What Makes a Good Men's Leather Belt?
A belt looks simple, but the leather and the build decide whether it lasts one year or ten. Look for these four things:
- Solid leather: a strap cut from real hide, not layers of bonded scraps glued together.
- Finished edges: sealed and burnished edges that will not fray or split.
- A solid buckle: metal that will not bend, chip or lose its plating.
- The right size: a belt made to your waist so the buckle sits on the middle hole.
Full Grain vs Genuine vs Bonded Leather
Belt labels can be confusing. "Genuine leather" sounds premium but is often a lower grade. This is how the common terms compare.
| Leather type | What it is | How it ages |
|---|---|---|
| Full grain | The strongest outer layer of the hide | Develops character and lasts for years |
| Top grain | Outer layer, lightly sanded | Durable, more uniform look |
| Genuine leather | Lower layers of the hide | Wears faster, can stretch |
| Bonded leather | Leather scraps glued with a coating | Peels and cracks within a year or two |

How to Choose Your Belt Size
Belt size is not the same as your trouser size. Follow these steps for a correct fit:
- Check your trouser waist size, or measure around your waist where you wear your belt.
- Add about two inches; a 34 inch waist usually takes a 36 inch belt.
- Or measure a belt that fits well, from the buckle to the hole you use most.
- Make sure the buckle will sit on the middle hole when fastened.
Should Your Belt Match Your Shoes?
For dress and business outfits, match leather color and finish: black with black, brown with brown, croc pattern with textured shoes. Our belts are cut from the same leathers as our oxford shoes, loafers and exotic shoes, so you can order a matching pair.
If you only own one belt, choose dark brown. It works with brown and burgundy shoes, chinos and jeans, and looks right with navy and grey suits. Add black next for formal business wear and evening events.
Dress Belts vs Casual Belts
Choose the width by the trousers you wear most.
| Dress belt | Casual belt | |
|---|---|---|
| Width | About 1 to 1.25 inches | About 1.5 inches and up |
| Buckle | Slim and polished | Bolder, larger |
| Wear with | Suits and dress trousers | Jeans and chinos |
To keep any leather belt from cracking, rotate it with another belt, store it flat or loosely rolled and condition it every few months.
FAQs
What size leather belt should I buy?
Most men should order a belt about two inches longer than their trouser waist size, so a 34 inch waist usually takes a 36 inch belt. The extra length allows the strap to pass through the buckle and keeper. When fastened, the buckle should sit on the middle hole, leaving room to loosen or tighten. Because our belts are made to order, you can also send the measurement of a belt that already fits you well, from the buckle to the hole you use most.
Should my belt match my shoes?
For dress and business outfits, yes. A black belt goes with black shoes and a brown belt with brown shoes, ideally in a similar shade and finish. With smart casual outfits you have more freedom, but a close match still makes an outfit look deliberate. The easiest way to get it right is to buy the belt and shoes in the same leather, which is why we cut our belts from the same hides as our shoes and can pair them before cutting.
What width should a men's dress belt be?
A dress belt is usually between 1 and 1.25 inches wide, with a slim buckle that sits neatly under a jacket. Business casual belts often go up to about 1.5 inches, and casual belts for jeans can be wider with a bolder buckle. The width should also suit your trouser loops: a belt that is too wide will not fit dress trousers, and one that is too narrow can look lost on jeans.
Is a croc embossed belt real leather?
Yes. A croc embossed belt is real calf leather with a crocodile scale pattern pressed into the surface under heat and pressure. It is not genuine crocodile skin, which has natural, irregular scales and costs far more. Embossed calf gives the same textured look from a normal distance, is flexible and easy to care for, and pairs well with crocodile or textured shoes. Our croc pattern belts are clearly listed as embossed calf.
Why do leather belts crack?
Leather belts crack when the leather dries out or is stressed in the same place every day. Common causes are heat and direct sun, wearing one belt daily without rest, storing it tightly curled or hanging by the buckle, and using household cleaners that strip natural oils. Cheap bonded or synthetic belts also peel within a year or two. Rotate your belts, store them flat or loosely rolled, and condition the leather every few months.
