What "woven" means here, and what it doesn't

Worth clearing up first, because the word covers two entirely different things.

Most footwear sold as woven is textile, knit fabric, canvas, or a synthetic mesh upper. Those boots are cheap to make, breathable, and disposable. Nothing about them involves weaving in the sense used here.

These are woven leather. Calf hide is cut into narrow strips and those strips are interlaced by hand into a basket weave, so the upper is a genuine lattice of separate leather pieces rather than a printed or knitted surface. It is a leatherworking technique, not a textile one, and it takes considerably longer than cutting a solid panel.

Basket weave, intrecciato, and hand weaving

Basket weave describes the pattern: strips running in two directions, each passing alternately over and under the ones it crosses, exactly like a woven basket. The Italian term is intrecciato, from intrecciare, to interlace, and it is the word the Italian leather houses use for the same technique.

The work sits in the preparation as much as the weaving. Every strip has to be cut to a consistent width, because a strip that runs even slightly wide or narrow throws the alignment of the whole panel and there is no way to correct it afterwards. The strips are then skived, thinned at the edges, so that where they cross, the doubled thickness does not create a ridge you can feel through the boot.

Then it is woven by hand at even tension. Too loose and the weave opens into gaps and sags in wear. Too tight and the strips buckle and the surface ripples. Getting a whole boot upper consistent takes a maker most of a day before any lasting or welting begins.

How to tell a real weave from an embossed one

A great many "woven" leather shoes are not woven at all. A basket weave pattern is pressed into a solid panel of leather with a heated die, which takes seconds and costs almost nothing. From a listing photograph the two are difficult to separate, so here is what to look for.

On a genuine weave, each strip has two visible cut edges running along its length, and where strips cross you can see one passing physically behind the other with a real change in depth. The pattern also breaks at the seams, because the weave is built as a panel, it cannot continue perfectly around a corner, and an honest maker lets it terminate cleanly rather than pretending otherwise.

On an embossed panel, the surface is continuous. There are no cut edges, the crossings are shallow impressions with no genuine over-and-under, and the pattern runs seamlessly around curves in a way real weaving cannot. Look at the boot's edge where the upper meets the welt: a woven upper shows the ends of individual strips, an embossed one shows a single unbroken edge.

Why woven leather breathes

A weave has interstices, small openings where four strips meet, and those let air move through the upper in a way a solid panel cannot. It is the one construction that makes a leather boot genuinely wearable in warm weather.

That is not a marketing point, it is the historical reason the technique exists. Woven leather footwear developed in hot climates because it gave you the structure and longevity of leather with airflow closer to a sandal. The structural problem, and how it's solved

A woven upper has no continuous panel anywhere in it, which creates a real engineering problem. Solid leather resists distortion because the fibres run through the whole piece. A lattice of strips has no such continuity, pull on it and it racks diagonally, like a garden trellis, and once it has racked it does not come back.

Two things prevent that. The weave is built over a backing so the lattice is supported rather than free-standing, and the perimeter is bound into the seams and the welt so the edges cannot creep. Skip either and the boot will look correct in the box and distorted within a season, the toe will pull out of square and the strips will start to gape unevenly.

It is also why a woven boot needs proper lasting rather than being pulled tight over a form. The tension has to be set across the whole weave at once, evenly, which is what hand work allows and machine lasting does not.

Are woven boots waterproof?

No, and any seller telling you otherwise is not being straight with you.

The interstices that make a woven boot breathe are openings, and water goes through openings. There is a lining behind the weave, so the boot is not a sieve and light rain will not soak your foot immediately, but this is not wet-weather footwear and treating it as such will ruin it. Water sitting between the weave and the lining is slow to dry, and repeated soaking will stiffen the strips and eventually crack the edges.

Treat these as a dry-weather and warm-weather boot. Spray them with a leather protector before first wear, and keep a solid-panel boot for bad days.

Goodyear welted on a leather sole

On a woven boot Goodyear welting does something specific. The welt is where the perimeter of the weave gets locked down, and a hand-stitched welt lets the maker catch the strip ends individually and set the tension where each one needs it. A machine welt applies uniform pressure all the way round, which on a lattice means some strips end up slack and others overtight. The boot is also fully resoleable, so it has no fixed lifespan, which matters on something this labour-intensive.

What to wear them with

A woven boot is a texture piece, and black keeps it wearable where a lighter weave would read as novelty. It sits in smart casual and warm-weather formal, not business formal, because the open surface reads too relaxed against worsted suiting.

It works with charcoal and mid-gray pants, with stone and olive chinos, with linen in summer, and with dark denim. Keep the rest of the outfit completely plain: the weave is already the pattern, and anything else competes with it. Black belt, and match the hardware to your watch rather than to the boot.

Sizing: a woven upper fits differently

The thing to understand is how a weave gives. Solid leather stretches slowly and mainly across the width. A weave has almost no stretch along the direction of the strips, but it can shift diagonally, on the bias, which means a woven boot that is slightly too narrow will not stretch outward, it will rack and distort instead. You get a boot that is still too narrow and now also out of shape.

Cleaning between the strips

The weave collects dust in the interstices, and that is where the maintenance goes.

Use a soft brush in short strokes rather than long sweeps, working diagonally across the weave so the bristles reach into the openings instead of skating over the top. A long stroke along the strips just pushes dirt further in. An old toothbrush is genuinely the right tool for the crossings.

Neutral cream on the strips themselves, applied with a cloth and worked in lightly. Do not overload it, cream that collects in the interstices dries pale and turns a black weave gray along every crossing, which is difficult to reverse. Less product, more often, is the rule here.

Pay attention to the cut edges of the strips. Those are the most exposed part of the boot and the first place to dry out and stiffen, and a stiff strip edge is what eventually cracks. Condition two or three times a year with that specifically in mind.

Cedar trees between wearings to hold the shape, which matters more on a woven boot than a solid one. Rest them a day between outings.
