Men's Chocolate Brown Wingtip Boots
4.33 / 5 (3 reviews)Product Details
Men's chocolate brown wingtip boots in full grain calf with full brogue detailing, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. A brogue boot is the most useful dress boot most men can own, and this page explains both why that is and what to check before buying one.
Why a brown brogue boot is the most useful dress boot
Three things stack here and they all point the same way.
- A boot covers the ankle. Pants ride up when you sit or cross your legs, and a boot covers what a shoe exposes. It also puts the opening higher off the ground in bad weather and supports the joint on cobbles and stairs.
- Broguing reads country. Perforation came from Ireland and Scotland as drainage on outdoor shoes for wet ground, and a century later it still reads as rural rather than urban, which is exactly the register a boot wants.
- Brown carries texture. Brown has depth, so it sits with tweed, flannel, moleskin and denim in a way black never does.
Put together, a brown brogue boot goes with more of a normal wardrobe than any other dress boot. A black brogue boot is sharper and narrower. A plain brown boot is quieter and less interesting. This is the middle that most people actually wear.
Broguing on a boot is not the same as on a shoe
A wingtip has a toe cap that sweeps back along both sides in a W, with perforation along the wing edge and a medallion punched into the toe.
The wing has somewhere to go. On a shoe the wing terminates near the quarter seam and the pattern stops there. On a boot there is more upper above it, so a well drafted wingtip boot carries its perforation up into the facings and the topline. Look at where the broguing ends: if it stops where it would on a shoe and the shaft above it is blank, the pattern was lifted from a shoe last and pasted onto a taller upper.
The ankle flexes harder than a vamp. A shoe bends in one place, at the ball. A boot bends at the ball and at the ankle, and perforation is by definition a line of weak points. A well made brogue boot keeps its perforated seams clear of the hardest working fold, or the holes elongate into slots over years.
Why brown shows broguing better than black
Broguing is read by the eye as shadow, not as holes. Each perforation is a small dark point against the leather around it, and the medallion is a pattern made of those points.
Black absorbs almost all the light that hits it, so on black the hole and the surface around it tend toward the same dark and the pattern flattens unless the punch is very clean and the leather takes a high shine.
Chocolate brown has enough brightness in it that every perforation casts a readable shadow, at any distance and in any light. It is also the color that gains most from polishing: the toe and heel darken over years while the flex points stay lighter, and on a brogue that uneven depth makes the perforation pattern more legible rather than less.
Full grain, top grain, genuine leather
- Full grain keeps the complete outer surface of the hide with nothing sanded off. The fibers there are the tightest in the hide, so a punched perforation keeps a clean rim for the life of the boot and the leather develops a patina rather than wearing through.
- Top grain has been sanded to remove scars, then coated or embossed. Holes fur up at the rim within a couple of years and the medallion softens into vague dents.
- Genuine leather is the lowest grade sold despite the name.
Two checks that take seconds. Look at the inside rim of a perforation: on full grain you see leather fiber, on a coated hide you can often see the coating broken at the rim. And look at the crease across the ankle on a worn pair: on full grain the crease is leather, on a coated hide it is a pale broken line.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the upper. That matters more on a boot than on a shoe, because there is more upper and it will outlast several soles. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and compresses to your foot across the first month.
Full grain calf upper, full brogue wing cap with a gimped edge and toe medallion, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's brogues and men's boots.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.
The cap seam should sit behind the widest part of your foot, not across it. A seam running over the joint creases hard in the first month, and on a brogue that crease runs through a line of perforations, which do not recover once folded. If you have a wide forefoot, tell us and we will adjust the pattern rather than the size.
Do not size up to gain room across the ball. A boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front, which is the most common complaint about boots that are otherwise well made. Order your true length and specify the width separately.
Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you have a high instep, a wide forefoot or are between widths.
What to wear them with
- Strongest: tweed, moleskin, corduroy and gray flannel, which is where a brogue historically belongs.
- Works: mid and charcoal gray, navy, olive and brown tailoring, dark denim, heavy chinos.
- Avoid: black tailoring, which fights brown at every depth; a formal business suit in smooth worsted; and a slim leg forced over the shaft, which bunches at the ankle.
Wear the pant breaking over the boot rather than tucked. Match your belt to the depth of the brown. Also in the range: the black wingtip boots and the mahogany wingtip oxford, the shoe version of the pattern.
Care
Cream first, then wax on the toe cap and heel counter, the two areas that do not flex.
- Clear the perforations before the cream sets. Cream left to dry in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation in a lighter tone, which turns the medallion into a set of dots. Brush them out with a horsehair brush while the cream is still wet, not after.
- Cream the shaft as well as the vamp. The vamp gets attention because it is what you see looking down; the shaft dries out unnoticed and a dry shaft cracks at the ankle fold.
- Keep wax off the ankle flex entirely, which on a boot is the hardest working fold on the whole thing.
- Use a brown cream a shade lighter than the boot, so years of polishing deepen the color rather than flattening it.
- Boot trees or stuffed shafts, so the shaft does not fold permanently at the ankle.
Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, dry naturally away from heat.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Full grain calf varies in depth hide to hide, so your pair will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
Why is a brown brogue boot the most useful dress boot?
Three things stack. A boot covers the ankle, which matters when pants ride up as you sit. Broguing reads country rather than town, which suits a boot. And brown has depth, so it sits with tweed, flannel, moleskin and denim in a way black never does.
What is a wingtip?
A toe cap that sweeps back along both sides in a W, with perforation along the wing edge and a medallion punched into the toe. Also called a full brogue.
How is broguing on a boot different from on a shoe?
The pattern has more upper above it, so a well drafted boot carries its perforation up into the facings and topline. If the broguing stops where it would on a shoe and the shaft above it is blank, the pattern was lifted from a shoe last.
Does broguing weaken a boot?
Perforation is a line of weak points by definition, and a boot flexes at the ankle as well as the ball. A well made brogue boot keeps its perforated seams clear of the hardest working fold, or the holes elongate into slots over years.
Why does broguing show better on brown than on black?
Because broguing is read as shadow. Black absorbs almost all the light, so the hole and the surface around it tend toward the same dark. Chocolate brown has enough brightness for every perforation to cast a readable shadow at any distance.
Why do brogues have holes?
They were drainage. Brogues came from Ireland and Scotland as outdoor shoes for wet ground and the perforations let water out. The function has been gone for a century, which is why broguing still reads as country rather than town.
How can I tell if a brogue boot uses good leather?
Two checks. Look at the inside rim of a perforation: on full grain you see leather fiber, on a coated hide the coating is broken at the rim. And look at the crease across the ankle on a worn pair: on full grain it is leather, on a coated hide it is a pale broken line.
Where should the cap seam sit?
Behind the widest part of your foot, not across it. A seam running over the joint creases hard in the first month, and on a brogue that crease runs through a line of perforations, which do not recover once folded.
What size should I order?
Your true length with the width specified separately. Do not size up to gain room across the ball, because a boot that is too long slides forward on any decline and your toes meet the front.
How do I stop cream drying pale in the perforations?
Brush them out with a horsehair brush while the cream is still wet, not after. Cream left to harden in a hole goes pale and outlines every perforation, turning the medallion into a set of dots.
What cream should I use on chocolate brown?
One a shade lighter than the boot. That way years of polishing deepen the color rather than flattening it, and the toe and heel darken while the flex points stay lighter, which is what makes a brown brogue look better with age.
