Men's Dark Brown Suede Derby Boots
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Men's dark brown suede derby boots, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Open lacing on a boot is the most forgiving fit in footwear, and suede is what keeps the shape from reading formal.
Derby lacing, and why it matters more on a boot
A derby has open lacing: the facings carrying the eyelets are stitched on top of the vamp and are free to spread as wide as your foot needs. An oxford has closed lacing, with the facings stitched underneath, meeting in a fixed V.
On a shoe that difference is mostly about formality. On a boot it is about whether the thing fits at all. A boot has more eyelets and a taller shaft, so it is gripping your foot and ankle over a much greater area, and any mismatch between the shape of the boot and the shape of your instep is multiplied. Open lacing absorbs that. It lets the boot close down on a slim ankle and open up on a high instep without either extreme looking wrong.
That is why almost every work boot, hiking boot and country boot ever made is a derby. Closed lacing on a boot is a dress decision and it costs you fit.
Why suede on a derby boot
A derby boot in smooth calf is close to a dress boot. Put it in suede and it moves decisively into smart casual, which is where a boot is most useful for most people.
The reason is how the two surfaces handle light. Smooth calf reflects, which shows the shape of the boot as a hard outline and reads formal. Suede absorbs, so the boot reads as a soft mass rather than a sharp silhouette, and it sits comfortably with denim, cord and flannel in a way a polished boot does not.
There is a practical argument too. A boot spends its life closer to wet pavements and scuffed thresholds than a shoe does, and suede does not show the small abrasions that mark smooth calf around the toe and the topline. What suede does badly is standing water, which is what the protector spray below is for.
Suede, nubuck and split suede
Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, buffed to a nap. Nubuck is the grain side sanded lightly to a much finer nap, denser and harder wearing because the tight outer fibers remain. Split suede is the layer left over once the grain has been taken off for something else, napped both sides, and it is the cheap one: loose, shedding, shiny at the flex points within a season.
On a boot this matters more than on a shoe, because a boot flexes hard at the ankle as well as at the ball, so there are two places where poor suede goes shiny instead of one. Press your thumb across the surface: real suede and nubuck take a directional mark and recover when brushed, split suede either will not mark or marks and stays marked.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, and the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the upper. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot across the first month.
Calf suede upper, open derby lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's boots.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.
Derby lacing gives you real adjustment across the instep, which means the measurements that decide the fit are length and ball girth rather than instep height. Get those right and the lacing handles the rest.
Suede also gives slightly more than calf across the first few wears because the fibers are looser, so order firm rather than roomy. Do not size up to gain width, because a boot that is too long slides forward on descent and your toes meet the front, which is the most common complaint about boots that are otherwise well made.
Order your true length and specify the width separately. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us first if you are between widths or have a high instep.
What to wear them with
Dark brown suede boots are a cold weather workhorse and they want cloth with texture.
Denim in any weight is the natural pairing, worn over the boot. Cord, moleskin and heavy chinos work. Gray flannel works and is the dressiest thing these will carry comfortably. Tweed and wool odd jackets work.
What they do not want is a smooth worsted suit, where suede reads two steps too casual, or anything in a light summer cloth. Match your belt to the depth of the suede rather than the texture. Also in the range: the dark brown suede monk strap boots and the tan suede Norwegian stitched chukka boots.
Care
No polish, ever. Wax and cream fill the nap, flatten it and leave a shiny patch that does not recover.
Brush with a crepe or rubber suede brush in one direction after each wear, and pay particular attention to the ankle flex, which is where a boot goes shiny first. A suede eraser handles marks that brushing will not. Apply a protector spray before the first wear and reapply every couple of months, which on a boot that sees winter pavements is the single most useful thing you can do.
If they get soaked, stuff them with paper, dry naturally away from heat, and brush the nap back up only once they are completely dry. Brushing wet suede mats it permanently. Use boot trees or stuff the shaft so it does not fold at the ankle.
What to expect when you order
Cut and lasted after you order. Suede varies in depth of tone hide to hide, so yours will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
What is a derby boot?
A boot with open lacing, where the facings carrying the eyelets are stitched on top of the vamp and are free to spread as wide as your foot needs. An oxford has closed lacing with the facings stitched underneath, meeting in a fixed V.
Why is open lacing better on a boot?
Because a boot has more eyelets and a taller shaft, so it grips your foot over a much greater area and any mismatch with your instep is multiplied. Open lacing absorbs that, closing down on a slim ankle and opening for a high instep. Almost every work, hiking and country boot ever made is a derby for this reason.
Why choose suede over smooth calf on a boot?
Because smooth calf reflects light and reads as a hard formal outline, while suede absorbs it and reads as a soft mass that sits with denim, cord and flannel. Suede also hides the small abrasions a boot picks up around the toe and topline.
What is the difference between suede, nubuck and split suede?
Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, napped. Nubuck is the grain side sanded to a finer nap and is denser and harder wearing. Split suede is the leftover layer after the grain has been removed and goes loose and shiny at the flex points within a season.
Why does suede quality matter more on a boot than a shoe?
Because a boot flexes hard at the ankle as well as at the ball, so there are two places where poor suede goes shiny instead of one.
What size should I order?
Your true length, with the width specified separately, D through EEE. Do not size up to gain width: a boot that is too long slides forward on descent and your toes meet the front, which is the most common complaint about otherwise well made boots.
Does suede stretch?
Slightly more than calf across the first few wears, because the fibers are looser. Order firm rather than roomy.
How do I stop suede boots going shiny at the ankle?
Brush after every wear with a crepe or rubber suede brush in one direction, paying particular attention to the ankle flex, which is where a boot goes shiny first. Never use polish, which fills the nap permanently.
What happens if they get soaked?
Stuff them with paper and dry naturally away from heat, then brush the nap back up only once they are completely dry. Brushing wet suede mats it permanently.
