Men's Tan Suede Norwegian Stitched Chukka Boots
4.8 / 5 (124 reviews)Product Details
Men's tan suede chukka boots with a hand sewn Norwegian apron seam, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Norwegian stitching on a chukka is an unusual combination, because it puts the most labor intensive seam in shoemaking on the most relaxed boot shape there is.
What Norwegian stitching is
A Norwegian stitch, sometimes called an apron stitch, is a hand sewn seam that joins a separate apron panel to the vamp of the shoe. The apron is the U shaped piece sitting over the top of the foot. Rather than being stitched flat, the two pieces are joined edge to edge so that the seam stands proud of the surface as a visible raised ridge.
It is worth separating two things that share the name. Norwegian stitching is this decorative apron seam on the upper. Norwegian welting is a construction method, related to Goodyear welting, where the upper is turned outward and stitched through the welt for extra water resistance. These boots have the Norwegian apron seam on the upper and Goodyear welted construction underneath. The two are frequently conflated in product descriptions, including by people who should know better.
The seam is done by hand because a machine cannot produce the raised edge to edge join. It is the reason this boot takes longer to make than a plain chukka, and the quality of that one seam is what you are paying for.
What a chukka is, and is not
A chukka is an ankle height boot with two or three eyelets and open derby lacing. That is the whole definition, and it is more restrictive than the way the word gets used.
| Boot | Closure | Sole |
|---|---|---|
| Chukka | Two or three eyelets, open lacing | Usually leather, dressier |
| Desert boot | Two eyelets, open lacing | Crepe rubber, unlined, much more casual |
| Jodhpur | Wraparound strap and buckle | Leather, dressiest of the three |
The desert boot is the one people mean when they call something a chukka. It is a specific thing: crepe soled, unlined, softer, and considerably less formal than a leather soled chukka. A leather soled welted chukka will carry flannel pants. A crepe soled desert boot will not.
Why the combination is unusual
Norwegian stitching normally turns up on heavy country shoes and derbies, where the raised seam matches the weight of the rest of the shoe. A chukka is the opposite: minimal, only two or three eyelets, nothing on it that is not structural.
Putting the seam on a chukka gives the boot a single line of visible handwork on an otherwise plain shape. The apron seam runs over the top of the foot and it is the only thing to look at, which means it has to be clean. Uneven stitch spacing, a seam that wanders off center, or a ridge that flattens where the boot flexes all show immediately, and there is no broguing or hardware to distract from any of it.
In tan suede the effect is stronger still, because suede holds shadow along the raised ridge. On smooth calf the seam is a line. On suede it is a line with depth.
Suede, nubuck and split suede
Suede is the flesh side of a full thickness hide, napped. Nubuck is the grain side sanded to a finer, denser nap. Split suede is the leftover layer after the grain has been removed, and it is loose, sheds, and goes shiny at the flex points inside a season.
On a hand stitched apron the difference is decisive. A dense calf suede holds the raised ridge of the seam. A loose split suede lets the ridge collapse under its own tension within months, and once it has flattened the seam is just a line of stitching on a plain boot.
How these are built
Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, and the boot resoles repeatedly. Cork between insole and outsole compresses to your foot over the first month.
Calf suede upper with a hand sewn Norwegian apron seam, open derby lacing, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's boots.
Fit and sizing
Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.
A chukka has only two or three eyelets, which gives it less adjustment than a taller derby boot even though the lacing is open. The fit across the ball of the foot therefore matters more, because there is less lacing to compensate with.
Suede gives slightly more than calf over the first few wears, so order firm rather than roomy. Do not size up for width: a chukka that is too long slides forward and your toes meet the front on any decline. Order your true length and specify the width separately. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us first if you are between widths or have a high instep.
What to wear them with
Tan suede chukkas are the most versatile boot most men can own, and the leather sole lifts them above where a desert boot can go.
Navy is the strongest pairing, in chinos, flannel or denim. Gray flannel works and is the dressiest thing these will carry. Olive and stone chinos work. Dark denim works.
What they do not want is a formal business suit, or black tailoring, which fights the warmth in the tan. Match your belt to the tan rather than trying to match the texture. Also in the range: the gray patina chukka boots and the dark brown suede derby boots.
Care, and the seam specific part
No polish, ever. Wax and cream fill the nap and leave a shiny patch that does not come back.
Brush with a crepe or rubber suede brush in one direction after each wear. The apron seam needs its own attention: brush along the ridge rather than across it, because brushing across a raised seam flattens the nap on top of it and the ridge stops catching light, which is the entire visual point of the boot. A small brush worked along each side of the seam keeps it standing.
Protector spray before first wear and every couple of months after, which matters on a light tan. Suede eraser for marks. If soaked, stuff with paper, dry naturally away from heat, brush the nap up only when completely dry.
What to expect when you order
The apron seam is sewn by hand after you order, so the stitch spacing is its own on every pair. Suede also varies in depth hide to hide, so yours will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.
Questions we get asked
What is Norwegian stitching?
A hand sewn seam joining a separate apron panel to the vamp, sewn edge to edge so the seam stands proud of the surface as a raised ridge rather than lying flat. The apron is the U shaped piece over the top of the foot.
Is Norwegian stitching the same as Norwegian welting?
No, and the two get conflated constantly. Norwegian stitching is the decorative apron seam on the upper. Norwegian welting is a construction method where the upper is turned outward and stitched through the welt for water resistance. These have the apron seam and Goodyear welted construction.
Why is the seam done by hand?
Because a machine cannot produce the raised edge to edge join. That is why the boot takes longer to make than a plain chukka, and the quality of that one seam is most of what you are paying for.
What is a chukka boot?
An ankle height boot with two or three eyelets and open derby lacing. That is the whole definition, and it is narrower than the way the word usually gets used.
What is the difference between a chukka and a desert boot?
The sole and the construction. A desert boot is crepe soled and unlined, softer and considerably more casual. A leather soled welted chukka will carry flannel pants where a crepe soled desert boot will not.
Why does suede quality matter on a Norwegian stitched boot?
Because a dense calf suede holds the raised ridge of the seam and a loose split suede lets it collapse under its own tension within months. Once the ridge has flattened the seam is just a line of stitching on a plain boot.
How should a chukka fit?
Snugger than a taller boot. Two or three eyelets give less adjustment even though the lacing is open, so the fit across the ball matters more. Do not size up for width, because a chukka that is too long slides forward and your toes meet the front on any decline.
How do I brush around the apron seam?
Along the ridge, never across it. Brushing across a raised seam flattens the nap on top of it and the ridge stops catching light, which is the whole visual point of the boot. Work a small brush along each side of the seam.
Will the stitching look exactly like the photographs?
Close, not identical. The apron seam is sewn by hand after you order, so the stitch spacing is its own on every pair.
