Product Details

Men's red penny loafers in crocodile leather, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Red plus an exotic hide is the loudest combination in this catalog, so the page is going to be straight with you about where it works, and about how to check any crocodile product is what the listing says.

Three ways to check crocodile is real

Type crocodile loafers into any marketplace and most of what comes back is cowhide with a pattern pressed into it under heat. These checks take under a minute in hand and they work on any product, not just ours.

  • Find the pore. Every genuine crocodilian scale carries a small sensory pit near one edge, where the animal sensed pressure changes in water. No embossing plate reproduces it, because it is a hole rather than a shape. You can often see it by zooming into a listing photograph.
  • Drag a fingernail across the tiles. Real scales are separate plates of keratin with genuine depth between them, so your nail catches at each edge. Embossed leather is one continuous pressed surface and your nail glides.
  • Look for repetition. A press plate repeats on a fixed interval, so the same cluster of tiles appears again further along the panel. A real hide grades continuously from larger belly tiles to smaller flank tiles and never repeats.

The labeling test matters as much as the physical one. "Genuine crocodile leather" claims the animal. "Genuine leather, crocodile print" claims only the leather, and the word order is chosen deliberately. Read it slowly before you read the price.

If you want to know exactly which hide is on a pair you are considering here, ask us before you order and we will tell you plainly. Our documented genuine crocodilian pieces are grouped in the exotic series.

Crocodile, alligator and caiman

Three animals are sold under names that sound interchangeable, and the price gap between them is large.

Animal How to identify it Where it sits
Crocodile Sensory pit on every scale, including belly tiles Premium, most uniform tiles
Alligator No sensory pits on the belly tiles at all Premium, very close in value
Caiman Bony plate inside most scales, hard to the touch, calcium creases Far cheaper, frequently sold as crocodile

Press a tile with a fingernail. Crocodile and alligator give slightly. Caiman is hard, because there is bone in it. Caiman is genuinely a crocodilian, so "genuine crocodile leather" is not technically false on a caiman product, which is exactly why the test matters.

Red on an exotic, and the honest answer

Crocodile is read by relief. The tiles catch light on top and the channels between them hold shadow, and that contrast is the entire visual effect. Color sits on top of that.

A dark hide hides its own pattern, because the tiles and channels go to the same dark and you need to be close to see what the shoe is made of. A red does the opposite: it keeps the tile faces bright, so the pattern reads clearly from a distance. That is the whole appeal and it is also the whole risk.

Where the line sits: a deep oxblood red behaves like a dark neutral with texture. A bright or cherry red on a crocodile hide is two loud things at once and it reads as costume, not as expensive. If you can name the color from across a room, the shoe is doing too much.

The rule that goes with it: the shoe is the exotic, so nothing else in the outfit should be. No exotic watch strap, no second textured leather, no pattern competing with the tiles, and nothing else red.

What makes a penny loafer well made

A saddle strap runs across the vamp with a slot cut through the middle. Three details separate a good one from a cheap one, and all three are visible in a photograph:

  • The saddle should be a separate piece stitched down at both ends, not glued on or stamped into the vamp. Those two stitch points take every bit of tension the strap ever sees.
  • The beef rolls, the raised stitched swellings where the saddle meets the sides, should be genuine rolls of leather rather than a decorative seam.
  • The slot edges should be finished and turned, not raw cut, because a raw edge is where the leather starts to stretch.

On a textured hide there is a fourth thing to look at: whether the tile pattern runs continuously across the saddle and the vamp or stops at the seam. On a well cut pair the panels are taken from the same area of hide so the scale sizes agree across the join. On a careless one the saddle comes from a different part of the skin and the tile sizes jump at the seam.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the shoe resoles repeatedly without disturbing the hide above it. On an exotic that is most of the value, since the upper will outlast several soles.

Crocodile upper, stitched saddle with beef rolls and finished slot edges, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's leather loafers.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.

Two things stack here and both push in the same direction.

A loafer has no lacing. Only the throat line and the heel counter hold your foot, so a shoe even slightly too long slips at the heel at every step, and no amount of breaking in fixes it. Loafers also run large relative to lace ups on the same last, so most people take less than their lace up size.

Crocodile barely stretches. The tiles have almost no give and only the narrow channels between them flex, so the shoe will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want on day one rather than one you plan to break into.

Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you are between widths or get heel slip in loafers generally.

What to wear them with

  • Strongest: charcoal and mid gray, where a neutral lets the shoe carry the whole thing.
  • Works: navy with enough separation in depth, dark denim.
  • Avoid: brown or tan tailoring, which fights the red; black, which flattens it; and a formal business suit, where an exotic in a warm color is too much.

Match your belt to plain black or dark brown smooth calf, not to an exotic. Two exotic pieces bought separately are different hides and will nearly agree, which looks worse than not matching at all. Also in the range: the black crocodile loafers and the burgundy crocodile grain penny loafers.

Care

  • No wax polish. It fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale in a lighter tone. Against red that pale residue reads as chalk and clearing it out without damaging a tile edge is close to impossible.
  • No brushing. A stiff brush catches the tile edges and lifts them.
  • Do this instead: wipe with a soft damp cloth and use a conditioner made for exotic leathers two or three times a year, applied thinly and buffed off.
  • Keep them out of direct sunlight. UV lifts a warm color faster than a dark one, and on a hide the fading shows first on the tile faces while the channels hold their color, which exaggerates the outlined look.
  • Never kick loafers off with your other foot, which creases the heel counter permanently.

Cedar trees between wearings and a day of rest between wears.

What to expect when you order

Cut after you order from a selected skin. Every hide is patterned differently, so the tile layout on your pair will be close to the photographs rather than a copy of them. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

How do I check crocodile is genuine?
Three ways. Find the small sensory pit near the edge of each scale, which no embossing plate reproduces because it is a hole rather than a shape. Drag a fingernail across the tiles, which catches on a real hide and glides on embossed leather. And look for repetition, since a press plate repeats on a fixed interval and an animal never does.

What does "genuine leather, crocodile print" mean?
Cowhide with a pattern pressed into it. Only "genuine crocodile leather" claims the animal. The word order is chosen deliberately, so read it slowly before you read the price.

What is the difference between crocodile, alligator and caiman?
Crocodile has a sensory pit on every scale including the belly. Alligator has none on the belly. Caiman has a bony plate inside most scales, so the tiles feel hard and show calcium creases, and it costs far less while still technically being a crocodilian. Press a tile: crocodile and alligator give slightly, caiman is hard.

Is red too loud on a crocodile shoe?
It depends on depth. A deep oxblood red behaves like a dark neutral with texture. A bright or cherry red on a crocodile hide is two loud things at once and reads as costume rather than expensive. If you can name the color from across a room, the shoe is doing too much.

Why does color matter more on an exotic than on calf?
Because crocodile is read by relief, with the tiles catching light and the channels holding shadow. A dark hide hides its own pattern. A warm bright color keeps the tile faces bright, so the pattern reads from a distance, which is both the appeal and the risk.

What should I check on a textured penny loafer?
The usual three, plus one. The saddle should be stitched down at both ends rather than glued, the beef rolls should be genuine rolls of leather, and the slot edges should be finished. On an exotic, also check whether the tile sizes agree across the saddle seam, because a careless cut takes the saddle from a different part of the skin.

Does crocodile stretch or break in?
Barely. The tiles have almost no give and only the narrow channels between them flex, so the shoe will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for. Order the fit you want on day one.

Do loafers run large?
Yes, relative to lace ups on the same last, so most people take less than their lace up size. With no lacing, only the throat line and the heel counter hold your foot, so a shoe even slightly too long slips at every step.

Can I polish crocodile with wax?
No. Wax fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale, and against red that residue reads as chalk. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and use an exotic leather conditioner two or three times a year.

Does sunlight matter on a red exotic?
Yes, more than on a dark one. UV lifts a warm color faster, and on a hide the fading shows first on the tile faces while the channels hold their color, which exaggerates the outlined look.

Can these be resoled?
Yes, repeatedly. Goodyear welted construction stitches the outsole to a welt rather than gluing it to the upper, so the sole is replaced without disturbing the hide above it.
