Product Details

Penny loafers in full grain calf with the blue built by hand in layers, hand welted, made to order in your US size and width. Two things make this shoe unusual: a loafer is the best canvas for a patina there is, and blue is the hardest colour to put on one.

What a penny loafer is

A penny loafer is a slip-on with a strap — the saddle — running across the vamp, and a small cut-out slot in the middle of that strap. The slot is where the penny went, and the name comes from American students in the 1930s and 40s doing exactly that.

Three details separate a well made one from the rest.

The saddle should be a separate piece of leather stitched down at both ends, not a strip glued on or a shape stamped into the vamp. The beef rolls — the raised, stitched swellings where the saddle meets the sides of the shoe — should be genuine rolls of leather rather than a decorative seam. And the slot edges should be finished and turned, not raw cut, because a raw edge is where the leather begins to stretch.

See the rest of the slip-ons in loafers, or the backless version in mules.

Why a loafer is the best shoe for a patina

This is the argument for buying colour work on this shape specifically, and it is simple geometry.

On a lace-up, the facings interrupt the top of the shoe. The vamp runs from the toe to the throat and then stops, and there are eyelets, laces and a tongue sitting in the middle of the largest visible surface. A patina applied there has to work around all of it, and the gradation is broken up by hardware.

A loafer has none of that. The vamp is one unbroken sweep from the toe back to the throat line, and it is the biggest continuous panel on any dress shoe. That means a gradation can run the full length of it uninterrupted — deep at the toe, lifting across the middle, easing again at the throat — and the eye reads it as one movement rather than several patches.

The saddle then does something a lace-up cannot offer. Because it is a separate piece of leather laid across that panel, it takes pigment slightly differently, so it reads as a distinct band of tone against the vamp behind it. On a well-executed patina the saddle is where the colour is deepest and the contrast is deliberate.

More of the same technique in other colours in the hand painted patina collection.

Why blue is the hardest patina colour

Grey is difficult because it has no hue to hide behind. Blue is difficult for the opposite reason: it reacts with what is underneath it.

A patina is built on crust leather — hide that has been tanned but not dyed. Crust is not white. It is a warm natural tan, somewhere between beige and light honey, and that warmth is yellow. Put blue over yellow and you get green. Not obviously, not immediately, but as a cast that sits under the finished colour and pulls the whole shoe toward teal.

There are only two ways round it, and both cost time. Either the base is toned down first so the blue has something neutral to sit on, or the blue is built in more layers than a warm colour would need, each thin enough that the cast is buried rather than mixed. Skip both and you get a shoe that photographs blue and looks green in daylight — which is the most common failure in blue patina work and the reason so few makers offer it.

It also affects how the shoe ages. Burgundy and pink drift warm under sunlight, toward rust and beige. Blue drifts the other way, toward green, because the pigment fades faster than the warm base beneath it and lets that base back through. Same rule as every patina — keep them out of direct light — but the direction of the damage is different, and green is more conspicuous than faded blue.

Hand painted or sprayed: the one check

Look for a boundary. Hand-layered pigment has no edge you can point to; the transition is continuous. Sprayed shading stops, usually as a soft oval on the toe. And on a worn pair, hand work deepens at the flex crease while a sprayed film cracks and lightens there, because the colour sits on a surface coating rather than in the grain.

On this shoe there is a second place to look. Follow the colour to the saddle. Hand work treats the saddle as its own piece and grades it deliberately. A spray passes over the whole vamp and the saddle simply matches whatever is around it.

What goes wrong with a penny loafer

Four things, three of them specific to this shape.

The saddle ends lift. The strap is stitched down at both ends, and those two points take every bit of tension the strap ever sees. On a shoe where the saddle is glued or lightly tacked rather than stitched through, one end works loose within a couple of years and the strap begins to stand away from the vamp.

The slot stretches. The cut-out has no reinforcement behind it on most loafers, so if the edges were left raw the slot elongates from a neat rectangle into a slack opening. It is cosmetic rather than structural, but it is the detail people look at.

Heel slip. There are no laces, so the only things holding your foot in are the throat line and the heel counter. A loafer that is even slightly too long will slip at the heel every step, and no amount of breaking in fixes it — that is a fit error, not a settling issue.

Pigment collects at the saddle seam. Cream builds up in the channel where the strap meets the vamp, dries pale, and outlines the saddle in a lighter tone. Brush along that seam, not across it, and keep the cream off the ridge.

And the rule that applies to every patina: neutral cream only. Pigmented polish over hand-layered colour flattens every gradation permanently, and on blue there is no recovering it.

Fit: made to order, and why it matters more without laces

Made to order in US sizes, widths D through EEE.

A lace-up gives you a second chance. If the width is slightly off you can adjust the lacing, and the leather eventually gives. A loafer gives you nothing — it either fits or it does not. Too narrow and it grips across the ball with no way to ease it. Too long and it slips at the heel forever.

So the two measurements that matter are length and ball girth, and on this shoe they matter equally. Do not size up for width; order your length and specify the width. Measure against the size guide, and if you are between widths, get heel slip in loafers generally, or have a low instep, tell us before you order. On a made-to-order shoe that conversation is free beforehand and impossible afterwards.

Construction, briefly

Hand welted: the welt is sewn to a holdfast cut into a solid leather insole, with nothing cemented, so resoling happens below the welt without the upper being touched. On a shoe where hand-applied colour is most of the cost, that is the point — the patina survives every resole.

Worth noting that most loafers at every price are Blake stitched or cemented, because a loafer is treated as a lighter shoe. Blake runs the sole stitch through the insole and the upper. Cemented cannot be resoled at all.

What to wear it with

Blue is more wearable than people expect, because it behaves like navy rather than like a colour.

Grey flannel is the strongest pairing — charcoal or mid-grey, cool cloth beside a cool shoe. Stone and cream chinos work well and are the better summer option. Dark denim works. Navy trousers work but need enough separation in depth, or the shoe disappears.

What blue does not want is brown or tan above it, and it does not want black either. Match the belt to the deepest tone in the patina, which on blue usually means navy or a
