Navy blue suede oxford shoes for men in full calf suede, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Closed lacing, a stacked leather heel, and the one dress shoe color that does more work than people expect.

Where a navy suede oxford sits on the formality scale

Two things decide how formal a dress shoe is, and they pull in opposite directions on this one.

The lacing is the bigger factor. An oxford, also called a balmoral, has closed lacing: the quarters that carry the eyelets are stitched underneath the vamp so the throat closes into a clean line. That is the most formal lacing construction there is. A derby stitches those quarters on top instead, which opens wider and reads more casual.

The material pulls the other way. The accepted material order runs patent leather, then smooth calfskin, then suede and nubuck, then textile. Suede is a napped surface and a napped surface is inherently less dressy than a polished one.

So a suede oxford lands lower than a calf oxford but higher than any derby in the same leather. In practice that is business and smart casual territory. Navy helps rather than hurts, because it is dark enough to read as dressy, sitting between charcoal gray and mid brown among shoe colors.

What suede actually is, and the three grades sold under one word

Suede is the flesh side of the hide, the underside, buffed to raise a short fine nap. That is what this shoe is made from, in calf rather than cow, which gives a finer and tighter nap.

Nubuck is a different thing that looks similar. It is the grain side, the outer face of the hide, sanded lightly rather than buffed from beneath. It is tougher and copes with damp better, but it burnishes shiny where it flexes.

Split suede is the one to avoid. The hide is split into layers and the lower layers, which have none of the tight fiber structure of the top, are napped and sold as suede. It is considerably cheaper, the nap is coarse, and it wears thin at the flex point within a season. From a photograph all three look identical.

There is a test you can run in thirty seconds. Brush the nap one way, then against it. Real suede shifts tone noticeably because you are laying real fibers over and standing them back up. Synthetic suede effect microfiber barely changes, because the pile is uniform and machine made.

Why navy is the shoe color that gets underrated

Most men own black and brown and stop there. Navy solves a problem neither of them does.

Black is the most formal shoe color and the least flexible, because it only truly agrees with gray, charcoal and black. Brown is warm, which means it fights cool toned grays and never quite settles under black pants. Navy is dark enough to hold its own in a formal context, but it carries no warmth to clash with cool tailoring.

The pairing people hesitate over is navy shoes with a navy suit, and it works, so long as you are not trying to match the exact shade. A suede upper and a worsted suit reflect light completely differently, so the two tones separate on their own. Matching them precisely is what looks accidental.

What to wear them with

Navy suede sits comfortably with charcoal, mid gray and navy tailoring, with gray flannel pants, with stone and tan chinos, and with dark denim. It is one of the few colors that carries a suit on a weekday and jeans on a Saturday without looking like it is doing either grudgingly.

Keep the leather accessories in agreement. A navy or black belt, not brown, and match the watch strap rather than the shoe. Avoid it at black tie, at a funeral, and in a conservative legal or banking office, all three of which want plain polished black calf. Compare it against the rest of our men's oxford shoes, or see the same suede on an open laced boot in the navy blue suede chukka boots.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the shoe, which is what makes the shoe resoleable rather than disposable. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and compresses to the shape of your foot across the first month, then holds it.

Leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece for grip. Width cut to your measurement rather than a standard D, in D, E, EE or EEE, through our made to order service.

Fit and sizing

An oxford is the least forgiving dress shoe to fit, and that is a direct consequence of the closed lacing. The throat cannot open past what the pattern allows, so a high instep has to be caught in the size rather than adjusted for afterward. Laced correctly, the facings should sit roughly a thumb width apart. If they touch, the shoe is too big.

Suede gives slightly more than smooth calf across the first two weeks because the nap compresses, so order snug rather than comfortable on day one. Read the men's shoe size guide before ordering, or send your measurements through contact and we will confirm your fit before cutting.

Caring for navy suede

Suede is maintained by brushing, not polishing. Use a suede brush after every wear, working in one direction to lift the nap back up before it sets flat. A suede eraser or a crepe rubber block lifts dry marks and the shiny patches that form across the vamp crease.

Spray a protector before the first outing and a few times a season after that. Never use cream or wax, both mat the nap down into something closer to smooth leather and it cannot be reversed. If the shoes get soaked, stuff them with paper and dry them away from any heat source, then brush the nap back up once dry. Heat is what ruins wet suede, not water. Cedar trees between wears, and rest them a day between outings.

What to expect when you order

Every pair is cut and welted after you order rather than pulled from a shelf. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping. Suede is a natural material, so the depth of the nap varies slightly between hides and your pair will be very close to the photographs without being identical to them.

Questions we get asked

Are navy suede oxfords formal enough to wear with a suit?
With a navy, charcoal or mid gray suit, yes. Two things set a dress shoe's formality: the lacing and the material. Closed lacing is the most formal lacing there is, which works in this shoe's favor, while suede sits a step below smooth calfskin and pulls it back down. The result lands in business and smart casual rather than strict formal. For a black tie event or a conservative legal or banking office, a smooth black calf oxford is the correct shoe.

What is the difference between an oxford and a derby?
The lacing. On an oxford the quarters carrying the eyelets are stitched underneath the vamp, so the throat is closed and the shoe only opens so far. On a derby the quarters sit on top of the vamp and open wide. The oxford gives a sleeker line and reads more formal, the derby gives far more adjustment across the instep. An oxford is also called a balmoral.

Can you wear navy shoes with a navy suit?
Yes, and it is one of the easier pairings in menswear because navy is tonal rather than contrasting. The one thing to avoid is matching the exact shade, which reads as an accident. A navy suede shoe against a navy worsted suit works precisely because the nap and the cloth reflect light differently, so the tones separate naturally.

What is the difference between suede and nubuck?
Which side of the hide is used. Suede is the flesh side, the underside, buffed to raise a short fine nap. Nubuck is the grain side, the outer face, sanded lightly instead. Nubuck is tougher and handles damp better, suede is softer and finer. Split suede, cut from the lower layers of the hide, is the cheap version and wears thin quickly. This shoe uses full calf suede, not split.

Can suede shoes get wet?
They tolerate light rain if treated, but they are not wet weather shoes. Water darkens and spots the nap and salt leaves permanent marks. Spray a protector before first wear, and if the shoes do get soaked, stuff them with paper and let them dry away from any heat source. Heat is what ruins wet suede, not the water itself.

How do you clean navy suede shoes?
Brush with a suede brush after every wear, working in one direction to lift the nap. A suede eraser or a crepe rubber block lifts dry marks and shiny patches. Never use cream or wax polish, both mat the nap into something closer to leather and there is no undoing it.

Do navy suede oxfords work in the office?
In a business casual office, comfortably. Navy is described as relatively dressy among shoe colors because of how dark it is, and it sits between charcoal gray and mid brown on the formality scale. In a formal office that expects a black cap toe, this is the wrong shoe regardless of how well it is made.

How should an oxford fit?
Snug across the instep with the facings sitting roughly a thumb width apart when laced. If the facings touch, the shoe is too big. Closed lacing means the throat cannot open past what the pattern allows, so an oxford is the least forgiving dress shoe to fit and a high instep needs to be caught in the size rather than the width. Suede gives slightly more than smooth calf over the first two weeks.

Can these be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Goodyear welted construction means the outsole is stitched to a welt rather than glued to the upper, so a cobbler can replace it without disturbing the suede above it.

Do you make wide widths?
Yes. We cut D, E, EE and EEE to your measurement rather than working to one standard width, and every pair is made after you order.
