Men's burgundy Chelsea boots in full grain calf, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. The elastic gusset is the only part of a Chelsea boot with a finite life, so most of this page is about the gusset, because that is what decides whether you own the boot for two years or twenty.

The gusset is the whole question

Everything else on a welted boot can be maintained or replaced indefinitely. The leather is fed, the sole is stitched on and comes off again, the heel is rebuilt. Elastic is the exception. It degrades whatever you do.

So the question is never whether the gusset will relax. It is whether it can be replaced when it does.

How the gusset is fitted What happens when it goes
Stitched in as a separate component A cobbler unpicks it and sews in a new one. The boot carries on.
Bonded, or trapped under a glued facing Replacement means rebuilding the quarter. Most cobblers decline the job.

Ours is stitched in as its own piece. How to check on any Chelsea: look at the inside of the boot where the elastic meets the leather. A stitched gusset shows a line of stitching through both materials on the inside face. A bonded one shows a clean join with nothing holding it but adhesive.

What actually kills elastic, and it is not walking

People assume a gusset dies from being stretched. It mostly dies from storage.

  • UV light breaks down the rubber threads inside the weave. A boot left in a sunny hallway ages faster than one worn every day and kept in a cupboard.
  • Heat does the same thing faster. A radiator, a car footwell in summer, or drying wet boots near a heater will cost you years.
  • Polish and cream do the elastic no good at all. Solvents in wax attack rubber, and cream collects in the channel where the gusset meets the leather, dries pale and outlines the panel.
  • Pulling on the gusset to get the boot on. That is what the pull tab is for: it exists so you pull against the boot rather than against the elastic.

Put another way, the gusset on a boot worn twice a week and stored properly will outlast the gusset on a boot worn twice a year and left on a windowsill.

Why burgundy, and where the line sits

Burgundy is a deep red brown with a purple undertone, and on a boot it does something neither black nor brown manages.

  • Black is formal everywhere and interesting nowhere. A black Chelsea is a correct boot with nothing to say.
  • Brown is warm and versatile, but it competes with brown tailoring and disappears against tan.
  • Burgundy is dark enough to read as a dark boot from across a room and different enough not to vanish. The red undertone deepens at the toe and heel with polishing while the flex points stay lighter, so an old burgundy boot has visible depth that black never develops.

The test: if you can name the color from across a room, it is too bright for a dress boot. Deep burgundy passes. A cherry or wine red does not.

One term worth knowing because it is used to charge more: burgundy is a color, shell cordovan is a material. Shell cordovan is cut from the fibrous membrane under a horse's hindquarter and tanned over roughly six months, and it is often dyed burgundy, which is where the confusion started. A listing saying "cordovan color" is describing a shade. These are full grain calf in burgundy, and we would rather say so.

Where a Chelsea sits, and what it will not do

A Chelsea has no lacing and no visible hardware, which gives it the cleanest silhouette of any boot. That makes it the dressiest boot shape there is, and also the most limited.

  • Works: charcoal and mid gray flannel, navy, dark denim, gray chinos.
  • Avoid: brown and tan tailoring, which fights the red; black tailoring, which flattens it; and any dress code expecting a plain black oxford.
  • Will not do: heavy weather, rough ground, or anything where you need the ankle support a laced boot gives. A Chelsea holds your foot with elastic, which is comfort rather than support.

Full grain, top grain, genuine leather

  • Full grain keeps the complete outer surface of the hide with nothing sanded off, so the tightest fibers are still there. It patinas rather than wearing through and it takes a shine.
  • Top grain has been sanded to remove scars then coated or embossed. It cracks at the flex line within a couple of years.
  • Genuine leather is the lowest grade sold despite the name.

On a Chelsea this matters at one specific place: the leather immediately beside the gusset flexes every single time you put the boot on and take it off, far more than the vamp does. A coated finish cracks there first, and a crack beside the elastic is not repairable.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole and the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, so the boot resoles repeatedly without disturbing the upper. Cork fills the cavity between insole and outsole and compresses to your foot over the first month, so the footbed ends up shaped to you.

Full grain calf upper, elastic gusset stitched in as a separate replaceable component, pull tab at the topline, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel with a rubber top piece. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service. See the rest of the range in men's boots.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes 5 to 16.5 with widths D through EEE.

A Chelsea is the least forgiving boot there is on fit, because there is no lacing and no buckle to take up a difference. It either fits or it does not, and nothing you do afterwards changes that.

Order to fit on day one, snug across the instep. Do not size up because the boot feels firm going on the first time. A new gusset is at its stiffest and relaxes within a few weeks of wear. A boot sized up to make that first pull easier will slip at the heel forever afterwards, and heel slip in a Chelsea cannot be fixed.

The two measurements that decide it are length and ball girth. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up to gain room across the ball. If you have a high instep or a wide forefoot, say so, because on a Chelsea that is the difference between a boot you wear and one you do not. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us before you order.

Care

Cream first, then wax on the toe and heel counter, the two areas that do not flex. Use a burgundy or neutral cream rather than brown, because brown cream on burgundy pulls it toward a muddy chestnut over a year and the shift does not reverse.

  • Keep cream and wax off the elastic itself. Solvents attack rubber, and product collects in the channel where the gusset meets the leather, dries pale and outlines the panel in a lighter tone.
  • Brush along that seam, never across it.
  • Store away from sun and heat. UV and heat kill elastic faster than wear does.
  • Use the pull tab, not the gusset, to get the boot on.
  • Boot trees or stuffed shafts between wearings, and dry naturally away from heat if they get wet.

What to expect when you order

Cut and lasted after you order in your size and width. Full grain calf varies in depth hide to hide, so your pair will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

Can the elastic gusset be replaced?
On these, yes. The gusset is stitched in as its own component, so a cobbler can unpick it and sew in a new one. Where a gusset is bonded or trapped under a glued facing, replacement means rebuilding the quarter and most cobblers decline the job.

How do I check whether a gusset is stitched or bonded?
Look at the inside of the boot where the elastic meets the leather. A stitched gusset shows a line of stitching through both materials on the inside face. A bonded one shows a clean join with nothing holding it but adhesive.

What actually wears out the elastic?
Storage more than walking. UV light breaks down the rubber threads in the weave and heat does it faster, so a radiator, a car footwell in summer or drying boots near a heater cost you years. A boot worn twice a week and stored properly outlasts one worn twice a year on a windowsill.

What is the pull tab for?
So you pull against the boot rather than against the elastic. Pulling on the gusset itself is one of the fastest ways to kill it.

Why burgundy rather than black or brown?
Black is formal everywhere and interesting nowhere. Brown competes with brown tailoring and disappears against tan. Burgundy is dark enough to read as a dark boot from across a room and different enough not to vanish, and the red undertone deepens with polishing while the flex points stay lighter.

Is burgundy the same as cordovan?
No. Burgundy is a color and shell cordovan is a material, cut from the fibrous membrane under a horse's hindquarter and tanned over roughly six months. It is often dyed burgundy, which is where the confusion started. "Cordovan color" describes a shade, not the material.

How dark should burgundy be?
Deep. The test: if you can name the color from across a room it is too bright for a dress boot. A cherry or wine red reads as costume and nothing rescues it.

How should a Chelsea boot fit?
Snug across the instep on day one. There is no lacing and no buckle, so it either fits or it does not. Do not size up because the boot feels firm the first time you pull it on, since a new gusset is at its stiffest and relaxes within weeks.

Why do my Chelsea boots slip at the heel?
Almost always because they were sized up to make the first pull easier. Heel slip in a Chelsea cannot be fixed afterwards, because there is nothing to tighten.

Can I polish the elastic?
No. Solvents in wax attack rubber, and cream collects in the channel where the gusset meets the leather, dries pale and outlines the panel. Keep product off the elastic and brush along that seam rather than across it.

Where does poor leather fail first on a Chelsea?
Beside the gusset. That leather flexes every time you put the boot on and take it off, far more than the vamp does, so a coated or corrected finish cracks there first, and a crack beside the elastic is not repairable.
