on a shoe. If the broguing stops halfway up and the shaft above it is blank, the pattern was lifted from a shoe last.
Does broguing weaken a boot?
Perforation is a line of weak points by definition, and a boot flexes at the ankle as well as the ball. A well made brogue boot keeps its perforated seams away from the hardest working fold, or the holes elongate into slots over years.
Why do brogues have holes?
They were drainage. Brogues came from Ireland and Scotland as outdoor shoes for wet ground and the perforations let water out. Nobody wants a perforated boot in the rain now, which tells you how completely the function became decoration.
Why does black demand more of the making?
Because it absorbs almost all the light, so a black boot reads as a silhouette and every ripple in the lasting shows in the outline. A boot has more upper than a shoe, so there is more surface to get wrong.
How can I tell if a brogue boot uses good leather?
Look at the crease across the ankle on a worn pair. On full grain the crease is leather. On a coated or corrected hide it is a pale broken line, because the finish has cracked where the boot flexes hardest.
Where should the cap seam sit?
Behind the widest part of your foot, not across it. A seam running over the joint creases hard in the first month, and a creased perforated seam does not recover because the holes take the fold.
What size should I order?
Your true length with the width specified separately. Do not size up to gain room across the ball, because a boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front.
How do I stop cream drying white in the perforations?
Brush the holes out with a horsehair brush before the cream sets, not after. Cream left to dry in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation, which against black turns the medallion into gray dots.
Which part of a boot gets neglected?
The shaft. The vamp gets polished because it is what you see looking down, and the shaft dries out unnoticed. A dry shaft cracks at the ankle fold, so cream the whole boot every four to six wears.
