Men's black crocodile chukka boots in genuine hide, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Before you buy any crocodile product it is worth knowing that three different animals are sold under names that sound interchangeable, and the price gap between them is enormous.

Crocodile, alligator and caiman

This is the distinction that most affects what you pay and the one least often explained.

Animal How to identify it Where it sits
Crocodile Sensory pit on every scale, including belly tiles Premium. Softest and most uniform tiles
Alligator No sensory pits on the belly tiles at all Premium, very close to crocodile in value
Caiman Bony plate inside most scales, so tiles feel hard and often show calcium creases Far cheaper. Frequently sold as "crocodile"

Caiman is the one to watch. It is a genuine crocodilian, so a seller calling it "genuine crocodile leather" is not technically lying, but the hide is a different material to work with: the bony plate inside each scale makes it stiff, it creases rather than flexing, and it costs a fraction of true crocodile. The way to tell is to press a tile with a fingernail. Crocodile and alligator tiles give slightly. Caiman tiles are hard, because there is bone in them.

The second check is the sensory pit, the small dot near the edge of each scale. Crocodile has one on every scale. Alligator has none on the belly. Caiman has them irregularly and the tiles around them are visibly ridged.

Is it real hide at all

Separately from which animal, there is the question of whether it is an animal.

Tile edges. On a real hide the scales are separate plates with genuine depth between them, so a fingernail dragged across catches at each edge. Embossed cowhide is one continuous pressed surface and your nail glides.

Repetition. An embossing plate repeats on a fixed interval, so the same cluster of tiles appears again further along the panel. A real hide grades continuously and never repeats.

The inside. On a genuine hide the flesh side shows the tile structure faintly as a shadow of the pattern. On embossed leather the back is completely uniform, because the pattern is only on the surface.

Why an exotic chukka is a different proposition

Most crocodile in menswear goes onto dress shoes and loafers. A chukka is unusual, and it changes what the hide has to do.

A chukka is an ankle height boot with two or three eyelets and open derby lacing. That means the upper wraps the ankle, and the ankle is the part of your foot that moves most. Crocodile tiles do not flex; only the channels between them do. On a loafer the hide only has to bend at the ball of the foot. On a chukka it has to bend at the ball and at the ankle, and the tile layout has to be planned so that the channels fall where the boot creases rather than the tiles.

Get that wrong and the boot develops a hard fold across the tiles at the ankle within a season, and a folded crocodile tile does not recover. It is the main reason exotic boots cost more than exotic shoes in the same hide.

Black on an exotic

Crocodile is read by relief rather than by color: the tiles catch light, the channels between them hold shadow, and that contrast is the whole visual effect.

Black absorbs almost all the light that hits it, so a poorly finished black croc loses its own pattern and reads as vaguely textured black leather. The fix is in the finish, not the dye. The tile faces need enough sheen to return light while the channels stay matte, so the contrast comes from surface rather than color. Done properly the boot reads as plain dark footwear from across a room and shows the hide clearly up close, which is exactly the right behavior for an exotic in black.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the hide above it. On an exotic that is most of the value, since the hide will outlast several soles.

Genuine crocodile upper, open derby lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. CITES documentation available on request. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. More exotics in the exotic series.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

Crocodile barely stretches, which makes fit more important here than on any calf boot. The tiles have almost no give and only the channels flex, so the boot will not accommodate a foot it was not cut for and there is no breaking in to rely on.

A chukka also has only two or three eyelets, so there is less lacing to compensate with than on a taller derby boot. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball, which only makes the boot long, and a long boot slides forward on any decline. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order if you are between widths or have a high instep.

What to wear them with

One rule: the boot is the exotic, so nothing else in the outfit should be. No exotic watch strap, no second textured leather, no competing pattern.

Black croc chukkas sit in an unusual place, dressier than any calf chukka and less formal than a croc oxford. Charcoal and mid gray pants work. Navy works. Dark denim works and is probably the most natural pairing given the shape. They will not carry a formal business suit, because a chukka is a chukka whatever it is made of.

Match your belt to plain black smooth calf rather than chasing a matching exotic. Also in the range: the black crocodile loafers and the navy blue crocodile chukka boots.

Care

No wax polish, ever. Wax fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale in a lighter tone, which on black is unmissable and close to impossible to clear without damaging the tile edges.

Wipe with a soft damp cloth. Use a conditioner made for exotic leathers two or three times a year, applied thinly and buffed off. No brushing, because a stiff brush catches and lifts the tile edges.

On a boot there is one extra step: use boot trees or stuff the shaft, because an empty exotic boot folds at the ankle and a folded crocodile tile does not recover. Keep them out of direct heat and sunlight, rest them a day between wears.

What to expect when you order

Cut after you order from a selected skin, with the tile layout planned around where the boot flexes. Every hide is patterned differently, so your pair will be close to the photographs rather than a copy. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is the difference between crocodile, alligator and caiman?
Crocodile has a sensory pit on every scale including the belly tiles. Alligator has none on the belly. Caiman has a bony plate inside most scales, so the tiles feel hard and often show calcium creases, and it costs a fraction of the other two.

Is caiman sold as crocodile?
Often, and a seller doing it is not technically lying, since caiman is a crocodilian. But the hide is a different material: the bone inside each scale makes it stiff and it creases rather than flexing. Press a tile with a fingernail, crocodile and alligator give slightly and caiman is hard.

How can I tell real hide from embossed leather?
Drag a fingernail across the tiles, which catches on a real hide and glides on embossed. Look for repetition, since an embossing plate repeats and an animal never does. And look at the flesh side, where a genuine hide shows the tile structure faintly as a shadow while embossed leather is uniform on the back.

Why does an exotic boot cost more than an exotic shoe in the same hide?
Because the tile layout has to be planned around two flex points instead of one. Crocodile tiles do not bend, only the channels between them do, and on a chukka the hide has to flex at the ball and at the ankle. Get it wrong and the boot develops a hard fold across the tiles that does not recover.

Why is black difficult on crocodile?
Because the hide is read by relief, with the tiles catching light and the channels holding shadow. Black absorbs almost all light, so a poorly finished black croc loses its own pattern. The tile faces need enough sheen to return light while the channels stay matte.

Does crocodile stretch?
Barely, which makes fit more important here than on any calf boot. The tiles have almost no give and only the channels flex, so there is no breaking in to rely on.

How should a chukka fit?
Snug, and with the ball of the foot right, because two or three eyelets give less adjustment than a taller derby boot. Do not size up for width, because a boot that is too long slides forward on any decline.

Can I polish these with wax?
No. Wax fills the channels between the tiles, dries pale and outlines every scale in a lighter tone, and on black it is unmissable. Wipe with a soft damp cloth and use an exotic leather conditioner two or three times a year.

Do I need boot trees?
Yes, or at minimum stuff the shaft. An empty exotic boot folds at the ankle and a folded crocodile tile does not recover.
