Purple Patina Monk Strap Shoes for Men
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Purple is a colour most shoemakers avoid, and the reason is chemical rather than aesthetic. Violet dyes are the least stable in the leather dyer's range. That is worth understanding before you buy this shoe, because it changes how you should own it.
What patina actually is, and what it is not
Patina on a shoe is colour applied by hand in thin layers after the shoe is made, using dyes and creams worked into the surface so the shade varies across it — deeper at the toe and heel, lighter over the vamp, with the transitions blended by hand.
Three things get called patina that are not:
Burnishing is darkening the toe and heel by heat and friction, working wax into the leather until it deepens. It produces a similar visual result and it is a legitimate technique, but it is done with pressure rather than colour and it cannot produce a shade the leather did not already contain. You cannot burnish a brown shoe purple.
Antiquing is a single darker glaze applied over a base colour to age it. One pass, one tone, usually sprayed. It is the mass-market version.
Through-dyeing happens at the tannery, before the shoe exists, with the dye penetrating the full thickness of the hide. It is the most durable option and it produces a flat, uniform colour with no shading at all.
The distinction matters because a patina is a surface, and everything below follows from that.
Patina, burnishing, antiquing and through-dyeing compared
| Finish | Applied | Depth | Shading | Repairable |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Hand patina | After making, by hand, in layers | Surface | Continuous, varies per pair | Yes, by a specialist |
| Burnishing | After making, heat and wax | Surface | Toe and heel only | Yes, easily |
| Antiquing | Sprayed glaze | Surface | Single tone, uniform | Partly |
| Through-dyed | At the tannery, in the drum | Full thickness | None | Not needed |

Why purple is the hardest colour to do well
Two problems, and they compound.
The first is that purple has no natural reference. Brown leather reads as leather because hide is brown. Black reads as formal because we have agreed it does. Purple reads as dyed, always, and the only question is whether it reads as dyed well or dyed badly. Applied flat it looks synthetic immediately — a uniform purple upper is the single fastest way to make a good shoe look like a costume.
Shading is what rescues it. Taking the toe down toward near-black and letting the vamp stay lighter gives the eye depth to read, and the shoe stops reading as a purple object and starts reading as leather with purple in it. On brown, patina is decoration. On purple, it is the only thing standing between the shoe and looking cheap.
The second problem is that violet dyes are physically less stable than any other part of the spectrum, and that one is not solvable by technique.
The failure you will cause: fading it in a window
Here is the specific way these shoes get ruined, and it is not wear.
Violet dye molecules break down under ultraviolet light faster than reds, browns or blacks. It is the same reason purple fabric fades first on a shop display and why violet is the first pigment to go in an old print. Leave these shoes on a rack by a window, on a sunny hallway floor, or in the back of a car, and the exposed surface will shift — usually toward a flat greyish brown, and usually on one shoe more than the other, because one was closer to the light.
That damage is uneven and it is permanent. It cannot be brushed out or creamed back, because the colour is gone rather than covered. Re-shading is a specialist job and most cobblers will decline it.
What prevents it: store them in a closed cupboard or in the bags they arrive in, not on open display. Do not leave them in a car. If you own a shoe rack in a bright room, these are not the shoes for it — and that is a real constraint, not a caveat.
How to check whether the purple is skin deep
A surface patina and a through-dyed purple look similar in a product photograph and behave completely differently over years. You can tell them apart, and you can do it on our photographs.
- Look inside an eyelet. A punched hole cuts through the full thickness of the upper and exposes the core of the leather. On a surface patina you will see the leather's own base colour — usually pale tan or natural — ringed by the purple sitting on top. On a through-dyed hide the colour goes all the way through and the hole looks purple to its depth.
- Check the edge of the strap. Cut leather edges are usually finished with edge paint or ink, but on a hand-patinated shoe there is often slight colour carry from the finishing onto the edge. A perfectly clean, sharply demarcated edge with no bleed usually means the leather arrived already coloured.
- Compare the two shoes. Hand shading is never identical between a pair. If both shoes in a photograph carry the same tone in the same place at the same intensity, that is a spray booth, not a hand.
Neither answer is wrong — a through-dyed purple is more durable and a hand patina is more interesting. But you should know which one you are paying for. If our own photographs do not let you check, ask us for the frames.
How formal are purple shoes?
The closure is business-appropriate and the colour is not, and it is worth being blunt about that.
A monk strap in black or dark brown sits roughly where a derby sits — correct for most offices, most weddings, most dinners. Purple takes it out of that range entirely. These are correct for events where you have decided to be noticed: a wedding you are attending rather than in, a party, a creative office, an evening out. They are wrong for interviews, black tie, funerals, and any dress code that mentions shoe colour.
Buy them knowing that. A purple shoe is a deliberate object, and if you want one that disappears, we make the same closure in black — see our black monk strap boots.
What to wear with purple shoes
Charcoal and mid-grey are the safest and the best. Grey is neutral enough to let the shoe be the event without competing, and the cool base sits comfortably beside violet.
Navy works and is the second choice. Black trousers work but flatten the shoe — the depth of the shading is lost against a darker anchor. Brown suiting fights it outright; warm brown against cool purple is the pairing that goes wrong most often.
Belt: black or a deep aubergine if you have one. Do not attempt to match the purple exactly. A near-match is more conspicuous than a clean contrast, and this is the mistake people make when they try hardest.
Keep everything else quiet. One deliberate object per outfit.
Sizing and fit
A monk strap adjusts over the instep across the punched holes, which is a wider fitting range than an oxford and a narrower one than laces. It works well for a high instep, up to the point where you run out of holes.
{{VERIFY: BUCKLE COUNT — single or double? And is this a shoe or a boot? Both affect this section, the H1 and the title. Blocker.}}
{{VERIFY: Which last, does it run true to size, are width fittings available?}} Measuring instructions are in our size guide. If lace-ups have historically fitted you badly across the instep, tell us before ordering.
Caring for a patina finish
- Neutral products only. There is no purple shoe cream worth using, and a brown one will fill the light areas and collapse the shading into mud in a single application. Neutral cream, neutral wax, nothing else.
- Store them dark. The single most important habit for this colour specifically.
- Brush more than you cream. Horsehair after every wear restores most of the lustre without adding anything.
- Blot water immediately. Dry at room temperature, away from radiators, then brush when fully dry.
- Cedar trees from the first day. A surface finish cracks at vamp creases sooner than a through-dyed leather does.
Fuller detail is in our leather care guide.
What these cost, and what the discounted ones are
Purple patina shoes turn up regularly at heavy discounts — a quarter off, half off. There is a reason they get discounted, and it is not that they are bad shoes.
Purple is a slow seller. Retailers order it, it sits, and it gets marked down to clear. What you are usually buying at that price is a sprayed antique finish on a corrected-grain upper — a real shoe, photographed well, that will look good for a season or two and then flatten out.
{{VERIFY: state this shoe's price and what specifically accounts for it — hand finishing time, leather grade, construction. Do not publish a price argument without the number. A competing product in this category is currently showing 27% off, which is the comparison your buyer will see.}}
When these are the wrong shoes
- You want shoes for work. Buy black or dark brown. These will not do that job and buying them for it wastes your money.
- You store shoes in a bright room. Stated plainly because it is the most likely way these get ruined. If you have nowhere dark, buy a colour that can take the light.
- You want one interesting pair of shoes. Buy a mid-brown patina instead. It carries most of the visual interest and goes with four times as much.
- You want a shoe that stays exactly as it arrived. A hand patina moves. Flex points lighten, waxed areas deepen, and on purple that change is more visible than on any other base.
What to expect when you order
{{VERIFY: LEAD TIME — state the number of days plainly here. Confirm the returns window. Competing listings in this category display free 30-day returns in search results, which buyers can see before they click.}}
Hand-finished colour varies between pairs, and on purple that variation shows more than it would on brown. That is the process rather than a defect, and it is worth saying before the box is opened. Shipping and returns detail is on our shipping and returns page.
Frequently asked questions
What does patina mean on shoes?
Hand-applied colour built up in layers after the shoe is made, shaded so the tone varies across the surface. It is a finishing process, not a material, and it is unrelated to the metal oxidation the word describes elsewhere.
What is the difference between patina and burnishing?
Burnishing darkens leather with heat, friction and wax, so it can only deepen a colour the leather already has. Patina applies new colour by hand and can change the shade entirely.
Do purple shoes fade?
Violet dyes are the least UV-stable in the range, so yes, faster than brown or black. Storing them out of direct light is the single most effective thing you can do.
Can you polish patina shoes?
With neutral cream and wax, yes. Never with pigmented polish — it fills the light areas and flattens the shading permanently.
What colour trousers go with purple shoes?
Charcoal and mid-grey first, navy second. Avoid brown suiting, which fights the cool tone.
Are monk strap shoes formal?
In black or dark brown, roughly as formal as a derby. In purple, no — the colour puts them in occasion-wear rather than business dress.
Is a monk strap the same as a loafer?
No. A loafer has no fastening at all. A monk strap closes with a buckled strap across the instep.
