Men's Belgian style loafers in dark brown full grain calf with the signature vamp bow, Goodyear welted on a leather sole and made to order in your size and width. Same shape as the classic, built to be resoled rather than replaced.

The shoe, and where it came from

Henri Bendel, nephew of the New York department store founder, opened Belgian Shoes on East 56th Street in Manhattan in 1955 and had them made in the Belgian countryside. The Belgian government recognized him for it twice, in 1964 and 1970. The shoe he sold was unlike anything else on a dress shoe rack: a very low vamp, no lacing, no broguing, no visible construction at all, and a small bow set at the top of the vamp.

The reason nothing shows is that a true Belgian is sewn inside out and then turned right side out by hand when it is finished. Every seam ends up on the inside. It is unlined and built over a light filling, which is why it feels closer to a slipper than to a shoe.

Why smooth calf changes the shoe

This is the same shape as our suede version and it is not the same shoe to wear.

Suede reads soft. The nap absorbs light, the shoe looks relaxed, and it belongs with chinos and linen. Smooth calf reflects light, takes a polish, and lifts the Belgian into territory a suede one cannot reach. In dark brown with a proper shine on the toe, this is a shoe you can wear with a suit, which is not true of most loafers at this vamp height.

It is also the harder version to make well, because a low vamp slip on in smooth leather has nowhere to hide. Every ripple in the lasting shows. Broguing and lacing on an oxford break the surface up and disguise small faults. Here there is one clean panel from the toe to the throat and the eye goes straight to any wave in it.

Full grain, top grain, genuine leather

These three terms describe quality in descending order and only one of them means what people think.

Full grain is the complete outer surface of the hide with nothing sanded off. The grain pattern is the animal's own and the fiber structure at the surface is the tightest and strongest in the hide, which is why full grain develops a patina instead of wearing through.

Top grain has had the outer surface sanded to remove scars and blemishes, then an artificial grain embossed back on. It looks uniform and it wears faster, because the strongest fibers have been removed.

Genuine leather sounds like a guarantee and is the lowest grade sold. It is what is left of the hide after the good layers have been taken off, bonded and coated.

On a shoe with a single unbroken panel across the vamp, full grain is not a luxury detail. It is what stops the vamp cracking at the flex line within two years.

Turned or welted, what you are choosing between

Turned construction is what gives the classic Belgian its softness, and it is also why the classic cannot be resoled: there is no welt for a cobbler to stitch to. When the sole goes, the shoe goes.

These keep the Belgian shape, the low vamp and the hand stitched bow, and put a Goodyear welt underneath. The shoe is firmer than a turned one for the first few wears and then settles as the cork bed compresses to your foot. What you get in exchange is a loafer that survives rain, takes a sole every few years and is still in the rotation in a decade.

How these are built

Goodyear welted and hand stitched. A leather welt runs around the upper and insole, the outsole is stitched to that welt rather than glued to the upper, and the cork filling between them compresses to your foot over the first month.

Full grain calf upper, leather lining, leather sole, stacked leather heel. The vamp bow is a separate piece stitched down rather than glued, which matters because a glued bow lifts at one corner and never sits flat again. Width cut to your measurement in D, E, EE or EEE through our made to order service.

Fit and sizing

Made to order in US sizes with widths D through EEE.

A Belgian has the lowest vamp of any loafer, so it holds your foot at fewer points than a penny or a tassel. It has to be snug. If it is comfortable the moment you put it on it is too big, and heel slip on a slip on cannot be corrected afterwards.

Smooth calf gives less than suede across the first few wears, so the fit you order is close to the fit you keep. Order your true length and specify the width separately rather than sizing up for room across the ball. Measure against the men's shoe size guide and tell us first if you are between widths or have a low instep.

What to wear them with

Dark brown calf is the most versatile loafer there is, and this is the version that reaches furthest up the formality scale.

Gray flannel and mid gray worsted are the strongest pairings. Navy works and is the safe one. Charcoal works if the brown is deep enough to hold its own against it. Stone and tan chinos work in a casual register, and dark denim works.

What it does not want is black tailoring, which fights brown at every depth. Match your belt to the shoe rather than to the pants. Also in the range: the brown suede Belgian loafer and the suede and crocodile Belgian loafer. Browse all men's leather loafers.

Care

Cream first, then wax. Cream feeds the leather and keeps the color; wax builds the shine and protects the toe. Cream every four to six wears, wax as often as you want a shine.

Keep wax off the bow and the seam around it, because it builds up in the channel, dries pale and outlines the bow in a lighter tone. Brush along that seam, not across it. Cedar trees between wearings, a day of rest between wears, and dry naturally away from heat if they get wet.

What to expect when you order

Cut and lasted after you order. Full grain calf varies in depth hide to hide, so yours will be close to the photographs rather than identical. Production is 10 to 14 days, then shipping.

Questions we get asked

What is a Belgian loafer?
A very low vamp slip on with a small bow at the top of the vamp and no visible construction anywhere. Henri Bendel opened Belgian Shoes in Manhattan in 1955 and had them made by artisans in Belgium, which is where the name comes from.

Why does a traditional Belgian have no visible seams?
Because it is sewn inside out and then turned right side out by hand when it is finished, so every seam ends up on the inside. It is also unlined and built over a light filling, which is why it feels closer to a slipper than a shoe.

Can a Belgian loafer be resoled?
A turned one, no. There is no welt for a cobbler to stitch to, so when the sole wears through the shoe is finished. These keep the Belgian shape and bow but are Goodyear welted, so they take a new sole every few years.

How is smooth calf different from suede on this shape?
Suede reads soft and belongs with chinos and linen. Smooth calf reflects light, takes a polish and lifts the shoe into suit territory, which most loafers at this vamp height cannot reach. It is also harder to make well, because a single clean panel shows every ripple in the lasting.

What is the difference between full grain and top grain leather?
Full grain is the complete outer surface with nothing sanded off, so the strongest fibers in the hide are still there and it develops a patina instead of wearing through. Top grain has been sanded to remove blemishes and embossed with an artificial grain, so it looks uniform and wears faster.

Is genuine leather good leather?
No. It sounds like a guarantee but it is the lowest grade sold, made from what is left of the hide after the good layers have been taken off, then bonded and coated.

How should these fit?
Snug. A Belgian has the lowest vamp of any loafer and holds your foot at fewer points than a penny or a tassel. If it is comfortable the moment you put it on it is too big, and heel slip on a slip on cannot be corrected later.

Should I size up for a wide foot?
No. Order your true length and specify the width separately, D through EEE. Smooth calf also gives less than suede across the first few wears, so the fit you order is close to the fit you keep.

How do I polish these without damaging the bow?
Cream first to feed the leather, then wax for shine. Keep wax off the bow and the seam around it, because it collects in the channel, dries pale and outlines the bow in a lighter tone. Brush along that seam rather than across it.
